Genesis 1 opens the Bible with a grand declaration of truth: God is Creator. He speaks and it is so—light, sky, land, seas, stars, creatures, and humankind. In six days, whether literal or literary, God reveals His nature through His creation: powerful, orderly, wise, and good. These opening verses are not only foundational to our understanding of the world but also to our identity as those made in His image.

Genesis 1

The Creation

      1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. 3Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.

      6Then God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7God made the expanse, and separated the waters which were below the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so. 8God called the expanse heaven.       20Then God said, “Let the waters teem with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the heavens.” 21God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind; and God saw that it was good. 22God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23There was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.

      24Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth after their kind”; and it was so. 25God made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good.

      26Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; 30and to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to every thing that moves on the earth which has life, I have given every green plant for food”; and it was so. 31God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. Reflection on Genesis 1:
Genesis 1 is written with such simplicity that a child can grasp it, and yet with such depth that scholars have wrestled with its richness for centuries. Whether you believe this is a poetic framework or a literal historical account, the truths it declares remain constant:

  • God created everything.

  • He did it with purpose and intention.

  • He made humanity in His image—male and female, to work together, not in rivalry but in unity.

  • He called His creation “good,” and only after mankind was made did He call it “very good.”

  • He gave mankind a divine assignment: to fill the earth, subdue it, and rule over the other living things.

We do not serve a God of confusion or randomness. Creation was not the result of chaos or cosmic accident. It was a masterpiece, painted stroke by stroke by the hand of God.

In a world that often devalues God’s design—denying creation, rejecting gender distinctions, or elevating nature above humanity—we are called back to this foundational truth: we are image-bearers of the Creator, designed with identity and purpose.

Application:
How you view Genesis 1 shapes how you live. If God created everything with purpose, then your life is not meaningless. You are not an accident. Your body, your identity, your relationships—all have been designed with intention. Let that truth humble you before your Creator and embolden you to live out your calling.

Take time to reflect on what it means to be made in His image. Honor God’s design—in yourself, in others, in creation, and in the gift of male and female partnership. Live with gratitude and reverence, knowing your life is part of His intentional plan.

Creator God, thank You for the beauty and purpose of Your creation. Help me to embrace the truth that I am made in Your image and called to reflect Your glory in how I live. Teach me to honor the design You declared good—from the rhythms of creation to the roles You’ve established. May I walk humbly in Your wisdom, confident in Your purpose, and in awe of who You are. How we treat others—especially our spouses and spiritual family—reflects how seriously we take our covenant with God.

Key Verse:
“For I hate divorce,” says the Lord, the God of Israel, “and him who covers his garment with violence,” says the Lord of armies. “So be careful about your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously.” —Malachi 2:16 (NASB)

Background Context:
Malachi 2 continues God’s rebuke toward the priests and the people of Israel for corrupting their relationship with Him through dishonor, disobedience, and broken covenants. The priests were leading the people astray, and the people were treating marriage lightly, divorcing the wives of their youth and turning to foreign women who served other gods. God calls out this betrayal and makes it clear: covenant faithfulness matters deeply to Him.

Priests to Be Disciplined

      1“And now this commandment is for you, O priests. 2“If you do not listen, and if you do not take it to heart to give honor to My name,” says the LORD of hosts, “then I will send the curse upon you and I will curse your blessings; and indeed, I have cursed them already, because you are not taking it to heart. 3“Behold, I am going to rebuke your offspring, and I will spread refuse on your faces, the refuse of your feasts; and you will be taken away with it. 4“Then you will know that I have sent this commandment to you, that My covenant may continue with Levi,” says the LORD of hosts. 5“My covenant with him was one of life and peace, and I gave them to him as an object of reverence; so he revered Me and stood in awe of My name. 6“True instruction was in his mouth and unrighteousness was not found on his lips; he walked with Me in peace and uprightness, and he turned many back from iniquity. 7“For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge, and men should seek instruction from his mouth; for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts. 8“But as for you, you have turned aside from the way; you have caused many to stumble by the instruction; you have corrupted the covenant of Levi,” says the LORD of hosts. 9“So I also have made you despised and abased before all the people, just as you are not keeping My ways but are showing partiality in the instruction.

Sin in the Family

      10“Do we not all have one father? Has not one God created us? Why do we deal treacherously each against his brother so as to profane the covenant of our fathers? 11“Judah has dealt treacherously, and an abomination has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah has profaned the sanctuary of the LORD which He loves and has married the daughter of a foreign god. 12“As for the man who does this, may the LORD cut off from the tents of Jacob everyone who awakes and answers, or who presents an offering to the LORD of hosts.

      13“This is another thing you do: you cover the altar of the LORD with tears, with weeping and with groaning, because He no longer regards the offering or accepts it with favor from your hand. 14“Yet you say, ‘For what reason?’ Because the LORD has been a witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant. 15“But not one has done so who has a remnant of the Spirit. And what did that one do while he was seeking a godly offspring? Take heed then to your spirit, and let no one deal treacherously against the wife of your youth. 16“For I hate divorce,” says the LORD, the God of Israel, “and him who covers his garment with wrong,” says the LORD of hosts. “So take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously.”

      17You have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet you say, “How have we wearied Him?” In that you say, “Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and He delights in them,” or, “Where is the God of justice?”

Reflection on Malachi 2:
God doesn’t just care about what happens in the temple—He cares about what happens in the home. In this chapter, we see how spiritual compromise starts when leaders become careless, and how that compromise spreads to families and marriages. The people of Israel were breaking their marriage vows, betraying trust, and ignoring the sanctity of their covenants. And God noticed.

He reminds them that He was witness to their marriages, that He created marriage not just for companionship but for raising godly offspring. The pain and damage caused by unfaithfulness grieve the heart of God, because they misrepresent His own steadfast love and faithfulness to us.

When we are careless with our promises to others, we are ultimately dishonoring the One who never breaks His promises to us. God desires that His people be known for their loyalty, truth, and integrity—especially in relationships.

Application:
Are there areas in your life where you’ve become casual about commitments—especially in marriage or within your spiritual responsibilities? Ask God to help you realign your heart with His values. If there are broken relationships, take a step toward reconciliation or repentance.

Let your word be trustworthy. Let your love be faithful. Let your life reflect the covenant-keeping nature of the God you serve.

Closing Prayer:
Father, thank You for being faithful even when we are not. Teach me to take my commitments seriously—especially in my marriage, my family, and my walk with You. Help me honor You by living with integrity, loyalty, and love. May I never treat lightly what You hold sacred. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

     1My son, if you have become surety for your neighbor,
Have given a pledge for a stranger,

Go, humble yourself, and importune your neighbor.

4Give no sleep to your eyes,

Godly Living in an Ungodly World (1 Peter 3)

How does your life reflect Christ in your relationships and daily interactions?

1 Peter 3 provides deep and practical guidelines for living in a godly way, especially within marriage and in our interactions with others. Peter continues the theme from chapter 2, where he encouraged believers—including servants—to submit even to unjust authorities. Here, he teaches how husbands, wives, and all believers are to live in a way that honors God, influences others for Christ, and brings blessing even in the face of suffering.

Key Verse:
“But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence.” – 1 Peter 3:15 (NASB)

Background Context:
Peter was writing to believers scattered throughout a pagan world, encouraging them to live differently—to reflect Christ in a culture that rejected Him. The instructions given here were countercultural then, just as they are today. Submission in marriage, returning good for evil, and suffering righteously are not natural human responses. Yet, these behaviors reflect Christ’s humility, love, and purpose. The ultimate goal is not personal comfort or power, but to glorify God and lead others to Him.

1 Peter 3

Godly Living

      1In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, 2as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior. 3Your adornment must not be merely external—braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; 4but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. 5For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands; 6just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear.

      7You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

      8To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit; 9not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing.

AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED, 15but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; 16and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. 17For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong. 18For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; 19in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, 20who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water. 21Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.

    Peter calls wives to submit to their husbands, even if they are unbelievers, so that their respectful and pure behavior may lead them to Christ (1 Peter 3:1-2). This is not about inferiority but about trusting God’s design for marriage and allowing godly conduct to be a testimony. Are you honoring God in the way you respond to your spouse?

  • True Beauty Comes from the Heart
    Rather than focusing on outward appearance, Peter urges women to cultivate “the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit” (1 Peter 3:4). This does not mean women should be silent, but that their strength should be rooted in faith, trust, and godly character. Is your focus more on outward beauty or inner holiness?

  • Husbands: Live With Understanding and Honor
    Peter commands husbands to dwell with their wives “in an understanding way” and to honor them as “fellow heirs of the grace of life” (1 Peter 3:7). This means listening, valuing, and loving their wives as Christ loves the Church. Failure to do so can hinder their prayers. Are you treating your spouse with honor and understanding?

Living as a Reflection of Christ (1 Peter 3:8-17)

  • Bless, Even When You Are Insulted
    Peter calls all believers to be “harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble” (1 Peter 3:8) and to “not return evil for evil” but instead offer blessings (1 Peter 3:9). This is how we demonstrate Christ’s love and righteousness in a world that often opposes us. How do you respond when treated unfairly?

  • Seek Peace and Pursue It
    “The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous, and His ears attend to their prayer” (1 Peter 3:12). God’s favor is upon those who pursue peace and righteousness. Do your words and actions reflect God’s peace in your daily life?

  • Be Ready to Give an Answer for Your Faith
    When suffering for righteousness, Peter encourages believers to be “ready to make a defense” for the hope within them, but “with gentleness and reverence” (1 Peter 3:15). This means being prepared to share our faith in a way that reflects Christ’s love, not arrogance or argumentativeness. Can you explain your faith in a way that draws others to Christ?

Christ, Our Ultimate Example (1 Peter 3:18-22)

  • Suffering with Purpose
    Christ suffered unjustly to bring us to God (1 Peter 3:18). When we endure hardship for righteousness, we follow His example. Do you trust God’s plan, even when you suffer unfairly?

  • Baptism: A Symbol of Our Salvation
    Peter compares baptism to Noah’s salvation through the flood—symbolizing that believers have been saved through Christ’s resurrection (1 Peter 3:21). Baptism does not remove sin, but it is an outward declaration of our inward faith. Have you fully embraced your new identity in Christ?

  • Husbands are to honor their wives as co-heirs of God’s grace.

  • When facing suffering, remind yourself that Christ endured unjust suffering for your sake. Stand firm in faith, knowing that God sees and honors righteousness.

Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me to live in a way that honors You. Help me to be faithful in my relationships, responding to others with grace and humility. Give me the strength to endure trials with patience and to reflect Christ’s love in all I do. May my life be a testimony of Your goodness, and may I always be ready to share the hope that is in me. Background Context: Proverbs 31 is well-known for its description of the “virtuous woman” or “woman of noble character,” but its wisdom applies to both men and women who seek to live lives that reflect God’s wisdom and character. This final chapter of Proverbs serves as a culmination of the themes throughout the book—calling us to embrace wisdom, live with integrity, and seek God in all that we do. Reflection on Proverbs 31:

Whether in our homes, workplaces, or communities, we are called to work faithfully and responsibly, knowing that our efforts honor God.
  • Compassion and Generosity: In addition to her industriousness, the woman of noble character is also compassionate and generous. She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy (Proverbs 31:20). This reflects the heart of God, who cares for the vulnerable and calls us to do the same. True wisdom is not just about personal success; it’s about using what we have to bless others and meet the needs of those around us.
  • Strength and Dignity: Proverbs 31:25 says, “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.” This strength is not just physical but spiritual and emotional. It comes from trusting in God and knowing that He is in control. The ability to “laugh at the days to come” shows a confidence in God’s provision and protection. For us, this means cultivating an inner strength that comes from faith, allowing us to face the future without fear or anxiety.
  • Wisdom and Kindness: The woman in Proverbs 31 speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue (Proverbs 31:26). Her words are marked by kindness, showing that true wisdom is not harsh or judgmental but compassionate and thoughtful. This challenges us to consider how we speak and interact with others. Are our words filled with wisdom and kindness, or do they tear others down?
  • The Fear of the Lord: The most important quality of the woman described in Proverbs 31 is her fear of the Lord (Proverbs 31:30). This reverence for God is the foundation of her character and the source of her wisdom. Charm and beauty may fade, but a life rooted in the fear of the Lord endures. For all of us, the fear of the Lord—respect, awe, and obedience to God—is the key to living a life that honors Him and blesses others.

Upholding God’s Standards: Marriage, Divorce, and the Call to Live Righteously

In a world that increasingly normalizes behaviors contrary to God’s Word, how are we as believers to respond?

Luke 16:18 provides a direct and challenging teaching on marriage and divorce, reminding us of the seriousness with which God views these sacred bonds, and calling us to uphold His standards in our lives.

Key Verse: “Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.” – Luke 16:18 (ESV)

Background Context: In Luke 16, Jesus teaches about stewardship, righteousness, and faithfulness to God’s commandments. Tucked within these teachings is a seemingly unrelated verse on divorce and remarriage (Luke 16:18). At first glance, it may appear out of place, but it carries a powerful message that connects with the broader theme of faithfulness and the importance of upholding God’s standards in all areas of life, particularly in marriage.

      18“Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries one who is divorced from a husband commits adultery.

Reflection on Luke 16:18:

  • The Sanctity of Marriage: Jesus’ statement in Luke 16:18 is clear and direct: divorce and remarriage, outside of God’s intended design, is equated with adultery. This echoes Jesus’ teachings elsewhere in the Gospels, where He affirms that God’s intention for marriage is “until death do us part” (Matthew 19:3-9). Divorce was permitted by the law because of the hardness of human hearts, but it was never God’s ideal. His design for marriage is a lifelong covenant of faithfulness between one man and one woman.
  • Cultural and Moral Decay: In the context of Luke 16, this verse serves as a critique of the Pharisees, who often lowered God’s standards to accommodate cultural norms and human weaknesses. Ellicott’s Commentary points out that the Pharisees’ lax attitude toward divorce was akin to the unjust steward’s act of reducing debts. It reflects a pattern of lowering the standards of God’s commandments to suit personal or societal preferences. Unfortunately, this same trend persists in our modern culture, where behaviors like divorce, abortion, homosexuality, adultery, and fornication are often normalized or excused—even among those who claim to follow Christ.
  • The Call to Uphold God’s Standards: As believers, we are called to uphold God’s standards in a culture that increasingly seeks to lower them. Marriage is just one example where God’s command is clear, yet the world pushes back with its own ideas of convenience, self-gratification, and autonomy. We are reminded that God’s ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9), and we must stand firm in living according to His truth, even when it’s countercultural.
  • Repentance and Restoration: For those who have gone through divorce, this teaching may be difficult to hear. It’s important to remember that God is a God of grace, mercy, and forgiveness. If you have divorced or remarried outside of God’s design, seek His forgiveness with a repentant heart, knowing that He is faithful to forgive (1 John 1:9). But let us not make light of divorce or sin in general. Divorce is a painful and destructive act that often leaves lasting scars on families and individuals. We are called to take marriage seriously, to honor the covenant we make, and to seek God’s guidance in every step of our relationships.
  • Engaging in the Cultural Battle: Beyond our personal lives, we are called to engage in the cultural battle against the normalization of sin. This means speaking out against the lowering of God’s standards in our communities, churches, and governments. It is not enough to say, “It’s not right for me, but let others live how they choose.” We must lovingly yet boldly uphold the truth of God’s Word and seek to bring His light into the darkness. As followers of Christ, we must actively work to promote His values, both in prayer and in action.

Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a servant-leader in the community of faith?

In the Apostle Paul’s first letter to Timothy, we discover a valuable guide that outlines the qualities and characteristics of those who aspire to serve as overseers and deacons in the early Christian church. This guidance, found in 1 Timothy 3, offers timeless wisdom for all who seek to lead and serve within the body of believers.

Reconnect: Before we delve into 1 Timothy 3, let’s remember the context. Paul wrote this letter to Timothy, a young leader in the early Christian community, to provide guidance on various matters within the church. In this chapter, Paul focuses on the qualifications and expectations for overseers and deacons.

What God Has Joined, Let No Man Separate (Marriage)

Jesus has a way of speaking clearly, but sometimes if we don’t like His instruction, we try to find ways to change it, rather than obey it. Divorce is never God’s intent. Because of the hardness of our hearts, He permits it, but that does not make it good.

Mark 10:1-12

Jesus’ Teaching about Divorce

      1Getting up, He went from there to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan; crowds gathered around Him again, and, according to His custom, He once more began to teach them.

      2Some Pharisees came up to Jesus, testing Him, and began to question Him whether it was lawful for a man to divorce a wife. 3And He answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?” 4They said, “Moses permitted a man TO WRITE A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND SEND her AWAY.” 5But Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. 6“But from the beginning of creation, God MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE. 7“FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER, 8AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH; so they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9“What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.”

      10In the house the disciples began questioning Him about this again. 11And He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her; 12and if she herself divorces her husband and marries another man, she is committing adultery.”

Divorce is painful and destructive process… like planting two small plants next to one another in a small plot of ground. After they grow together, the roots intertwine and if you try to separate them you will damage or destroy one or both of the plants in the process.

We should use wisdom and godly council and prayer before selecting a spouse. Avoid choosing based on “warm fuzzy feelings”, as that does not last. After being married, continue investing in your spouse… in knowing, loving, serving them. Each of you seek God together and individually. You will grow closer and closer to each other as you do so. Model your behavior and attitudes toward one another off of Biblical teaching. “Sacrifice” comes before “self” in a successful marriage. Follow the example of how Jesus sacrificed and suffered for the church, symbolically His bride, and how the church is called to follow after His example and instruction… His leadership.

Those who have been through divorce already can be forgiven through the death and resurrection of Christ. He paid the price for our sin. Seek to learn from whatever the situation was and not repeat it.

Father, please bless Your people in marriage. Lead and guide them to make wise choices that are pleasing to You. For those facing difficulty in marriage, please help guide them. Help them to be selfless and sacrificing, putting their spouse ahead of themselves. Help them to seek to draw near to You, and in so doing, grow nearer to each other. For those in situations for which their lives are in danger, please protect and guide them as they face such a harsh situation and seek to make the right decision to find safety. For those who have already been involved in divorce, please forgive them and help them to heal and deal graciously with the resulting complexity of relationships that often comes from divorce, especially if children are involved. Help Your people to stand out from the culture around them in regards to marriage, rather than blend in, so that You would receive glory. Amen.

Long for Your Spouse and for God

I find Song of Solomon 8 a bit hard to fully digest and understand at first. I believe it is at once showing us a passionate and virtuous love between bride and groom and also an allegory for our love for Christ as the true body of Christ.

It begins with an innocence that seems to wish that her love had not the trappings of being king, so that she could love him more privately and without anyone despising her.

It includes some additional allegories, one in verse 8 about the younger daughter who may soon be of courting age.  The story highlights that should the girl be virtuous and avoid men’s advances, she will be honored. Should she be weak and susceptible to temptation, then they will try to protect her. This can also apply to us in a spiritual sense in our relationship with Yeshua. Let us not commit spiritual sin by participating with other false beliefs or false gods. Let us be pure and set aside for our Lord.

Another allegory begins later in verse 11 concerning vineyards. It would appear a reference perhaps to our being good stewards to all our Lord provides to us to manage in this life. All that we have belongs to Him. Let us use it well and consistently with His desires and instructions. Let us not be greedy and driven only by our own desires.

At the close, we see again how she can hardly wait for her love to come. Oh that we should be so anxious for our Lord to come and be with us… that we should put that focus in our prayer, Bible study, and worship time as priority above other daily activities.

Song of Solomon 8

The Lovers Speak

    1“Oh that you were like a brother to me
Who nursed at my mother’s breasts.
If I found you outdoors, I would kiss you;
No one would despise me, either.

      2“I would lead you and bring you
Into the house of my mother, who used to instruct me;
I would give you spiced wine to drink from the juice of my pomegranates.

      3“Let his left hand be under my head
And his right hand embrace me.”

      4“I want you to swear, O daughters of Jerusalem,
Do not arouse or awaken my love
Until she pleases.”

      5“Who is this coming up from the wilderness
Leaning on her beloved?”

“Beneath the apple tree I awakened you;
There your mother was in labor with you,
There she was in labor and gave you birth.

      6“Put me like a seal over your heart,
Like a seal on your arm.
For love is as strong as death,
Jealousy is as severe as Sheol;
Its flashes are flashes of fire,

He entrusted the vineyard to caretakers.
Each one was to bring a thousand shekels of silver for its fruit.

      12“My very own vineyard is at my disposal;
The thousand shekels are for you, Solomon,
And two hundred are for those who take care of its fruit.”

      13“O you who sit in the gardens,
My companions are listening for your voice—
Let me hear it!”

      14“Hurry, my beloved,
And be like a gazelle or a young stag
On the mountains of spices.”

Ask the Lord to help you want more of Him… more worship, more prayer time, more Bible study. Ask Him to make it a desire of your heart and not just another task to be done each day. Let it be exciting to us as if waiting on the one we love to come to see us.

At the same time, for those of us who are married, let us also ask Him to help us continue to long for our spouse in this way that we should cherish our time together and not take it for granted. It is also important that we lead our hearts in how we think about and long for our spouse! Focus on what is good and what is exciting about them.

Stay Passionate About One Another in Marriage

Song of Solomon demonstrates a very clear passionate form of love to be shared between a husband and wife. They appreciate physical beauty and this is good. Many today try to downplay the value of physical beauty, but we should take care neither to overplay or ignore its importance. Try to see past the specific metaphors. They may not make sense to us in our culture and time today, but you can clearly tell that the couple is passionate about one another.  If there is one lesson to take in this regard, perhaps it is a powerful reminder that the Bible was written for us, but not to us. It was written to a Jewish culture of several thousand years ago. To fully understand as YHWH intended, we must seek to understand not just the translated words, but also the cultural significance to the audience at the time it was written.

Admiration by the Bridegroom

     1“How beautiful are your feet in sandals,
O prince’s daughter!
The curves of your hips are like jewels,
The work of the hands of an artist.

      2“Your navel is like a round goblet
Which never lacks mixed wine;
Your belly is like a heap of wheat
Fenced about with lilies.

      3“Your two breasts are like two fawns,
Twins of a gazelle.

      4“Your neck is like a tower of ivory,
Your eyes like the pools in Heshbon
By the gate of Bath-rabbim;
Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon,
Which faces toward Damascus.

      5“Your head crowns you like Carmel,
And the flowing locks of your head are like purple threads;
The king is captivated by your tresses.

      6“How beautiful and how delightful you are,
My love, with all your charms!

The Union of Love

     10“I am my beloved’s,
And his desire is for me.

      11“Come, my beloved, let us go out into the country,
Let us spend the night in the villages.

      12“Let us rise early and go to the vineyards;
Let us see whether the vine has budded
And its blossoms have opened,
And whether the pomegranates have bloomed.
There I will give you my love.

      13“The mandrakes have given forth fragrance;
And over our doors are all choice fruits,
Both new and old,
Which I have saved up for you, my beloved.

A husband and wife should embrace being passionate about one another. Strive not to drift to being just friendly roommates. Continue to seek to know, love, and serve one another with passion. This is God’s intention for us in marriage.
