Baptism of Repentance

We often think about baptism today as a public symbol of our dedication to Yeshua as our LORD and Savior. While this is correct, it is not complete. When he was preparing the way for Yeshua, John taught the baptism of repentance. Let us never lose site of this aspect. We are to repent of our wicked ways, the wrong ways we do things, our ways… and turn to Yahweh’s ways. Baptism in water is symbolic. Baptism of repentance is powerful and pleasing to the LORD.

Mark 1:1-8

Preaching of John the Baptist

      1The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

      2As it is written in Isaiah the prophet:
“BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU,
WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY;

      3THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS,
‘MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD,
MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT.’”

4John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5And all the country of Judea was going out to him, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. 6John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist, and his diet was locusts and wild honey. 7And he was preaching, and saying, “After me One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to stoop down and untie the thong of His sandals. 8“I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Yeshua also preached the  importance of repentance.

Matthew 4:17

   17From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Luke 24:44-47

   44Now He said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, 47and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

I invite you to pray with me:

Father, please help me not to be content with symbolic water baptism alone. Help me be passionate to leave behind my way of doing things and to learn and do Your ways. Lead me in transformational repentance that changes my life forever. Amen.

Shalom
