Even Those With God’s Blessing Have Consequences For Their Mistakes

After Rebekah helps Jacob deceive Isaac so that Jacob can receive God’s blessing, the family is basically breaking apart. Isaac is very old and in declining physical health. Rebekah and Isaac have raised their boys with each having clear favorites. Lack of wisdom in selection of ungodly wives for Esau has made the situation worse within the family. Esau is planning to kill Jacob and Rebekah is now planning how to rescue Jacob by sending him away. By the end of this scripture Esau also chooses to leave. Sounds like a soap opera or dramatic television show, but actually it is the subject of historical events as documented in scripture.

Genesis 27:46-Genesis 28:1-9

46 Then Rebekah said to Isaac, “I’m sick and tired of these local Hittite women! I would rather die than see Jacob marry one of them.”

28 So Isaac called for Jacob, blessed him, and said, “You must not marry any of these Canaanite women. Instead, go at once to Paddan-aram, to the house of your grandfather Bethuel, and marry one of your uncle Laban’s daughters. May God Almighty[a] bless you and give you many children. And may your descendants multiply and become many nations! May God pass on to you and your descendants[b] the blessings he promised to Abraham. May you own this land where you are now living as a foreigner, for God gave this land to Abraham.”

So Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Paddan-aram to stay with his uncle Laban, his mother’s brother, the son of Bethuel the Aramean.

Esau knew that his father, Isaac, had blessed Jacob and sent him to Paddan-aram to find a wife, and that he had warned Jacob, “You must not marry a Canaanite woman.” He also knew that Jacob had obeyed his parents and gone to Paddan-aram. It was now very clear to Esau that his father did not like the local Canaanite women. So Esau visited his uncle Ishmael’s family and married one of Ishmael’s daughters, in addition to the wives he already had. His new wife’s name was Mahalath. She was the sister of Nebaioth and the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son.

First I would observe that many look to the early figures in our faith such as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, etc. with great respect. If someone was just making up the whole story or intentionally altering history, they would certainly omit or clean up the messes like the one we are reading about in Genesis with Isaac’s family. They would easily have omitted them. However, they did not. The fact that even the mistakes and embarrassment of the elders of God’s people are recorded in detail is compelling evidence that the Bible is an accurate historical document for those parts of the scripture that were written to be taken literally.

Rebekah apparently learned her lesson in the importance of selecting the proper wife based in part her faith and relationship with God. It is disappointing that they could not help Esau avoid pagan wives. Now after seeing that it does not end well (sorry Esau, too late for you), she is going to take a better approach for Jacob. It is good that she learned from the situation with Esau, but how much better to have learned and applied the lesson of Abraham when he sent his servant to find a wife for Isaac… and found Rebekah! The parents had already lived through this issue personally and still the family failed in this area.

The sins of the parents in this case led to failure within the family structure. Scripture shows that Isaac and Rebekah did not work together and guide their family to love and respect one another, working as a team to serve God and the family. Instead they each gravitated toward favorites and created the roots of bitterness. Then Rebekah made it worse by plotting and scheming against her own husband. Perhaps she could have tried talking to him instead about the issues about which she was concerned?

Each of us should reflect on the errors made by Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob, and Esau. What should they have done differently in each situation? How can we apply those learnings to our family lives?

“Why Couldn’t We Cast Out The Demon?”

Jesus once again demonstrates His power and authority over demons in Matthew 17:14-21 as he casts out a demon with seemingly little effort. However, this scripture actually puts more emphasis around the disciples’ inability to cast out the demon.

14 At the foot of the mountain, a large crowd was waiting for them. A man came and knelt before Jesus and said, 15 “Lord, have mercy on my son. He has seizures and suffers terribly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. 16 So I brought him to your disciples, but they couldn’t heal him.”

17 Jesus said, “You faithless and corrupt people! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” 18 Then Jesus rebuked the demon in the boy, and it left him. From that moment the boy was well.

19 Afterward the disciples asked Jesus privately, “Why couldn’t we cast out that demon?”

20 “You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.[d]

On the surface, this passage may seem to be about Jesus casting out the demon, but as we study we see that is actually of secondary focus. Jesus’ rebuke of the demon is described in one line. There is much more emphasis in this scripture on the disciple’s inability to heal the boy, on their lack of power, and what this reveals about their spiritual condition.

Jesus’ tone while speaking expresses frustration in the lack of faith resulting in the disciples being unable to cast out the demon. The disciples did in fact show some evidence of faith in that they tried to cast out the demon and again in that they did not understand why it did not work… they expected it to work. What we can see though is that the faith of the disciples is still developing and growing. They have farther to go.

The statement about being able to move a mountain with faith of a mustard seed is often misunderstood and misused. It is not simply…

If I believe God exists, I can use His power to do whatever I want.”

More correct would perhaps be to think of it like the following…

“Jesus demonstrated that powerful prayer life, disciplined study of the scriptures, and absolute submission of His life to God’s will are essential in knowing and living God’s will. When we have that kind of relationship with God we will have the faith required to empower us to do whatever is in His will for us.”

It is also helpful to remember that during Jesus’ earthly ministry, God had not yet sent the Holy Spirit to be the helper for the disciples and other believers. That took place after Jesus’ death, resurrection, and return to heaven.  It is actually quite an interesting study to compare the ministry and faith of the disciples before the death and resurrection of Jesus to the same individuals after God had sent the Holy Spirit to be their helper. They transitioned from those that ran, hid, or denied Christ when He was to be crucified to standing strong on their own and proclaiming the good news of the gospel in the face of death. They had faith strong enough to willingly die for Jesus rather than deny Him.

There is yet another subtle point made in this scripture and in many others throughout the New Testament and throughout the Bible as a whole.  If the Bible were, as some claim, just a fictional text written by the followers of Jesus then they would not include so many examples where the disciples themselves failed as part of the text. Those parts could easily be omitted. The fact that the Bible chronicles the failures (along with the successes) of those who are or were leaders of the faith is compelling evidence of the truth of the Bible.

Study the Evidence of the Resurrection Objectively

We see examples in scripture where Pharisees and Sadducees make up wild explanations to explain away the miracles Jesus was plainly doing in the name of God right before their very eyes. People today who do not want to believe in Jesus continue to do the same today.

There is strong evidence of the following, for those who are willing to genuinely study it with an open mind, seeking truth rather than seeking to justify positions they already hold that reject Jesus.

  • Jesus was a real historical figure who performed many miracles
  • Jesus claimed to be God
  • Jesus was brutally tortured, crucified, killed, and buried in a tomb
  • On the third day, the tomb was empty despite guard by Roman soldiers
  • Jesus appeared before many witnesses after His death
  • The disciples were transformed through the death and resurrection of Jesus from those who would hide or deny Him (e.g. Peter) to those willing to suffer and die to proclaim Him.

It is difficult to capture the detailed study of each in a devotional or post. Each of these points can be, and have been, more fully developed by Christian scholars in a variety of books. There are also additional evidences including fulfillment of prophecy that are powerful testimony to the truth of Jesus Christ as God.

I encourage each of you to spend time studying objectively to convince yourselves where the evidence really leads. Even if you believe and already follow Jesus,  studying the evidence can better prepare you to share testimony with non-believers or just to strengthen your own faith for trials that may come your way.

Couple recommendations to get a quick start…

  • Christianity on Trial: Does the Christian faith hold up under scrutiny? What does science tell us about the plausibility of a god? Can we trust the alleged eyewitness testimony of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus?
  • The Third Day, by Hank Hanegraaff, examines factual evidences from the fatal torment and empty tomb to Christ’s appearances and transformation in a way that builds Christians’ confidence in sharing the truth of the gospel.
  • Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus, by Nabeel Qureshi, describes a dramatic journey from Islam to Christianity including the friendships, experiences and investigation that led to conversion.
  • Josh McDowell Ministry, at www.Josh.org. As a young man, Josh McDowell considered himself an agnostic. He truly believed that Christianity was worthless. However, when challenged to intellectually examine the claims of Christianity, Josh discovered compelling, overwhelming evidence for the reliability of the Christian faith.

Jesus Heals the Mute, Crippled, Lame, and Blind!

Matthew 15 is filled with inspiring record of Jesus’ earthly ministry. Jesus talks about inner purity, the importance of following God’s law instead of man’s tradition, and responds in compassion to the request of the gentile woman to cast out a demon. What follows next in Matthew 15:29-31 is nothing short of amazing.

29 Jesus returned to the Sea of Galilee and climbed a hill and sat down. 30 A vast crowd brought to him people who were lame, blind, crippled, those who couldn’t speak, and many others. They laid them before Jesus, and he healed them all. 31 The crowd was amazed! Those who hadn’t been able to speak were talking, the crippled were made well, the lame were walking, and the blind could see again! And they praised the God of Israel.

It is all too easy to read quickly over these few lines of scripture. But if we intentionally pause and dwell on this scripture we see another amazing record where Jesus performed His miracles in front of large crowds. It was certainly no slight of hand or trick, but the power of God Himself. Those who could not talk could now talk… the lame, the blind, the crippled… all healed in front of large crowds that had known these people and known that they were truly suffering with these conditions before Jesus healed them.

There will always be those like the Pharisees, who make up wild reasons to rationalize Jesus was not God. They look at the evidence and then choose to make up explanations to avoid the natural and obvious conclusion that Jesus is God. Some major world religion is based on logic such as this… rejecting the accurate record of the Bible and creating new records that just make up a new story about Jesus to say He is only a prophet and that He did not die for us and come back from the dead… despite irrefutable evidence of the public and brutal execution and the empty tomb and the many witnesses who saw Him for 40 days after He rose from the dead.

Jesus was clearly recognizable by the crowds and they saw in mass the miracles He performed during His earthly ministry. As His followers, we can know that He is God… just like He said. He does not ask us to just take His word for it, but rather came down to live among us and leave us much evidence.

Biblical Evidences

My passion is to study, understand, and share the gospel of Jesus Christ and the entirety of God’s instruction in the Bible. I truly enjoy reading every day and sharing. God has provided a written document… an instruction manual… that opens up much understanding for those who accept it and study it.

However, many are lost because they turn away from and reject the Bible at the prompting of the world… Satan really.

In lieu of studying scripture directly today, I encourage each of you to visit www.BibleEvidences.com and review the presentation laid out on that site.

The site leads you through a quick, high level review of evidences for the Bible including accuracy of prophecy, archaeological evidence, medical evidence, scientific evidence, review of how carefully and accurately the word of God in the Bible has been preserved, comments briefly on other religions, and then closes with strong historical evidence of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

It is important in our walk with Christ to recognize that God does not call us to have blind faith in following Him, but rather faith based in evidence. He has provided much evidence that His word is true… that He alone is God.

Some stumble in faith because they cannot see God. I can not see gravity, but there is no denying that gravity exists. I do not float away from the ground into the sky, if I stumble I fall to the ground, it takes energy to lift my legs to walk or jump. If we can thus accept and embrace understanding the impacts of gravity on our life by looking at the evidence, then we should also be able to do the same with God.

To ignore the evidence and reject God has eternal consequences… separation from God for eternity in hell. On the other hand, if we choose to accept God through Jesus Christ, then we can spend eternity with God in heaven.

I am truly thankful that God came in the form of Jesus Christ to make a way for us to be saved from our own sin nature and from Satan’s lies.

Assyrian Archaeology Validates Biblical Records – Sennacherib’s Prism

Many try to discredit the Bible by claiming it is historically inaccurate and thus cannot be trusted. On the other hand, I have found it very encouraging as a Christian to read about and study example after example of archaeological evidence that continues to prove the Bible is an historically accurate document that can be trusted with great confidence.

I encourage you to click through to read a bit about the example listed here or browse others from the site.

Read about Sennacherib’s Prism Revealing King Hezekiah on Bible-History.com.

The Account Recorded on the Prism

“On the six inscribed sides of this clay prism, King Sennacherib recorded eight military campaigns undertaken against various peoples who refused to submit to Assyrian domination. In all instances, he claims to have been victorious. As part of the third campaign, he beseiged Jerusalem and imposed heavy tribute on Hezekiah, King of Judah-a story also related in the Bible, where Sennacherib is said to have been defeated by “the angel of the Lord,” who slew 185,000 Assyrian soldiers (II Kings 18-19).” – Oriental Institute

The Biblical Comparison

The best way to see the accuracy of the Biblical account with this record on Sennacherib’s Prism is to compare 2 Kings 18:13-19:37 and Isaiah 36:1-37:38 with the last paragraph on the above account.

It can be very powerful to understand how much physical evidence exists to support the accuracy of the Bible as God’s word. Too often Christians are taught to dismiss the Bible or just accept is on faith. God provided much evidence to support that faith. The better we know it the more effectively we will build confidence within ourselves and in witnessing to others.

The Bible Is An Historically Accurate Record – Pools

Many try to discredit the Bible by claiming it is historically inaccurate and thus cannot be trusted. On the other hand, I have found it very encouraging as a Christian to read about and study example after example of archaeological evidence that continues to prove the Bible is an historically accurate document that can be trusted with great confidence.

I encourage you to click through to read a bit about the two examples listed here or browse others from the site.

For those who think we have found all the evidence there is… the Pool of Siloam was found in 2005. I am sure there is more to find and am excited to study and learn more when God reveals it. In the meanwhile, I enjoy periodically learning more about the evidence already found, but often not shared widely even amongst Christians.

The Resurrection Was Real

The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is foundational to the Christian faith. Jesus took our punishment for our sins upon Himself and suffered the penalty… death. We need only accept Him as Lord and ask forgiveness. When we genuinely accept Him as Lord and ask Him into our lives we change our behaviors and repent from our sins, not immediately and perfectly but repeatedly and consistently as on a long journey, always seeking to move closer to His perfect standard.

John 3:16-21

16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave[g] his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.

18 “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. 19 And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. 20 All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. 21 But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.[h]

What a gracious and wonderful God we serve in Jesus Christ.

Despite the fact that the death and resurrection of Christ had many witnesses, and was well documented in and outside of the Bible, people make up many excuses to try to explain away “the empty tomb”.

I can simplify with a few key points:

  • Jesus was easily recognizable. Crowds of people lined up outside Jerusalem to meet Him and watch Him enter the city a week before He was executed. The people of the city knew who He was and what He looked like.
  • Jesus was brutally beaten and tortured to great physical harm and then publically executed where all could see. Again this was a big public event, crowds gathered and saw Him before and during the crucifixion. It lasted hours.
  • After Jesus’ body was buried in a tomb, Roman soldiers were put on guard. Roman soldiers were well trained and effective troops. The guard was ordered by Pilate himself and thus the guards would have taken the job seriously.
  • The tomb was undeniably found empty. Even the great majority of educated skeptics who have studied historical records cannot deny the empty tomb. To deny Christ, they have to make up wild theories to explain it.
  • Jesus was witnessed by many after He rose from the dead. He moved about freely, not limited by any injury from those that caused His death. He remained among His disciples and followers for 40 days giving many proofs that He was alive.
  • His true followers (excluding Judas, who betrayed Him) went to their deaths (or in John’s case, exile to small island) without ever denying the truth of Jesus Christ as Lord and God. The men closest to Jesus and the events surrounding His death and resurrection were willing to suffer and die for Him when simply denying Him in words would have saved their lives.  They were convinced. They profited nothing in the eyes of the world for staying true to Jesus Christ and gave up all.

I recommend The Third Day, by Hank Hanegraaff as a thorough, easily digestible, and even short book (less than 100 pages and the pages are small) to read to help put in perspective the reality of the resurrection and the foolishness of the myths and lies that people make up to reject it. (This is strictly a personal recommendation as I found this book helpful for me.)

Archaeology Demonstrates Biblical Accuracy – Steles and Stones

All too often Christians are unaware of the archaeological evidence (outside the scriptures themselves) that provide evidence the Bible is true. Please click through to read about a few monuments that have been recovered and their significance, or search them yourself from a search engine.

It seems those who are absolutely set to deny Christianity will always identify some reason not to accept the Bible or Jesus. When we find evidence that shows them wrong, they make up another reason to reject it. No surprise really. Many rejected Jesus even when He came in the flesh that they could see and hear and touch.

For those of us who come with open mind to truly evaluate the evidence… it leads us to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior… as God Himself in the flesh. What a gracious God we serve to leave so many different pieces of evidence for us to continue finding both in scripture and in archaeology.

Scripture is Inspired By God and Useful

Far too many people dismiss the value of scripture that God provides us. Even many who claim the label of Christian still reject His holy word in the Bible and instead listen to their own opinion or that of the news or popular culture.

[2 Timothy 3:16-17] All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

[2 Peter 1:20-21]  Above all, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own understanding, or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God.

[Romans 15:4]  Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled.

All scripture is inspired by God and useful. It is wrong to just pick and choose which scripture in the Bible we “like” and accept those and then decide which we “do not like” and reject those.

God provides scripture to help teach us what is true… to show us when we are wrong and show us what is right. It prepares us to serve Him, and gives us hope and encouragement while we wait for His promises to be fulfilled.

We should challenge ourselves to trust God’s word is true… all of it. If we do not understand part of it, instead of rejecting it, we should invest time to study it and learn more about God. There are amazing tools that make this much easier to do online than you might expect. We have included a collection of links to helpful Bible study resources in the Study The Word section of www.HearingFromJesus.org
