Why Do You Put Traditions Above Commandments of God?

In Matthew 15:1-20, Jesus reminds us that we should be careful to follow the instructions of God and clearly distinguish those from the traditions of man.

Traditions can be very comforting and can initially be well intended…  trying to help translate the commands of God into actionable, specific steps or actions. However, we must be careful not to get so attached to the traditions of men, that we lose connection to the original instructions of God.

15 Some Pharisees and teachers of religious law now arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus. They asked him, “Why do your disciples disobey our age-old tradition? For they ignore our tradition of ceremonial hand washing before they eat.”

Jesus replied, “And why do you, by your traditions, violate the direct commandments of God? For instance, God says, ‘Honor your father and mother,’[a] and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’[b] But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’ In this way, you say they don’t need to honor their parents.[c] And so you cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition. You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote,

‘These people honor me with their lips,
    but their hearts are far from me.
Their worship is a farce,
    for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’[d]

10 Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. “Listen,” he said, “and try to understand. 11 It’s not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth.”

12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you realize you offended the Pharisees by what you just said?”

13 Jesus replied, “Every plant not planted by my heavenly Father will be uprooted, 14 so ignore them. They are blind guides leading the blind, and if one blind person guides another, they will both fall into a ditch.”

15 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Explain to us the parable that says people aren’t defiled by what they eat.”

16 “Don’t you understand yet?” Jesus asked. 17 “Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer. 18 But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you. 19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. 20 These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you.”

Jesus also strongly makes the case to his disciples that we can not be overly concerned about offending people if they do not like to hear the truth of God’s word. We must teach the truth of the gospel even if it upsets some who prefer the traditions of men.

Ask yourself, what traditions are you holding on to? Do you get so focused on the tradition that you miss the original intent of God’s instruction? Are the traditions you hold on to even based on God’s instruction, or are they contrary to it?

Where traditions are in contrast to God’s instruction or replace God’s instruction, we must reject them. Traditions should support and point to God’s instruction, but never replace it.

“Anyone Who Isn’t With Me Opposes Me” – Jesus

There is much to explore with Jesus in Matthew 12:22-37 including His power over Satan and Satan’s demons, His ability to heal, the willingness of many to see the truth about Jesus from the evidence they witness and the rejection of Jesus by those who are evil regardless of the evidence presented to them.

22 Then a demon-possessed man, who was blind and couldn’t speak, was brought to Jesus. He healed the man so that he could both speak and see. 23 The crowd was amazed and asked, “Could it be that Jesus is the Son of David, the Messiah?”

24 But when the Pharisees heard about the miracle, they said, “No wonder he can cast out demons. He gets his power from Satan,[d] the prince of demons.”

25 Jesus knew their thoughts and replied, “Any kingdom divided by civil war is doomed. A town or family splintered by feuding will fall apart. 26 And if Satan is casting out Satan, he is divided and fighting against himself. His own kingdom will not survive. 27 And if I am empowered by Satan, what about your own exorcists? They cast out demons, too, so they will condemn you for what you have said. 28 But if I am casting out demons by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God has arrived among you. 29 For who is powerful enough to enter the house of a strong man like Satan and plunder his goods? Only someone even stronger—someone who could tie him up and then plunder his house.

30 “Anyone who isn’t with me opposes me, and anyone who isn’t working with me is actually working against me.

31 “So I tell you, every sin and blasphemy can be forgiven—except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which will never be forgiven. 32 Anyone who speaks against the Son of Man can be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, either in this world or in the world to come.

33 “A tree is identified by its fruit. If a tree is good, its fruit will be good. If a tree is bad, its fruit will be bad. 34 You brood of snakes! How could evil men like you speak what is good and right? For whatever is in your heart determines what you say. 35 A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. 36 And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak. 37 The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you.”

Let’s review a couple key points:

  • Jesus heals a demon possessed man who is blind, cannot speak. Those who are unbiased in their view observe the evidence and immediately consider it as pointing toward Jesus as Messiah. Even those with evil in their heart cannot deny that the miracle happened or that a demon was cast out and the man healed. Instead, they make up a wild explanation to continue their pre-existing bias against Jesus. They refuse to see.
  • Jesus takes the time to clearly show the wicked why their argument against Him makes no sense, despite knowing they will ultimately reject Him anyway. He tells them the truth and gives them the opportunity to turn toward Him.
  • This demonstration of the power of God to cast out a demon demonstrates also that God has power over Satan.
  • Jesus reminds us that there is no neutral position, no quiet position “sitting on the fence”. “Anyone who isn’t with me opposes me, and anyone who isn’t working with me is actually working against me.” [Matthew 12:30]. We must each decide if we are working with Jesus or we are working against Him. It requires more than quietly acknowledging Him with our lips and then refusing to speak out against sin and speak up for God’s way. It requires living boldly for Jesus and proclaiming Him loudly – even in the face of persecution.Jesus speaks of the unpardonable sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. There can be some Christian debate on to what exactly Jesus is referring. One likely conclusion is that Jesus is speaking of the Pharisees experiencing an undeniable miracle of the Holy Spirit, and consciously choosing to reject this evidence and instead attribute the event to power from Satan.  There are examples of others, like Saul of Tarsus who later became Paul, who rejected the Holy Spirit at first and then accepted it later. Thus we conclude it is not a one time rejection, but rather a continuous and willful rejection of the Holy Spirit.
  • Jesus uses the wickedness of the Pharisees as an example for us to understand how to use discernment to evaluate the wickedness of someone’s heart. We are to identify or judge a tree by its fruit. While we should do so carefully and with grace, we are given direct example from Jesus that we are to use discernment to identify the wicked / evil. By discerning properly, we will be better prepared to tune out the false teaching of the evil and focus on proper teaching and leadership of the righteous.
  • Continuing, Jesus reminds us that we are accountable for our words, that they represent an overflow of the condition of the heart, and are very powerful and at times can be either helpful or destructive.

There is a lot of important teaching to dwell on in this small amount of scripture. I encourage each of you to read it again and think about how to apply each part to your life to grow closer to Jesus.

When We Fail to Wait for God

Few would dispute that Abram (later Abraham) was a man of great faith. He enjoyed a personal and close relationship with God. There were times during which Abram demonstrated amazing faith, and then other times, as in Genesis 16 , when we may find ourselves asking… “Why did he do that?” while we read the scriptures.

16 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had not been able to bear children for him. But she had an Egyptian servant named Hagar. So Sarai said to Abram, “The Lord has prevented me from having children. Go and sleep with my servant. Perhaps I can have children through her.” And Abram agreed with Sarai’s proposal. So Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian servant and gave her to Abram as a wife. (This happened ten years after Abram had settled in the land of Canaan.)

So Abram had sexual relations with Hagar, and she became pregnant. But when Hagar knew she was pregnant, she began to treat her mistress, Sarai, with contempt. Then Sarai said to Abram, “This is all your fault! I put my servant into your arms, but now that she’s pregnant she treats me with contempt. The Lord will show who’s wrong—you or me!”

Abram replied, “Look, she is your servant, so deal with her as you see fit.” Then Sarai treated Hagar so harshly that she finally ran away.

The angel of the Lord found Hagar beside a spring of water in the wilderness, along the road to Shur. The angel said to her, “Hagar, Sarai’s servant, where have you come from, and where are you going?”

“I’m running away from my mistress, Sarai,” she replied.

The angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit to her authority.” 10 Then he added, “I will give you more descendants than you can count.”

11 And the angel also said, “You are now pregnant and will give birth to a son. You are to name him Ishmael (which means ‘God hears’), for the Lord has heard your cry of distress. 12 This son of yours will be a wild man, as untamed as a wild donkey! He will raise his fist against everyone, and everyone will be against him. Yes, he will live in open hostility against all his relatives.”

13 Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the Lord, who had spoken to her. She said, “You are the God who sees me.”[a] She also said, “Have I truly seen the One who sees me?” 14 So that well was named Beer-lahai-roi (which means “well of the Living One who sees me”). It can still be found between Kadesh and Bered.

15 So Hagar gave Abram a son, and Abram named him Ishmael. 16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Ishmael was born.

We must observe that Abram and Sarai’s choice to try to fulfill  God’s plan rather than waiting on God resulted in much trouble and sorrow for them and for generations to follow. It is a great reminder to us in our journey with God not to be discouraged and quit when we make mistakes, but rather to pick ourselves up and resume our journey with God as best we can, asking forgiveness and trying to learn from our mistakes.

One aspect we can learn from Abram’s actions in this passage is how to wait on God and how to discern if a solution someone proposes lines up with the word of God. The idea that Abram should have a child through Hagar, who was not his wife, to help God accomplish His promise to Abram is clearly not an idea from God. It does not line up with God’s instruction as to marriage being between one man and one woman and sexual relations being reserved only for a husband and wife in marriage. He commanded this at the beginning with Adam and Eve.

We must challenge ourselves not to try to hurry God’s timing by finding our own solutions to speed things up. We must wait on God to enjoy the fullness of what He has in store for us.

Beware of False Prophets Disguised As Sheep

In Matthew 7:15-20, Jesus once again warns His followers to use discernment and wisdom to judge the motivations and heart of others. We are only able to judge based on actions and words where God judges from the heart and intentions. Though our assessment will be imperfect, we are called to judge the intentions of others wisely and apply that knowledge to protect ourselves and others.

15 “Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. 16 You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18 A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. 19 So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. 20 Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.

It really seems quite obvious in the context of con men or criminals who may wish to rob or harm us for their selfish gain. We naturally identify a need to discern their intent from their actions and use judgment to protect ourselves.

However, Jesus is warning about something much more sinister. His warning applies to those who pretend to be His followers… or pastors or church leaders that pretend (often convincingly) to be serving Jesus when they really serve only their own selfish ambition and greed. Often these wolves know the Bible well, as Satan does… they just twist the scripture when they teach it to mislead their followers to do what they want instead of what God wants.

One of the best ways to recognize these false prophets is to be consistently reading and studying God’s word in the Bible ourselves. Add to your study by using multiple different resources from different, independent Christian leaders. Those who allow themselves to rely solely on a once a week trip to church to listen to someone else talk about the Bible and never or seldom study it themselves are easy prey to false prophets.

Some of the most effective wolves preach from the Bible but intentionally only teach part of the gospel… the part that God is a God of love… the part that makes people feel comfortable in their sinful lives rather than leading them to change. Some even openly say that they do not wish to talk about things that make people sad or uncomfortable. Does that sound like the Jesus of the gospels? No it does not. Jesus confronted sin, made people uncomfortable, and challenged them to change. When we read the Bible we see that while God is a God of love, He is also a God of righteousness and judgment. We are accountable for what we do and what we fail to do.

When a flock is led astray by false prophets, they do not get all that God wants them to have.  They may live their lives missing out on large parts of God’s word… they often become a powerful tool for Satan… a person identifying themselves as Christian, pointing to the Bible, but not living righteously. While the false prophets are accountable to God for their deception, so too are the people responsible for allowing themselves to be misled due to failure to study the scriptures themselves.

It is urgent that we each study God’s word consistently and connect with objective study tools to help us in addition to seeking out a godly church and godly counselors.

Do Not Throw Your Pearls to Pigs

During the sermon on the mount, just after speaking to His disciples about judgment and reproof, Jesus provides important guidance in an interesting metaphor that is very easy to overlook or misunderstand if taken out of context.

Matthew 7:6

“Don’t waste what is holy on people who are unholy.[e] Don’t throw your pearls to pigs! They will trample the pearls, then turn and attack you.

Jesus had just cautioned His disciples not to judge others and condemn them as sinners but rather to focus on addressing the sin in our own lives first and then to help others address the sin in their lives… to act in love to help sinners turn from sin and toward Christ. Now in verse 6, Jesus clarifies that we are certainly called to use discernment and wisdom in sharing the gospel and in our attempts to help others to come to know Jesus.

Jesus calls us to share the good news of the gospel with sinners as He did in His earthly ministry. However, some people will never accept or even respect the gospel or our efforts to share it. They will mock and persecute us as Christians… try to manipulate and trample the sacred scripture we share with them. The guidance in Matthew 7:6 is similar to the guidance God give in Matthew 10:14.

14 If any household or town refuses to welcome you or listen to your message, shake its dust from your feet as you leave.

Essentially what Jesus is addressing is the following:

  • We are called to share the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ with sinners.
  • We have limited time and resources with which to share the gospel and unlimited number of people who need to be reached.
  • We must use our time effectively and efficiently. We use discernment and wisdom to understand the times, places, people, and type of communication that are most effective.
  • If we linger trying to force someone to accept the truth who wishes only to mock it and us as followers of Jesus, we will miss sharing the gospel with many others who may genuinely receive the word and turn to Jesus.

As always, we can come before God humbly in prayer and ask for wisdom and clarity in this area to help us know when and with whom we should share the gospel… and for how long before we shake the dust from our sandals and move on.

What Does the Bible Mean by “Do Not Judge Others…”?

Matthew 7:1-5 contains one of the most misunderstood and misused verses in the Bible. Sometimes this verse is misused intentionally, and sometimes it is because of a lack of understanding. For those that read and accept the Bible as the word of God on a routine basis the context becomes clear. For those who just hear the phrase and that it is from the Bible,  it can be confusing.

“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others.[a] The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.[b]

“And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye[c] when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend,[d] ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.

Does Jesus really mean we should not judge anyone for any wrong behaviors? No. This would be extremely inconsistent with the full body of God’s word to apply this scripture in this way.

From a quick check on common sense we can see from the Old Testament that God has always communicated to man both right and wrong behaviors and motivations. There are plentiful examples in the Old Testament (e.g. Mosaic law) where God actually instructed Moses in the appropriate punishment for wrong behaviors that were to be judged and administered by man. This system was there in part to enable governing, protecting, and leading a godly group of people and to clearly identify and cut off ungodly behavior so it did not become more widely acceptable.

We can certainly apply this today in a commons sense comparison. Who among those who say we should not judge anyone is also calling for us to do away with court systems and free everyone from prison who has been convicted of violent crime? We can all imagine where that road leads… to anarchy, not to godliness.

Pausing and dwelling on Matthew 7:1-5, we see an obvious reminder from God that we need to start by focusing on addressing our own sin. The more we come before God and ask Him in our lives and hearts the further we travel on the journey to holiness and godliness… and the better we are able to help others around us.

Note that Jesus does not say we should not help remove the spec from our friend’s eye, just that we must start with ourselves. Both the log and the spec should be removed.

As we hold ourselves to the standard of godliness revealed in the Bible and take action to eliminate or change our behaviors and our motivations from sinful to righteous, we are also positioned to more effectively help others to see the same godly standards and apply them in their own lives. We do not help others by accepting their sin… we help them the same way we help ourselves… by identifying the sinful motivation and behavior and by rejecting it.

As we are on the journey toward righteousness ourselves and recognize we an never achieve a truly holy standard by ourselves, we should also recognize the grace, mercy and love that Jesus offers to us and we should similarly extend that to others.

A last thought is that we must remember that God judges based on the heart where we as men can only judge effectively based on observable behaviors and actions. We must challenge ourselves to “24 Look beneath the surface so you can judge correctly.” [John 7:24]
