Assess Each Situation On Its Own Merits Before Making a Decision

Do not think just because someone makes a foolish or arrogant decision once that they can not still be wise in other areas. Sometimes they have a blind spot or they grow and mature after making a mistake or there is simply an area of temptation where they are weak. Don’t assume everything they do is foolish because of a foolish decision they made. We must weigh out every decision on its own merits and not just decide based on our perception of someone else who may be foolish.

Rehoboam acted foolishly when he took over the kingdom from Solomon, telling the people he was going to be a harsh leader over them when they asked for the opposite. He acted against the wise counsel he received and sought after counsel from inexperienced people instead, that already agreed with his opinion. The kingdom was split (2 Chronicles 10)

However in 2 Chronicles 11 we see several decisions that are wise, at least for a time.

2 Chronicles 11:14-23

Jeroboam Appoints False Priests

      14For the Levites left their pasture lands and their property and came to Judah and Jerusalem, for Jeroboam and his sons had excluded them from serving as priests to the LORD. 15He set up priests of his own for the high places, for the satyrs and for the calves which he had made. 16Those from all the tribes of Israel who set their hearts on seeking the LORD God of Israel followed them to Jerusalem, to sacrifice to the LORD God of their fathers. 17They strengthened the kingdom of Judah and supported Rehoboam the son of Solomon for three years, for they walked in the way of David and Solomon for three years.

Rehoboam’s Family

      18Then Rehoboam took as a wife Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David and of Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse, 19and she bore him sons: Jeush, Shemariah and Zaham. 20After her he took Maacah the daughter of Absalom, and she bore him Abijah, Attai, Ziza and Shelomith. 21Rehoboam loved Maacah the daughter of Absalom more than all his other wives and concubines. For he had taken eighteen wives and sixty concubines and fathered twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters. 22Rehoboam appointed Abijah the son of Maacah as head and leader among his brothers, for he intended to make him king. 23He acted wisely and distributed some of his sons through all the territories of Judah and Benjamin to all the fortified cities, and he gave them food in abundance. And he sought many wives for them.

Despite acting foolishly and splitting the kingdom, Rehoboam showed wisdom in, at least for awhile, continuing in the ways of the LORD. The Levites and those from all the tribes of Israel who set their hearts on seeking the LORD God of Israel followed them to Jerusalem, to sacrifice to the LORD God of their fathers. Additionally, Rehoboam is called out for acting wisely in distributing his sons throughout Judah and Benjamin to all the fortified cities presumably to ensure loyalty in the leadership there.

The people who wanted to honor God, but lived in Israel outside Benjamin and Judah were in a tough spot. Were they to just stay away from Rehoboam because of his folly? What then when Jeroboam removed the Levites, appointing his own priests and places of worship, against the word of God? They were between a rock and a hard place. Then they had to pick based on all the facts around them. They could not simply say that they want to avoid Rehoboam because he was foolish.

As I reflect on this I am reminded of a few things:

  • Just because someone makes a foolish decision, even a big one, does not necessarily mean they are foolish in all things. Don’t make your decisions based on whether or not you always agree with someone else. Assess each situation as it comes.
  • People have blind spots to certain things, or may make early mistakes and learn from them.  Consider also that each of us may have blind spots also, and seek wise counsel to help learn what yours may be and to balance out that potential weakness with the counsel of others you trust, even if they may not always agree with you. How you pick these counselors for you is important. Seek God. Look at the fruit in their own lives. Test how they live against scripture. Do not expect perfection or full alignment between your views and theirs. That is kind of the point. Just make sure both are anchored in God’s word.
  • Sometimes you may feel like you are caught between a rock and a hard place. Rehoboam made a foolish decision that made the people unhappy when he became king. However, once the kingdom was split, Jeroboam was even worse. He appointed his own priests to replace the Levites and his own places of worship. I am sure the Levites and others had a hard choice to make, but they left behind what they had to put God as their first priority, to follow His ways.

Father, please lead and guide me. Help me to find wise counsel. Help me to learn my blind spots and how to make wise decisions in spite of them. Help me to have discernment regarding other people, whether they are wise or foolish, especially in regards to whom I will build relationship more closely. Help me to chose Your ways over those of men, even when I must give up what seems like a lot to do so. Amen.

Sin Separates Us from God and From Each Other as the Body of Christ

When the LORD delivers consequences for sin, we can not overcome it through force of armies. None are more powerful than the LORD. It is sad to see a separation in God’s people, and it weakens them before others that may wish them harm. But this consequence was from the LORD who was angered by Solomon for turning away from him (1 Kings 11) and seemingly easily brought about given the poor choices that Rehoboam made when he became king after Solomon.  Some may want to blame God, but in truth it was the sin of Solomon and the foolishness of Rehoboam that created the divide.

2 Chronicles 11:1-13

Rehoboam Reigns over Judah and Builds Cities

      1Now when Rehoboam had come to Jerusalem, he assembled the house of Judah and Benjamin, 180,000 chosen men who were warriors, to fight against Israel to restore the kingdom to Rehoboam. 2But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying, 3“Speak to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, saying, 4‘Thus says the LORD, “You shall not go up or fight against your relatives; return every man to his house, for this thing is from Me.”’” So they listened to the words of the LORD and returned from going against Jeroboam.

      5Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem and built cities for defense in Judah. 6Thus he built Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa, 7Beth-zur, Soco, Adullam, 8Gath, Mareshah, Ziph, 9Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah, 10Zorah, Aijalon and Hebron, which are fortified cities in Judah and in Benjamin. 11He also strengthened the fortresses and put officers in them and stores of food, oil and wine. 12He put shields and spears in every city and strengthened them greatly. So he held Judah and Benjamin.

      13Moreover, the priests and the Levites who were in all Israel stood with him from all their districts.

When we sin and create separation between ourselves and God or create division within those who follow Him, let us not blame God. Instead, let us look internally and evaluate our hearts and minds. Are we living for the LORD? Are we fully submitted to Him? Are we studying and living out His commandments and instructions? Are we seeking Him genuinely to repent and turn back to Him and away from our sins? That is the path to reconciliation, through Christ.

I invite you to pray with me:

Father, please grant me a spirit of full submission to You and a desire to study, understand, and live out Your commands and instructions. When we see division in the body of Christ, let us look humbly to Your word and ensure we are not creating the division. If you bring consequences for our sin, let us not blame You, but reflect on our hearts and minds. Amen.

Beware of Bad Advice

Take great care in whom you place your trust for advice in important matters. Also be cautious that as you seek advice, you do so with humility and a listening ear. Arrogance and pride can block out wise advice.

2 Chronicles 10

Rehoboam’s Reign of Folly

      1Then Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king. 2When Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was in Egypt where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon), Jeroboam returned from Egypt. 3So they sent and summoned him. When Jeroboam and all Israel came, they spoke to Rehoboam, saying, 4“Your father made our yoke hard; now therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you.” 5He said to them, “Return to me again in three days.” So the people departed.

      6Then King Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had served his father Solomon while he was still alive, saying, “How do you counsel me to answer this people?” 7They spoke to him, saying, “If you will be kind to this people and please them and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.” 8But he forsook the counsel of the elders which they had given him, and consulted with the young men who grew up with him and served him. 9So he said to them, “What counsel do you give that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten the yoke which your father put on us’?” 10The young men who grew up with him spoke to him, saying, “Thus you shall say to the people who spoke to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you make it lighter for us.’ Thus you shall say to them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s loins! 11‘Whereas my father loaded you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.’”

      12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day as the king had directed, saying, “Return to me on the third day.” 13The king answered them harshly, and King Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the elders. 14He spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.” 15So the king did not listen to the people, for it was a turn of events from God that the LORD might establish His word, which He spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

      16When all Israel saw that the king did not listen to them the people answered the king, saying,
“What portion do we have in David?
We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse.
Every man to your tents, O Israel;
Now look after your own house, David.”
So all Israel departed to their tents.

17But as for the sons of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. 18Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the forced labor, and the sons of Israel stoned him to death. And King Rehoboam made haste to mount his chariot to flee to Jerusalem. 19So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.

Father, please help me to have a spirit of humility and a listening ear to wise counsel. Help me choose carefully, with discernment, whom I should trust. Let me not have a spirit of arrogance or pride. Amen.

A Different Perspective on Peter’s Denials

Most of us are familiar with the story. Yeshua prophecies to Peter that he will deny Him three times before the rooster crows twice. Peter is adamant that he will not. The situation unfolds, and sure enough, Peter denies Yeshua three times as prophesied. Peter is crushed at having failed his master.

Let’s give a little grace to Peter before we judge him too harshly. Surely we have all had tough times where we may not have denied Yeshua, but perhaps we did not stand up for Him either? Maybe We just remained silent as others disparaged Him. Keep in mind that one way to avoid denying Yeshua is for no one to know you are a follower. Peter was recognized because he stood by the Lord through good times and bad. He was often witnessed in the act alongside Yeshua.

Further, Peter was the only one to follow as the Romans took away Yeshua into custody. Peter would not have even been in position to deny Him if he had not followed behind out of love and devotion, something no one else did. Following took courage.

Mark 14:53-54

  53They led Jesus away to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes gathered together. 54Peter had followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the officers and warming himself at the fire.

Mark 14:66-72

Peter’s Denials

      66As Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant-girls of the high priest came, 67and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Nazarene.” 68But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are talking about.” And he went out onto the porch. 69The servant-girl saw him, and began once more to say to the bystanders, “This is one of them!” 70But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders were again saying to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean too.” 71But he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this man you are talking about!” 72Immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him, “Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And he began to weep.

Let’s give Peter the credit that is due. He was openly and publicly a follower of Yeshua. Many witnesses could recognize him. Peter did not run and hide like the others, but followed Yeshua out of love  and devotion even when things were really getting tough. Yes, that put him in position to fail by rejecting his Lord when he became frightened after being identified. Yes he made a mistake. But also consider how he responds to it. That was the last time he denied Yeshua. He repented, turning away from that behavior. He continued and faced hardship and persecution to spread the truth of the gospel relating Yeshua as Messiah.

Perhaps this brings to mind a few questions we may each benefit from asking ourselves.

Are you prepared to stand up for Jesus Christ in the face of persecution or intimidation by those who oppose Him?

Would anyone even know you are a follower of Christ such that you might be confronted about it?

If you are not sure or answer “no” to the first question, pray for Yahweh to help you be bold and courageous. The Holy Spirit which resides in believers can certainly prepare you.

If you are not sure about the second question or answer “no”… then you should pray for the Father’s help to make you live more boldly as a believer and disciple of Jesus Christ. That your actions, attitudes, and words would proclaim the glory of God.  A true disciple of Jesus does not hide their faith but rather lives as a light to guide others to truth.

Father, please help me to be bold for You. Help me to have courage to stand with You and for You. When people come against me because of You, help me to remain faithful and courageous. Please forgive me when I make mistakes and avoid standing for You just to avoid persecution. Amen.

Yeshua Is The Christ, Not Just a Teacher or Prophet

Those who claim to be holy, set apart for service to Yahweh, are not always what they pretend to be. Certainly this is true today, but we see a dramatic example of this principle in Mark 14.  The chief priests plotted with Judas to betray Yeshua in exchange for money in Mark 14:10-11. Now, later in Mark 14, we see the chief priests with elders and scribes gathered against Him. They are not interested in justice or carrying out Yahweh’s will. They are jealous of Yeshua’s influence and concerned that it challenges their authority. They are willing to murder Him unjustly, but they will make a show of it so they have “cover”.

Even these same priests, who no doubt helped provide the false witnesses to testify against Yeshua, could not find enough consistency in the lies to convict Him. It is only when Yeshua chooses to no longer remain silent that they are able to proceed with their plans.

In no uncertain terms, Yeshua here claims that He is the Son of Yahweh and not simply a teacher or prophet. How interesting that the chief priests, who claim to believe that they are waiting for the coming of the Christ, so quickly convict Yeshua because He admits to being the Christ. They never even considered the evidence that He may be the one they claim to be waiting for!

Mark 14:53-65

Jesus before His Accusers

      53They led Jesus away to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes gathered together. 54Peter had followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the officers and warming himself at the fire. 55Now the chief priests and the whole Council kept trying to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any. 56For many were giving false testimony against Him, but their testimony was not consistent. 57Some stood up and began to give false testimony against Him, saying, 58“We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.’” 59Not even in this respect was their testimony consistent. 60The high priest stood up and came forward and questioned Jesus, saying, “Do You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You?” 61But He kept silent and did not answer. Again the high priest was questioning Him, and saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62And Jesus said, “I am; and you shall see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING WITH THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN.” 63Tearing his clothes, the high priest said, “What further need do we have of witnesses? 64“You have heard the blasphemy; how does it seem to you?” And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death. 65Some began to spit at Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists, and to say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the officers received Him with slaps in the face.

The hypocrisy is sickening. Pure theater by the religious elite. They were not having a trial, they were murdering someone to silence a voice that taught scripture more effectively and truthfully than their man made complex set of requirements no one could follow. This is not unique to Jewish leaders, as it has played out through history also with the Catholic church as well. There are plenty today that teach false, man made doctrine as well.

Watch how they are unable to convict Yeshua without His own testimony! He was so innocent of real sin they could not charge Him on the basis of accurate witnesses. They could not even stage people competently to lie about Him. Continuing in His selfless act of love, Yeshua knew what must come to pass. He speaks the truth, giving the chief priests what they need to condemn Him and execute Him. They waste no time mistreating and brutalizing Him.

Yeshua was innocent of sin. He suffered and died willingly to be a sacrifice for my sin and yours. Picture it as yourself on trial, only we have all done enough wrong they would not need false witnesses. We deserve death as penalty for sin. Yeshua spares us, if we choose Him as Lord and follow Him.

Praise the Father for His plan of salvation for us. Praise to Yeshua for dying for us. What a wonderful act of love!

John 15:13-14

13“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. 14“You are My friends if you do what I command you.

I invite you to pray with me:

Father, thank You for Yeshua, who died for our sins, so we could be reconciled. Give us as Your people that same kind of courage to stand up for You and Your ways. Let us stand in truth even when it is hard. Help guide us and give us the words to say when we are persecuted for our faith and refuse to accept the wicked ways of man. Amen.

See to It That No One Misleads You

The disciples, like most of us, can easily be drawn to marvel at beautiful creations… especially if they are perceived to have good purpose. It troubled them that Yeshua would indicate the temple being destroyed. Yeshua, on the other hand, was more grieved when He saw lost souls, who had rejected Jehovah rather than buildings.

Yeshua warns His disciples of what is to come. I believe He speaks of what has already come to pass, when the Romans occupied Jerusalem and destroyed the temple to the very foundation in 70 AD. It reconnects with the prophecy in Daniel 9:27. As we continue reading in Mark 13 beyond verse 23 (subject for another post) we see that Yeshua is also foreshadowing His return. Thus Yeshua has combined information about the Romans occupation of Jerusalem in the near future for the disciples and His return in the farther out future, which is still yet to come.

He did this without specifically answering the original question of timing, which was not for the disciples to know. We can also learn from this scripture how we should respond in times of darkness and apply it in our lives today.

Mark 13:1-23

Things to Come

      1As He was going out of the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, behold what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!” 2And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left upon another which will not be torn down.”

      3As He was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew were questioning Him privately, 4“Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are going to be fulfilled?” 5And Jesus began to say to them, “See to it that no one misleads you. 6“Many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He!’ and will mislead many. 7“When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be frightened; those things must take place; but that is not yet the end. 8“For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will also be famines. These things are merely the beginning of birth pangs.

      9“But be on your guard; for they will deliver you to the courts, and you will be flogged in the synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them. 10“The gospel must first be preached to all the nations. 11“When they arrest you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour; for it is not you who speak, but it is the Holy Spirit. 12“Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and have them put to death. 13“You will be hated by all because of My name, but the one who endures to the end, he will be saved.

      14“But when you see the ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION standing where it should not be (let the reader understand), then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. 15“The one who is on the housetop must not go down, or go in to get anything out of his house; 16and the one who is in the field must not turn back to get his coat. 17“But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 18“But pray that it may not happen in the winter. 19“For those days will be a time of tribulation such as has not occurred since the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never will. 20“Unless the Lord had shortened those days, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom He chose, He shortened the days. 21“And then if anyone says to you, ‘Behold, here is the Christ’; or, ‘Behold, He is there’; do not believe him; 22for false Christs and false prophets will arise, and will show signs and wonders, in order to lead astray, if possible, the elect. 23“But take heed; behold, I have told you everything in advance.

There is so much information worth studying and praying for wisdom to fully understand, I can’t possibly hope to cover it all in a post. I encourage each of you to prayerfully pursue further study.

Yeshua correctly prophecies about the destruction of the temple, and it seems to tie back to prophecy in Daniel 9:27 as well. God is God. He is aware of what has been, what is, and what will be.

Yeshua warns His disciples to avoid following pretenders, or false prophets, even those who do signs and wonders. We must study the word to recognize and judge good and faithful teachers from false prophets. There are false prophets and we are called to judge who they are! We must reject false doctrine that presumes anyone who says ‘I follow Jesus’ is to be believed or that a teacher who claims to teach the word must not be challenged. Let us judge based on scripture and without hypocrisy.

Do not be surprised that there will be wars and strife. Prepare for it.

Expect to be hated by the world. Expect to be persecuted. It will be hard to be a genuine follower of Christ.

Another common doctrine that many Christians believe is that they will be removed by God before the tribulation. There is no evidence of that in this scripture to be sure. In fact, one might conclude the opposite… that Christians will endure the tribulation. More study is merited on this subject.

20“Unless the Lord had shortened those days, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom He chose, He shortened the days.

So after all this dramatic warning to His disciples, what does Yeshua conclude with?

23“But take heed; behold, I have told you everything in advance

We are to seek to understand the content of Yeshua’s message and use it to prepare ourselves and others. We are not to ponder endlessly about “when” it will happen. The disciples asked that question and Yeshua avoided answering it, instead giving the information He wanted them to focus on.

Challenge yourself to find another significant aspect of Yeshua’s message to His disciples that I did not highlight in this post. The point is… develop the discipline to study the Bible more… so that you can “take heed” as Yeshua calls us to do.

Father, please help me to heed Your word in the Bible. Help me to remain faithful to You even under harsh persecution and death. Please give me the words to say when pressed so that the Holy Spirit would speak through me to point people to You. Let me take care not to follow people simply because they do signs and wonders, as many false prophets will try to lead the elect astray in this manner. Let me not rely solely on what I feel and experience, but help me test everything with discernment against Your word. Amen.

How Shall We Treat God and His Messengers?

Yahweh has created a wonderful world for us to enjoy. He has created each of us as unique and wonderfully made. He gives us each gifts and abilities to use for His glory. He blesses us with life and many more things to help us prosper.  How shall we treat Him and His messengers in return?

Mark 12:1-12

      1And He began to speak to them in parables: “A man PLANTED A VINEYARD AND PUT A WALL AROUND IT, AND DUG A VAT UNDER THE WINE PRESS AND BUILT A TOWER, and rented it out to vine-growers and went on a journey. 2“At the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, in order to receive some of the produce of the vineyard from the vine-growers. 3“They took him, and beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 4“Again he sent them another slave, and they wounded him in the head, and treated him shamefully. 5“And he sent another, and that one they killed; and so with many others, beating some and killing others. 6“He had one more to send, a beloved son; he sent him last of all to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 7“But those vine-growers said to one another, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours!’ 8“They took him, and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard. 9“What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the vine-growers, and will give the vineyard to others.

10“Have you not even read this Scripture:
‘THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED,
THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone;

      11THIS CAME ABOUT FROM THE LORD,
AND IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES’?”

      12And they were seeking to seize Him, and yet they feared the people, for they understood that He spoke the parable against them. And so they left Him and went away.

Take a moment to reflect on how selfish and wicked the vine-growers are… they represent the vast majority of people that God has created. They reject God, His messengers, even His son. They live for themselves. The justify and rationalize their actions as if to avoid recognizing any wrongdoing.

Now reflect on the vineyard owner. How shall he react? God has given much patience and grace already. Many prophets and even His son have come in His name. For those who have welcomed them, they will be received into the kingdom of God. For the many, however, who have rejected and killed and mocked the messengers and son of God, they will face a righteous judgment. They will suffer because of their own choices.

Each of us gets to choose how we treat God and His messengers when He reaches out to us. It is more than just words. We show we accept God through consistent actions and attitudes… through how we choose to live our lives. Will we live selfishly after our own desires and claim with our lips to honor God or will we honor God with our very lives, choosing His ways above our own.

Choose wisely.

Father, please help me to treat You and Your messengers with respect and thankfulness. Let me not live selfishly according to my own desires, but live in submission to You as LORD. Help me to do so joyfully and thankfully! Thank You for my family, my job, my home, and so much more. Thank You for fellow believers, followers of Christ. Amen.

Pray Humbly and Wholeheartedly for Personal Repentance

For those of us who wish to truly submit to Yeshua and follow him, we must be willing to humbly admit our faults in order to change them. Yeshua provides a wonderful example of a sinful man who genuinely comes before YHWH for repentance and contrasts that with someone who is praying in a noticeably prideful manner. I encourage each of us to thoughtfully and humbly read the scripture from Luke and then come before our father in genuine humility, admitting our sins, and ask for genuine forgiveness with wholehearted commitment to repent and sin no more.

Luke 18:9-14

9And He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt: 10“Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11“The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12‘I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’ 13“But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’ 14“I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

All of us remain sinful, no matter where we are in our journey. Take time to identify an area in which you need change and come before YHWH with pure motive and pure heart, privately, and ask forgiveness and ask his help with repentance. Then work consciously to change your wrong behavior and he will help you. Avoid the trap of just asking forgiveness and then continuing in your sin, without repentance and change on your part. If you refuse to change, that is not true repentance and acknowledgment that you are wrong. There is a distinction between having difficulty changing and refusing to change or not trying. Often we will need his help to change our ways as it is difficult for us.

What Can We Learn from the Levitical Priesthood?

Typically sections of scripture about the Levitical priesthood and the temple are often overlooked by Christians as they are taught they are somehow obsolete or do not apply. This is simply not true. There is much to learn.

Comparing the role of the Levites to the priests, sons of Aaron, we can quickly call to mind that it is at the LORD’s discretion to divide us how He sees fit and assign us each what responsibilities He chooses. Ours is not to covet what the task or mission He assigns to someone else, but to focus on doing our own well to glorify His name. Sometimes we will be in a supporting role and not a lead role, like David supporting Solomon to build the temple through his preparations.  Do that supporting role well.

Solomon Reigns

      1Now when David reached old age, he made his son Solomon king over Israel. 2And he gathered together all the leaders of Israel with the priests and the Levites.

Offices of the Levites

      3The Levites were numbered from thirty years old and upward, and their number by census of men was 38,000. 4Of these, 24,000 were to oversee the work of the house of the LORD; and 6,000 were officers and judges, 5and 4,000 were gatekeepers, and 4,000 were praising the LORD with the instruments which David made for giving praise. 6David divided them into divisions according to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

Gershonites

      7Of the Gershonites were Ladan and Shimei. 8The sons of Ladan were Jehiel the first and Zetham and Joel, three. 9The sons of Shimei were Shelomoth and Haziel and Haran, three. These were the heads of the fathers’ households of Ladan. 10The sons of Shimei were Jahath, Zina, Jeush and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei. 11Jahath was the first and Zizah the second; but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, so they became a father’s household, one class.

Kohathites

      12The sons of Kohath were four: Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel. 13The sons of Amram were Aaron and Moses. And Aaron was set apart to sanctify him as most holy, he and his sons forever, to burn incense before the LORD, to minister to Him and to bless in His name forever. 14But as for Moses the man of God, his sons were named among the tribe of Levi. 15The sons of Moses were Gershom and Eliezer. 16The son of Gershom was Shebuel the chief. 17The son of Eliezer was Rehabiah the chief; and Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were very many. 18The son of Izhar was Shelomith the chief. 19The sons of Hebron were Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third and Jekameam the fourth. 20The sons of Uzziel were Micah the first and Isshiah the second.

Merarites

      21The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli were Eleazar and Kish. 22Eleazar died and had no sons, but daughters only, so their brothers, the sons of Kish, took them as wives. 23The sons of Mushi were three: Mahli, Eder and Jeremoth.

Duties Revised

      24These were the sons of Levi according to their fathers’ households, even the heads of the fathers’ households of those of them who were counted, in the number of names by their census, doing the work for the service of the house of the LORD, from twenty years old and upward. 25For David said, “The LORD God of Israel has given rest to His people, and He dwells in Jerusalem forever. 26“Also, the Levites will no longer need to carry the tabernacle and all its utensils for its service.” 27For by the last words of David the sons of Levi were numbered from twenty years old and upward. 28For their office is to assist the sons of Aaron with the service of the house of the LORD, in the courts and in the chambers and in the purifying of all holy things, even the work of the service of the house of God, 29and with the showbread, and the fine flour for a grain offering, and unleavened wafers, or what is baked in the pan or what is well-mixed, and all measures of volume and size. 30They are to stand every morning to thank and to praise the LORD, and likewise at evening, 31and to offer all burnt offerings to the LORD, on the sabbaths, the new moons and the fixed festivals in the number set by the ordinance concerning them, continually before the LORD. 32Thus they are to keep charge of the tent of meeting, and charge of the holy place, and charge of the sons of Aaron their relatives, for the service of the house of the LORD.

Those in the service to the LORD are of high significance. They were explicitly called together as part of making Solomon king.

  •  3The Levites were numbered from thirty years old and upward, and their number by census of men was 38,000. 4Of these, 24,000 were to oversee the work of the house of the LORD; and 6,000 were officers and judges, 5and 4,000 were gatekeepers, and 4,000 were praising the LORD with the instruments which David made for giving praise. 6David divided them into divisions according to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

Overseeing the work of the house of the LORD was a significant effort. 24,000 people were involved.

The Levites also served as officers and judges, presumably to help the people know and follow the ways of the LORD.

The need for so many gatekeepers is interesting. Sounds like they needed to maintain proper control around the temple.

Having 4,000 for praise and worship and the fact that this is assigned as a specific task for a large group is a good reminder that this is an important.

  • 28For their office is to assist the sons of Aaron with the service of the house of the LORD, in the courts and in the chambers and in the purifying of all holy things, even the work of the service of the house of God, 29and with the showbread, and the fine flour for a grain offering, and unleavened wafers, or what is baked in the pan or what is well-mixed, and all measures of volume and size.

The Levites are called to assist, but this does not make their role less important.

We are reminded that there is such a thing as becoming unclean or impure and that separates us from God. We need to be purified to be in His presence. We are purified through the blood of Christ.

The showbread is highlighted as a highlight here as well as grain offerings and a few others aspects. Most of us don’t really understand the significance as it is not taught in Christian churches.  A quick (and incomplete) study indicates it may represent Yahweh’s provision for His people by providing the very bread needed to live. Similarly we may see it foreshadows a picture of Yeshua, the bread of life. Yeshua is holy before God, He provides true sustenance, and He is always present. “Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry’” (John 6:35). Clearly He was indicating more than simple physical hunger, but a spiritual hunger that runs much deeper.

  • 30They are to stand every morning to thank and to praise the LORD, and likewise at evening, 31and to offer all burnt offerings to the LORD, on the sabbaths, the new moons and the fixed festivals in the number set by the ordinance concerning them, continually before the LORD.

Time is set aside to thank and praise the LORD daily and offer any offerings He requires. Though we can clearly not provide offerings Biblically any more as there is no Levitical priesthood or temple, we can set aside time to thank and praise the LORD and observe the sabbaths, new moons, and fixed festivals (e.g. Moedim or appointed times). I invite you to pray with me:

Father, please help me to accept and embrace fully whatever role You assign to me. Lead me in clarity and discernment. Let me not covet what others are doing, but do what I am assigned well to bring honor and glory to Your name. Help open my eyes to the fullness of meaning in all of Your Biblical text, even those that may often be overlooked. Help me to remember to regularly thank and praise You. Lead me in a desire to more fully research and understand Your appointed times including sabbaths and new moons. Open my eyes to how I can live more fully according to Your ways instead of the traditions of men which are taught today. Amen. 

I would encourage you to also take a few minutes and give Him praise and thanks. Be specific where you can. Take your time.  Repeat at least daily. Better if you do more frequently.

A Case Study in Temptation, Sin, Punishment and Repentance

The Bible is anything but boring. There is much excitement, drama, and intrigue. We see the best, and the worst, of people. All seems to be laid bare for us to learn from as we study.

David was a great king and a man after God’s own heart, yet we see where Satan tempted him and led him into prideful sin, angering Yahweh. Following the example of Job, perhaps we must acknowledge also that God allowed Satan to tempt David in this way, perhaps to expose his pride to deal with it. Some of this is a bit of speculation.

As we read 1 Chronicles 21, we may even not fully understand why conducting a census was wrong, but clearly Joab recognized it and counseled David against it. Thus we see David knew better and ultimately made a mistake. It was not that he was acting without the knowledge that this could be displeasing to Yahweh.

Census Brings Pestilence

      1Then Satan stood up against Israel and moved David to number Israel. 2So David said to Joab and to the princes of the people, “Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan, and bring me word that I may know their number.” 3Joab said, “May the LORD add to His people a hundred times as many as they are! But, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord seek this thing? Why should he be a cause of guilt to Israel?” 4Nevertheless, the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Therefore, Joab departed and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem. 5Joab gave the number of the census of all the people to David. And all Israel were 1,100,000 men who drew the sword; and Judah was 470,000 men who drew the sword. 6But he did not number Levi and Benjamin among them, for the king’s command was abhorrent to Joab.

      7God was displeased with this thing, so He struck Israel. 8David said to God, “I have sinned greatly, in that I have done this thing. But now, please take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have done very foolishly.”

      9The LORD spoke to Gad, David’s seer, saying, 10“Go and speak to David, saying, ‘Thus says the LORD, “I offer you three things; choose for yourself one of them, which I will do to you.”’” 11So Gad came to David and said to him, “Thus says the LORD, ‘Take for yourself 12either three years of famine, or three months to be swept away before your foes, while the sword of your enemies overtakes you, or else three days of the sword of the LORD, even pestilence in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the territory of Israel.’ Now, therefore, consider what answer I shall return to Him who sent me.” 13David said to Gad, “I am in great distress; please let me fall into the hand of the LORD, for His mercies are very great. But do not let me fall into the hand of man.”

      14So the LORD sent a pestilence on Israel; 70,000 men of Israel fell. 15And God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it; but as he was about to destroy it, the LORD saw and was sorry over the calamity, and said to the destroying angel, “It is enough; now relax your hand.” And the angel of the LORD was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 16Then David lifted up his eyes and saw the angel of the LORD standing between earth and heaven, with his drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, covered with sackcloth, fell on their faces. 17David said to God, “Is it not I who commanded to count the people? Indeed, I am the one who has sinned and done very wickedly, but these sheep, what have they done? O LORD my God, please let Your hand be against me and my father’s household, but not against Your people that they should be plagued.”

David’s Altar

      18Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 19So David went up at the word of Gad, which he spoke in the name of the LORD. 20Now Ornan turned back and saw the angel, and his four sons who were with him hid themselves. And Ornan was threshing wheat. 21As David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out from the threshing floor and prostrated himself before David with his face to the ground. 22Then David said to Ornan, “Give me the site of this threshing floor, that I may build on it an altar to the LORD; for the full price you shall give it to me, that the plague may be restrained from the people.” 23Ornan said to David, “Take it for yourself; and let my lord the king do what is good in his sight. See, I will give the oxen for burnt offerings and the threshing sledges for wood and the wheat for the grain offering; I will give it all.” 24But King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will surely buy it for the full price; for I will not take what is yours for the LORD, or offer a burnt offering which costs me nothing.” 25So David gave Ornan 600 shekels of gold by weight for the site. 26Then David built an altar to the LORD there and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. And he called to the LORD and He answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering. 27The LORD commanded the angel, and he put his sword back in its sheath.

      28At that time, when David saw that the LORD had answered him on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he offered sacrifice there. 29For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses had made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were in the high place at Gibeon at that time. 30But David could not go before it to inquire of God, for he was terrified by the sword of the angel of the LORD.

We see a case study of Satan leading someone into sin, pride, ignoring the advice of counselor and friend, Yahweh angered and rebukes Israel, and we see David in full and genuine repentance followed by Yahweh’s forgiveness. It is an action packed chapter to be sure and a model for us to study on several accounts.

  • Beware of Satan and his temptations. Spiritual warfare is real. To ignore or underestimate the enemy is to set yourself up to lose battles.
  • Listen carefully to wise counsel from trusted advisors. Truly consider it and not just what you already decided that you want to do.
  • When you have sinned and recognize it, don’t deny it or try to hide it. Come clean and repent before Yahweh, asking forgiveness and mercy. Accept what judgment He decides as consequence.
  • Don’t let someone else pay for your sin. David paid for the property and sacrifices even when offered as a gift from someone else.
  • If your sin has affected others, intercede on their behalf and ask they not be punished due to your guilt.
  • Trust more in the mercy of Yahweh than the mercy of human enemies.
  • Remember that the LORD is righteous and just and He is worthy of fear and reverence. Do not fall into the trap of thinking He is ok with whatever you do and however you live just because He does not strike you down immediately. He let the census take place before bringing consequences.
  • The LORD is not harsh or bad because He punishes us. It is our own sin that is the issue. Don’t blame Him.
