When our Messiah gives us instruction, we should listen. This may seem obvious to some, but for many they may be missing the point.
16“Whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. 17“But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face 18so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.
We should not fast to get attention from men. Quite the opposite. We want to handle our physical appearance and our attitudes so they will not even know we are fasting. It is the LORD we want to notice, not men.
While this does apply directly to fasting, it also applies to many other things also. Do not serve or seek the LORD is such a manner as to get the attention of man. Do so to get the attention of God and because we love Him and want to please Him.
