The Testimonies That Point to Yeshua (John 5:31-47)

How many witnesses must testify before we will believe?

Key Verse:
“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me.” —John 5:39 (NASB)

Background Context:
In this passage, Yeshua responds to the accusations from the Jewish leaders who were offended at His claim to equality with God. He does not merely ask them to take His word for it. Instead, He lays out a compelling case with multiple witnesses: John the Baptist, His own miraculous works, the voice of the Father, and the Scriptures themselves. Despite all of this, many still refuse to believe. Yeshua also confronts their misplaced confidence in Moses—pointing out that Moses, whom they claim to follow, wrote about Him.

John 5:31-47

     31“If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true. 32“There is another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.

Witness of John

      33“You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth. 34“But the testimony which I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35“He was the lamp that was burning and was shining and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.

Witness of Works

      36“But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for the works which the Father has given Me to accomplish—the very works that I do—testify about Me, that the Father has sent Me.

Witness of the Father

      37“And the Father who sent Me, He has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form. 38“You do not have His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He sent.

Witness of the Scripture

      39“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; 40and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. 41“I do not receive glory from men; 42but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves. 43“I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44“How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God? 45“Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have set your hope. 46“For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me. 47“But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

Reflection on John 5:31–47:
Yeshua provides a courtroom-like argument in this passage. He acknowledges that self-testimony isn’t enough under the law, so He brings forward multiple witnesses:

  • John the Baptist, a prophet they respected, testified of Him.

  • His works, the miracles and healings, openly confirmed that the Father had sent Him.

  • The Father Himself, through signs and words, affirmed Yeshua’s identity.

  • The Scriptures, especially the writings of Moses, point directly to Him.

The tragedy, however, is not a lack of evidence. The real issue is the condition of their hearts. He tells them, “You do not have the love of God in yourselves.” They search the Scriptures with diligence but miss the very One to whom the Scriptures point.

It’s a cautionary message for us today as well. We can know Scripture well and still miss the heart of it if we are unwilling to come to Yeshua in faith and submission. He challenges our desire for human recognition—saying they sought the approval of men more than the glory that comes from God. When we prioritize cultural affirmation or peer acceptance over divine truth, we can become blind to the testimony right in front of us.

Yeshua’s final statement is piercing: “If you believed Moses, you would believe Me.” Many who claim to follow the Old Testament fail to see how it all points to Yeshua. And many who follow the New Testament reject the importance of Moses’ writings. But Yeshua connects them together. Believing in Him means believing what Moses wrote—and vice versa.

Application:
Ask yourself: am I willing to believe Yeshua—not just intellectually, but with full surrender? Are there areas of my life where I am still seeking approval from people more than from God? Do I read Scripture only for knowledge, or to truly encounter and obey the One it reveals? Don’t miss the many testimonies pointing to Him—Scripture, miracles, history, and the Spirit—all drawing us to respond.

Closing Prayer:
Father, thank You for the clear testimony You’ve given about Your Son. Help us to open our hearts to Yeshua and not just our minds. May we seek Your glory above the praise of men, and believe not only His words but also the writings of Moses that point to Him. Let our study of Scripture bring us closer to Your heart and deepen our trust in Your plan. In Yeshua’s name, amen.

From Testimony to Truth (John 4:39-45)

A personal testimony can open hearts—but it’s encountering Yeshua directly that transforms them forever.

Key Verse:
“It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed the Savior of the world.” —John 4:42 (NASB)

Background Context:
The story of the Samaritan woman at the well doesn’t end with her conversation with Yeshua. Transformed by her encounter, she runs back to her city, boldly proclaiming what He revealed to her. Her simple testimony—“He told me all the things that I have done”—is enough to stir curiosity and spark belief among many.

But something deeper happens when the Samaritans hear Yeshua for themselves. They invite Him to stay, and He does—two full days. During that time, many more believe, not just because of the woman’s words, but because they encounter the Word Himself. Her witness brought them to the door, but it was the voice of the Messiah that truly opened their hearts.

Meanwhile, Yeshua travels to Galilee, where He notes that “a prophet has no honor in his own country.” The contrast is striking—foreigners welcome Him with openness, while those who should have honored Him often respond with skepticism. Even still, the Galileans, having seen His signs in Jerusalem, receive Him—though it seems their welcome is based more on miracles than on understanding who He really is.

John 4:39-45

The Samaritans

      39From that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all the things that I have done.” 40So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41Many more believed because of His word; 42and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed the Savior of the world.”

      43After the two days He went forth from there into Galilee. 44For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. 45So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast.

Reflection on John 4:39–45:
This passage shows the power of a changed life and a bold testimony. One woman’s transformation leads to an entire community encountering the Messiah. Never underestimate how your story of redemption—no matter how simple—can draw others to seek Yeshua.

Yet it also reminds us that true belief is not secondhand. People may come to faith through someone else’s testimony, but lasting faith is built on a personal relationship with Yeshua. The Samaritans believed first because of her words, but they stayed and listened to Him, and then they knew He was the Savior.

Notice also the reality of rejection: Jesus, the Son of God, was not honored by His own people. This shows us that acceptance and praise are not always signs of truth being received deeply. And rejection is not necessarily a sign that we’ve failed in our witness. If they rejected the perfect One, we shouldn’t be surprised when some reject us too.

Application:
Are you sharing your testimony with others—even if it feels simple? Are you encouraging those around you not just to hear about Jesus but to seek Him personally?

Don’t be discouraged if others reject the message at first. Keep planting seeds. And make sure your own faith rests not only on what others have said but on what you have experienced in relationship with Yeshua yourself.

Father, thank You for the power of a transformed life and the boldness to share what You’ve done. Help me to speak truthfully and clearly about my testimony, pointing others to Your Son. May those who hear not stop at my words but go on to hear Your voice and follow You. Strengthen my faith as I listen to You daily, and help me never grow weary of proclaiming the hope found in Yeshua. Amen.

From Judgment to Restoration: God’s Unfailing Love (Hosea 2)

How does God respond when we turn away from Him?

Hosea 2 reveals the depth of God’s love, showing us that even in the face of rebellion, He pursues us with the intent to restore and redeem.

Key Verse: “Therefore, I am now going to allure her; I will lead her into the wilderness and speak tenderly to her.” – Hosea 2:14 (NIV)

Background Context: In Hosea 2, God continues to use Hosea’s personal story as a symbol for His relationship with Israel. The chapter opens with strong language of judgment and unfaithfulness, as Israel’s idolatry is compared to a wife’s adultery. However, the chapter shifts dramatically from judgment to hope, as God expresses His desire to restore and renew His relationship with His people. The imagery of a marriage that was once broken being restored is central to this chapter, revealing God’s heart of forgiveness and grace.

Israel’s Unfaithfulness Condemned

      1Say to your brothers, “Ammi,” and to your sisters, “Ruhamah.”

And her adultery from between her breasts,

      3Or I will strip her naked
And expose her as on the day when she was born.

Because they are children of harlotry.

      6“Therefore, behold, I will hedge up her way with thorns,
And I will build a wall against her so that she cannot find her paths.

      7“She will pursue her lovers, but she will not overtake them;
And she will seek them, but will not find them.
Then she will say, ‘I will go back to my first husband,
For it was better for me then than now!’

      8“For she does not know that it was I who gave her the grain, the new wine and the oil,
And lavished on her silver and gold,
Which they used for Baal.

      9“Therefore, I will take back My grain at harvest time
And My new wine in its season.
I will also take away My wool and My flax
Given to cover her nakedness.

      10“And then I will uncover her lewdness
In the sight of her lovers,
And no one will rescue her out of My hand.

      11“I will also put an end to all her gaiety,
Her feasts, her new moons, her sabbaths

Restoration of Israel

14“Therefore, behold, I will allure her,
Bring her into the wilderness
And speak kindly to her.

      15“Then I will give her her vineyards from there,
And the valley of Achor as a door of hope.
And she will sing there as in the days of her youth,
As in the day when she came up from the land of Egypt.

      16“It will come about in that day,” declares the LORD,
“That you will call Me Ishi
And will no longer call Me Baali.

      17“For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth,
So that they will be mentioned by their names no more.

      18“In that day I will also make a covenant for them
With the beasts of the field,
The birds of the sky
And the creeping things of the ground.
And I will abolish the bow, the sword and war from the land,
And will make them lie down in safety.

      19“I will betroth you to Me forever;
Yes, I will betroth you to Me in righteousness and in justice,
In lovingkindness and in compassion,

      20And I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness.
Then you will know the LORD.

      21“It will come about in that day that I will respond,” declares the LORD.
“I will respond to the heavens, and they will respond to the earth,

      22And the earth will respond to the grain, to the new wine and to the oil,
And they will respond to Jezreel.

      23“I will sow her for Myself in the land.
I will also have compassion on her who had not obtained compassion,
And I will say to those who were not My people,

Reflection on Hosea 2:

  • The Reality of Unfaithfulness and Its Consequences: The first part of the chapter (Hosea 2:2-13) paints a stark picture of Israel’s unfaithfulness. God describes how Israel has turned to false gods, likening the nation’s idolatry to a wife being unfaithful to her husband. The pursuit of other gods is called out as spiritual adultery. God warns of the consequences of this unfaithfulness, which includes separation and judgment (Hosea 2:6-7). This section shows us the seriousness of sin and the distance it creates between us and God. When we turn away from God, there are real consequences, as our sin breaks our relationship with Him.
  • God’s Discipline Is an Act of Love: Though God declares judgment on Israel for its unfaithfulness, even His discipline is an expression of His love. In Hosea 2:6-7, God says He will block Israel’s path and hedge her in with thorns. This imagery reflects the way God often allows difficulties and consequences to come into our lives, not as a form of revenge but as a way to lead us back to Him. God’s discipline is meant to turn Israel’s heart back to Him and make her realize that her pursuit of false gods and worldly pleasures is empty. In our own lives, we can see that sometimes God allows us to face challenges or experience the consequences of our actions so that we might return to Him and seek His grace.
  • God’s Tender Call to Restoration: In one of the most beautiful shifts in Scripture, Hosea 2:14 reveals God’s heart of restoration: “Therefore, I am now going to allure her; I will lead her into the wilderness and speak tenderly to her.” Despite Israel’s rebellion, God does not abandon His people. Instead, He seeks to “allure” or “woo” them back to Him. The wilderness, which can symbolize isolation or hardship, becomes a place where God speaks tenderly and lovingly to His people, drawing them back into a restored relationship. God’s Redeeming Love in the Face of Rebellion (Hosea 1)

What does it mean to love someone who has been unfaithful?

In Hosea 1, we see a powerful image of God’s enduring love and His willingness to redeem even when His people have turned away from Him.

Key Verse: “When the Lord began to speak through Hosea, the Lord said to him, ‘Go, marry a promiscuous woman and have children with her, for like an adulterous wife this land is guilty of unfaithfulness to the Lord.’” – Hosea 1:2 (NIV)

Background Context: Hosea is a prophet called by God to deliver a difficult and heart-wrenching message to the people of Israel. At the time, Israel was steeped in idolatry, unfaithfulness, and rebellion against God. In a striking and symbolic command, God tells Hosea to marry a woman who would be unfaithful to him, representing Israel’s unfaithfulness to God. Hosea’s Wife and Children

      8When she had weaned Lo-ruhamah, she conceived and gave birth to a son. 9And the LORD said, “Name him Lo-ammi, for you are not My people and I am not your God.”

      10Yet the number of the sons of Israel
Will be like the sand of the sea,
Which cannot be measured or numbered;
And in the place
Where it is said to them,
“You are not My people,”
It will be said to them,
“You are the sons of the living God.”

      11And the sons of Judah and the sons of Israel will be gathered together,
And they will appoint for themselves one leader,
And they will go up from the land,
For great will be the day of Jezreel.

Reflection on Hosea 1:

  • The Pain of Unfaithfulness: God instructs Hosea to marry a promiscuous woman as a prophetic act symbolizing Israel’s spiritual adultery (Hosea 1:2). Just as Gomer would be unfaithful to Hosea, so Israel had been unfaithful to God by worshiping other gods and turning away from His covenant. Childlike Faith: Receiving the Kingdom with Humility and Trust (Luke 18:15-17)

What does it mean to have childlike faith?

In Luke 18:15-17, Jesus shows us the value of a simple, trusting heart that approaches God with humility, just like a child.

Key Verse: “Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” – Luke 18:17 (ESV)

Background Context: In Luke 18:15-17, parents are bringing their children to Jesus so that He might bless them. However, the disciples try to stop them, likely thinking that Jesus had more important matters to attend to. God’s Guidance of His People in Spite of Their Unfaithfulness

     1Listen, O my people, to my instruction;

            Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

      2I will open my mouth in a parable;
I will utter dark sayings of old,

      3Which we have heard and known,
And our fathers have told us.

      4We will not conceal them from their children,
But tell to the generation to come the praises of the LORD,
And His strength and His wondrous works that He has done.

      5For He established a testimony in Jacob
And appointed a law in Israel,
Which He commanded our fathers
That they should teach them to their children,

      6That the generation to come might know, even the children yet to be born,
That they may arise and tell them to their children,

      7That they should put their confidence in God
And not forget the works of God,
But keep His commandments,

      8And not be like their fathers,
A stubborn and rebellious generation,
A generation that did not prepare its heart
And whose spirit was not faithful to God.

      9The sons of Ephraim were archers equipped with bows,
Yet they turned back in the day of battle.

      10They did not keep the covenant of God
And refused to walk in His law;

      11They forgot His deeds
And His miracles that He had shown them.

      12He wrought wonders before their fathers
In the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.

      13He divided the sea and caused them to pass through,
And He made the waters stand up like a heap.

      14Then He led them with the cloud by day
And all the night with a light of fire.

      15He split the rocks in the wilderness
And gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths.

      16He brought forth streams also from the rock
And caused waters to run down like rivers.

      17Yet they still continued to sin against Him,
To rebel against the Most High in the desert.

      18And in their heart they put God to the test
By asking food according to their desire.

      19Then they spoke against God;
They said, “Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?

      20“Behold, He struck the rock so that waters gushed out,
And streams were overflowing;
Can He give bread also?
Will He provide meat for His people?”

      21Therefore the LORD heard and was full of wrath;
And a fire was kindled against Jacob
And anger also mounted against Israel,

      22Because they did not believe in God
And did not trust in His salvation.

      23Yet He commanded the clouds above
And opened the doors of heaven;

      24He rained down manna upon them to eat
And gave them food from heaven.

      25Man did eat the bread of angels;
He sent them food in abundance.

      26He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens
And by His power He directed the south wind.

      27When He rained meat upon them like the dust,
Even winged fowl like the sand of the seas,

      28Then He let them fall in the midst of their camp,
Round about their dwellings.

      29So they ate and were well filled,
And their desire He gave to them.

      30Before they had satisfied their desire,
While their food was in their mouths,

      31The anger of God rose against them
And killed some of their stoutest ones,
And subdued the choice men of Israel.

      32In spite of all this they still sinned
And did not believe in His wonderful works.

      33So He brought their days to an end in futility
And their years in sudden terror.

      34When He killed them, then they sought Him,
And returned and searched diligently for God;

      35And they remembered that God was their rock,
And the Most High God their Redeemer.

      36But they deceived Him with their mouth
And lied to Him with their tongue.

      37For their heart was not steadfast toward Him,
Nor were they faithful in His covenant.

      38But He, being compassionate, forgave their iniquity and did not destroy them;
And often He restrained His anger
And did not arouse all His wrath.

      39Thus He remembered that they were but flesh,
A wind that passes and does not return.

      40How often they rebelled against Him in the wilderness
And grieved Him in the desert!

      41Again and again they tempted God,
And pained the Holy One of Israel.

      42They did not remember His power,
The day when He redeemed them from the adversary,

      43When He performed His signs in Egypt
And His marvels in the field of Zoan,

But gave over their life to the plague,

      51And smote all the firstborn in Egypt,
The first issue of their virility in the tents of Ham.

      52But He led forth His own people like sheep
And guided them in the wilderness like a flock;

      53He led them safely, so that they did not fear;
But the sea engulfed their enemies.

      54So He brought them to His holy land,
To this hill country which His right hand had gained.

      55He also drove out the nations before them
And apportioned them for an inheritance by measurement,
And made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.

      56Yet they tempted and rebelled against the Most High God
And did not keep His testimonies,

      57But turned back and acted treacherously like their fathers;

      58For they provoked Him with their high places
And aroused His jealousy with their graven images.

      59When God heard, He was filled with wrath
And greatly abhorred Israel;

      60So that He abandoned the dwelling place at Shiloh,
The tent which He had pitched among men,

And His glory into the hand of the adversary.

      62He also delivered His people to the sword,
And was filled with wrath at His inheritance.

      63Fire devoured His young men,
And His virgins had no wedding songs.

      64His priests fell by the sword,
And His widows could not weep.

      65Then the Lord awoke as if from sleep,

      66He drove His adversaries backward;
He put on them an everlasting reproach.

      67He also rejected the tent of Joseph,
And did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,

      68But chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount Zion which He loved.

      69And He built His sanctuary like the heights,
Like the earth which He has founded forever.

      70He also chose David His servant
And took him from the sheepfolds;

      71From the care of the ewes with suckling lambs He brought him
To shepherd Jacob His people,
And Israel His inheritance.

      72So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart,
And guided them with his skillful hands.

Jesus’ Public Ministry
