Choose Wisdom Over Temptation (Proverbs 1:8-19)

Have you ever been tempted to make choices that you knew were wrong? In Proverbs 1:8-19, we find wisdom that warns us about the dangers of following the wrong path and the allure of temptation.

(Summarized and continued after the scripture)

Proverbs 1:8-19

The Enticement of Sinners

     8Hear, my son, your father’s instruction
And do not forsake your mother’s teaching;

      9Indeed, they are a graceful wreath to your head
And ornaments about your neck.

      10My son, if sinners entice you,
Do not consent.

      11If they say, “Come with us,
Let us lie in wait for blood,
Let us ambush the innocent without cause;

      12Let us swallow them alive like Sheol,
Even whole, as those who go down to the pit;

      13We will find all kinds of precious wealth,
We will fill our houses with spoil;

      14Throw in your lot with us,
We shall all have one purse,”

      15My son, do not walk in the way with them.
Keep your feet from their path,

      16For their feet run to evil
And they hasten to shed blood.

      17Indeed, it is useless to spread the baited net
In the sight of any bird;

      18But they lie in wait for their own blood;
They ambush their own lives.

      19So are the ways of everyone who gains by violence;
It takes away the life of its possessors.

Summary Key Points:

  1. Listen to Wisdom: The passage begins with an appeal to listen to the wisdom and instruction of our parents and mentors. They guide us in making choices that align with God’s principles.
  2. Resist Temptation: Solomon, the author of Proverbs, vividly describes the temptation presented by sinners who entice others into wrongdoing. These individuals cast a snare and lie in wait to ambush the innocent.
  3. Wrong Choices Lead to Destruction: Solomon emphasizes the consequences of yielding to temptation. Choosing to follow the path of sinners may lead to death and destruction, both physically and spiritually.
  4. The Pursuit of Ill-Gotten Gain: The allure of material gain often drives people to commit sinful acts. Solomon warns against the pursuit of wealth through unjust means, as it can have dire consequences.
  5. The Importance of Separation: To avoid the enticement of sinful influences, it’s crucial to separate from those who lead us astray. Choosing godly companions and mentors helps us stay on the path of righteousness.

As we reflect on the importance of choosing wisdom over temptation, let’s take these actions:

Pray for Discernment: Spend time in prayer, asking God to grant you discernment in all your relationships and decisions. Seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to help you distinguish between the path of wisdom and the path of temptation.

Evaluate Your Influences: Reflect on your friendships and associations. Are there individuals or situations that entice you toward unwise choices? Pray for strength and courage to distance yourself from any negative influences.

Pray for One Another: Extend your prayers beyond yourself. Pray for your friends, family, and even those who may be struggling with temptation. Ask God to guide them toward wisdom and righteousness.

Let’s commit to living wisely and seeking God’s guidance as we navigate life’s challenges and choices.

May the grace and peace of our Lord, Yeshua, be with you.

Proverbs 1:1-7

The Usefulness of Proverbs

     1The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:

      2To know wisdom and instruction,
To discern the sayings of understanding,

      3To receive instruction in wise behavior,
Righteousness, justice and equity;

      4To give prudence to the naive,
To the youth knowledge and discretion,

      5A wise man will hear and increase in learning,
And a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel,

      6To understand a proverb and a figure,
The words of the wise and their riddles.

      7The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge;
Fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Summary Key Points:

  1. A Wealth of Wisdom: Proverbs is a collection of teachings and sayings that offer priceless insights and guidance. Just as we strive for knowledge to succeed academically, pursuing godly wisdom can help us navigate life more effectively.
  2. The Gift of Understanding: These verses emphasize that the teachings found in Proverbs can provide us with a deep understanding and insight into life’s complexities. It’s akin to gaining wisdom from those who have walked the path before us.
  3. Honoring Our Guides: Proverbs highlights the importance of heeding the counsel of our parents and mentors. Much like respecting the wisdom of a trusted elder, we should be open to learning from those with more experience.
  4. The Fear of the Lord: The passage underscores that the foundation of wisdom is the fear of the Lord. This doesn’t imply being frightened but rather having a profound reverence and respect for God, similar to how we honor those in authority.

Apply Wisdom: Take a moment to reflect on the value of godly wisdom in your life. How can the teachings from Proverbs guide you in making better decisions and living in a way that pleases God? Consider how seeking wisdom can enrich your journey.

Wisdom Calls the Righteous, Fools Pursue Folly

Take time to consider the treasure of wisdom in Proverbs. Reflect prayerfully on how it applies in your life today.

Proverbs 17

Contrast the Upright and the Wicked

1Better is a dry morsel and quietness with it
Than a house full of feasting with strife.

      2A servant who acts wisely will rule over a son who acts shamefully,
And will share in the inheritance among brothers.

      3The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold,
But the LORD tests hearts.

      4An evildoer listens to wicked lips;
A liar pays attention to a destructive tongue.

      5He who mocks the poor taunts his Maker;
He who rejoices at calamity will not go unpunished.

      6Grandchildren are the crown of old men,
And the glory of sons is their fathers.

      7Excellent speech is not fitting for a fool,
Much less are lying lips to a prince.

      8A bribe is a charm in the sight of its owner;
Wherever he turns, he prospers.

      9He who conceals a transgression seeks love,
But he who repeats a matter separates intimate friends.

      10A rebuke goes deeper into one who has understanding
Than a hundred blows into a fool.

      11A rebellious man seeks only evil,
So a cruel messenger will be sent against him.

      12Let a man meet a bear robbed of her cubs,
Rather than a fool in his folly.

      13He who returns evil for good,
Evil will not depart from his house.

      14The beginning of strife is like letting out water,
So abandon the quarrel before it breaks out.

      15He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous,
Both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD.

      16Why is there a price in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom,
When he has no sense?

      17A friend loves at all times,
And a brother is born for adversity.

      18A man lacking in sense pledges
And becomes guarantor in the presence of his neighbor.

      19He who loves transgression loves strife;
He who raises his door seeks destruction.

      20He who has a crooked mind finds no good,
And he who is perverted in his language falls into evil.

      21He who sires a fool does so to his sorrow,
And the father of a fool has no joy.

      22A joyful heart is good medicine,
But a broken spirit dries up the bones.

      23A wicked man receives a bribe from the bosom
To pervert the ways of justice.

      24Wisdom is in the presence of the one who has understanding,
But the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth.

      25A foolish son is a grief to his father
And bitterness to her who bore him.

      26It is also not good to fine the righteous,
Nor to strike the noble for their uprightness.

      27He who restrains his words has knowledge,
And he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.

      28Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is considered wise;
When he closes his lips, he is considered prudent.

Who Wants Longer Life and More Peace?

The rewards of wisdom are to be esteemed and sought after, but let us clearly keep in mind that it is YHWH who defines godly wisdom which we seek. It is not worldly wisdom or the wisdom of men that we seek, for this is often corrupted and leads us away from YHWH.

Proverbs 3 calls it right out to get our attention. Who wants longer life and more peace? I certainly do. Those are some of the rewards of godly wisdom.

Proverbs 3

The Rewards of Wisdom

1My son, do not forget my teaching,
But let your heart keep my commandments;

      2For length of days and years of life
And peace they will add to you.

      3Do not let kindness and truth leave you;
Bind them around your neck,
Write them on the tablet of your heart.

      4So you will find favor and good repute
In the sight of God and man.

      5Trust in the LORD with all your heart
And do not lean on your own understanding.

      6In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight.

      7Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the LORD and turn away from evil.

      8It will be healing to your body
And refreshment to your bones.

      9Honor the LORD from your wealth
And from the first of all your produce;

      10So your barns will be filled with plenty
And your vats will overflow with new wine.

      11My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD
Or loathe His reproof,

      12For whom the LORD loves He reproves,
Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.

      13How blessed is the man who finds wisdom
And the man who gains understanding.

      14For her profit is better than the profit of silver
And her gain better than fine gold.

      15She is more precious than jewels;
And nothing you desire compares with her.

      16Long life is in her right hand;
In her left hand are riches and honor.

      17Her ways are pleasant ways
And all her paths are peace.

      18She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her,
And happy are all who hold her fast.

      19The LORD by wisdom founded the earth,
By understanding He established the heavens.

      20By His knowledge the deeps were broken up
And the skies drip with dew.

      21My son, let them not vanish from your sight;
Keep sound wisdom and discretion,

      22So they will be life to your soul
And adornment to your neck.

      23Then you will walk in your way securely
And your foot will not stumble.

      24When you lie down, you will not be afraid;
When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.

      25Do not be afraid of sudden fear
Nor of the onslaught of the wicked when it comes;

      26For the LORD will be your confidence
And will keep your foot from being caught.

      27Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due,
When it is in your power to do it.

      28Do not say to your neighbor, “Go, and come back,
And tomorrow I will give it,
When you have it with you.

      29Do not devise harm against your neighbor,
While he lives securely beside you.

      30Do not contend with a man without cause,
If he has done you no harm.

      31Do not envy a man of violence
And do not choose any of his ways.

      32For the devious are an abomination to the LORD;
But He is intimate with the upright.

      33The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked,
But He blesses the dwelling of the righteous.

      34Though He scoffs at the scoffers,
Yet He gives grace to the afflicted.

      35The wise will inherit honor,
But fools display dishonor.

Take some time. Read through this again, slowly. Test each verse for how it applies to your life. Ask the Spirit to open your eyes and guide you clearly. Are there changes you need to make to pursue God’s wisdom? Make them. Give thanks to God for offering His wisdom.
