Have you ever considered why the Biblical feasts, or Moedim, are still relevant today, even in the life of a modern believer?
While society eagerly celebrates holidays with questionable origins, there is a profound depth and beauty in reconnecting with the holy days that God Himself ordained.”
Many Christians today learn that the Old Testament festivals are relics of the past, overshadowed by the New Covenant. However, these appointed times—far from being obsolete—offer us a rich tapestry of worship and remembrance, deeply enhancing our understanding of Yeshua’s redemptive work. Yeshua not only honored these holy days but also fulfilled and imbued them with even greater significance.
Understanding the Moedim:
God’s appointed times serve as milestones throughout the year, each with unique lessons about His providence and plans for humanity. These festivals are not just historical commemorations but are vibrant, instructive celebrations that point both to Yeshua’s first coming and His promised return.
- Yom Teruah (Day of Trumpets): Marks a time of spiritual awakening and preparation for Yeshua’s second coming.
- Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement): Emphasizes repentance, atonement, and reconciliation with God, highlighting our continual need for Yeshua as our High Priest.
- Sukkot (Tabernacles): Celebrates God’s provision and foreshadows the future kingdom where Yeshua will dwell among His people.
The Relevance of Passover in Understanding Freedom:
Passover provides a powerful example of God’s deliverance, which is foundational not just for historical reflection but for understanding the nature of our freedom in Yeshua.
- Exodus 13:1-16 explains the importance of Passover as a perpetual observance. It serves as a reminder of God’s mighty hand in liberating the Israelites from Egyptian bondage, paralleling our liberation from sin through Yeshua.
8“You shall tell your son on that day, saying, ‘It is because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ 9“And it shall serve as a sign to you on your hand, and as a reminder on your forehead, that the law of the LORD may be in your mouth; for with a powerful hand the LORD brought you out of Egypt. 10“Therefore, you shall keep this ordinance at its appointed time from year to year.
and again…
14“And it shall be when your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is this?’ then you shall say to him, ‘With a powerful hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, from the house of slavery. 15‘It came about, when Pharaoh was stubborn about letting us go, that the LORD killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of beast. Therefore, I sacrifice to the LORD the males, the first offspring of every womb, but every firstborn of my sons I redeem.’ 16“So it shall serve as a sign on your hand and as phylacteries on your forehead, for with a powerful hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt.”
Modern Observance of the Moedim: While the absence of the temple alters how we can observe these feasts, their spiritual essence remains significant. Each moed invites us to reflect, rejoice, and renew our commitment to following God’s path, using these times to teach and bond with our families over our shared heritage in Yeshua.
