The Fragrance of Costly Worship (John 12:1-11)

July 23, 2025 John (HFJ Director)

True worship is never wasted—it fills the room and moves the heart of God.

Key Verse:
“Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.” —John 12:3 NASB

Background Context:
Six days before Passover, Jesus returns to Bethany, the home of His close friends Mary, Martha, and Lazarus—the same Lazarus whom He had raised from the dead. A supper is prepared in His honor. During the meal, Mary does something startling: she pours out an extremely expensive perfume on Jesus’ feet and wipes them with her hair. Her act of devotion draws criticism from Judas Iscariot, but Jesus defends her. Meanwhile, the religious leaders plot not only to kill Jesus, but also Lazarus, whose very life was a testimony that pointed people to the truth.

(Continued and expanded after scripture.)

John 12:1-11

Mary Anoints Jesus

1Jesus, therefore, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2So they made Him a supper there, and Martha was serving; but Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him. 3Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, who was intending to betray Him, said, 5“Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and given to poor people?” 6Now he said this, not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box, he used to pilfer what was put into it. 7Therefore Jesus said, “Let her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of My burial. 8“For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.”

9The large crowd of the Jews then learned that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He raised from the dead. 10But the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also; 11because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and were believing in Jesus.

Reflection on John 12:1–11:
Mary’s worship was extravagant. What she poured out in a moment could have funded a year of wages. But to her, nothing was too valuable to give to the One who gave her brother back and had given her so much more. Her act was bold, deeply personal, and beautifully prophetic. Whether she fully realized it or not, she was anointing Jesus for His burial.

Worship like that makes people uncomfortable. Judas masked his greed with concern for the poor, but his real problem was that Mary’s devotion exposed the shallowness of his own heart. Jesus silenced the criticism and honored her: “Let her alone… you do not always have Me.” Mary understood something the others didn’t—Jesus wouldn’t be with them much longer.

Her worship filled the house with fragrance. True worship always leaves a mark—it affects the atmosphere, reveals the heart, and honors the Savior.

Meanwhile, the chief priests plotted murder—not just of Jesus, but of Lazarus too. Why? Because his life was undeniable proof of Jesus’ power. He was living evidence that forced people to choose: believe, or resist.

Application:
What are you holding back that could be poured out at Jesus’ feet? True worship costs something—your pride, your resources, your comfort. But when it’s given in love, it’s never wasted. Let your worship rise, not only in songs, but in sacrificial devotion.

Also, remember: when you live as a testimony of what Jesus has done, some will be drawn to believe—and others may resist you. Don’t be discouraged. Like Lazarus, your life points to the resurrection power of Christ.

Closing Prayer:
Lord, I want to worship You like Mary did—freely, fully, and without shame. Help me to offer what I’ve been holding back and to honor You with all that I am. Let my life be a testimony of Your power and goodness. And when resistance comes, keep me faithful. In Yeshua’s name, amen.

May the grace and peace of our Lord, Yeshua, be with you.

John Golda
