What Does God Require From Me?

Have you ever wondered what God (Jehovah) requires of you? There is much debate among even believers about what God requires of His people. We should look to His word for the answer. God has provided in scripture several summaries to help us get our minds around it. However, in order to properly follow it we must study and pray for God’s help and choose to change our ways and follow His. It is a journey of a lifetime and it is a joy and not a burden to those who love God.

Matthew 22:36-40

36“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37And He [Jesus] said to him, “ ‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ 38“This is the great and foremost commandment. 39“The second is like it, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ 40“On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”

Loving God and loving people. Simple sounding summary but it is often misunderstood because what our society today defines as love is different than what God defines as love. The world tells us that to love someone is to accept them unconditionally as they are… this is not loving God or loving people. Do I show love to my children by letting them do or believe whatever they want? or do I show love to them by instructing and guiding them in truth? I tell my children not to touch a hot stove… I rebuke them and set guidelines for them to steer them in the right way. I show my love for them by guiding and instructing them. They show their love for me by obeying, not by disregarding what I say and doing what they think is right… even when they do not fully understand why I give certain boundaries.

God clearly, and repeatedly, emphasizes obedience to His ways as the answer to “how to love God”. Our motivation is love of God and love of people, but how we demonstrate this through our actions and attitudes is by obeying God’s word.

John 14:15

15“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

John 14:23-24

23Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. 24“He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.

God provides another summary of what He requires of us in Deuteronomy 10.

Deuteronomy 10:12-13

12“Now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require from you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and love Him, and to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13and to keep the LORD’S commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today for your good?

Again we see similar instruction from God. Fear (e.g. respect, revere) God. Walk in His ways and love Him. Do not walk in your own ways or the ways of the world. Serve God with all your heart and soul… not just part of it. Keep His commandments and statutes… for your own good!

Many try to avoid acknowledging the need to obey all God’s commands and statutes as how they should be showing love to God. Instead they want to just call on His name and “have positive thoughts and feelings about Him”. God is displeased by this approach. God wants us to show love by obeying what He has instructed us to do. The first step to doing that is to humbly admit we do not have it all figured out… our society around us and even our church does not have it all figured out. We must pray for His help and study scripture consistently to better understand and apply His instructions to our lives to truly show our love for Him.

Look To God Rather Than Traditions Of Men

There are many different holidays across many different nations around the world. Some of them are good, some are bad, and some are just not very meaningful. All of them started based on an idea to help honor or remember someone or something… ok, some were started so they could sell things to people.

Too often we as followers of Christ do not use discernment in terms of identifying which holidays are ok to celebrate, which should be avoided, and which God commands us to celebrate. We just celebrate whatever the local community celebrates. Yes, God commands us to celebrate several “feasts” during the year. No, the command was not just for the “old times” before Christ.

As we read about the Feast of Unleavened Bread, let us compare how God commands us to celebrate this feast in remembrance of His freeing His people from bondage to the traditions you grew up with from your Christian family heritage, Christian church, or local community. Not many Christians celebrate Passover and Feast of Unleavened Bread, yet God commanded us to do so “throughout [our] generations” as a “permanent ordinance”.

Exodus 12:13-32

Feast of Unleavened Bread

14‘Now this day will be a memorial to you, and you shall celebrate it as a feast to the LORD; throughout your generations you are to celebrate it as a permanent ordinance. 15‘Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, but on the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses; for whoever eats anything leavened from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel. 16‘On the first day you shall have a holy assembly, and another holy assembly on the seventh day; no work at all shall be done on them, except what must be eaten by every person, that alone may be prepared by you. 17‘You shall also observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this very day I brought your hosts out of the land of Egypt; therefore you shall observe this day throughout your generations as a permanent ordinance. 18‘In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread, until the twenty-first day of the month at evening. 19‘Seven days there shall be no leaven found in your houses; for whoever eats what is leavened, that person shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is an alien or a native of the land. 20‘You shall not eat anything leavened; in all your dwellings you shall eat unleavened bread.’”

21Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Go and take for yourselves lambs according to your families, and slay the Passover lamb. 22“You shall take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood which is in the basin, and apply some of the blood that is in the basin to the lintel and the two doorposts; and none of you shall go outside the door of his house until morning.

A Memorial of Redemption

23“For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the LORD will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to come in to your houses to smite you. 24“And you shall observe this event as an ordinance for you and your children forever. 25“When you enter the land which the LORD will give you, as He has promised, you shall observe this rite. 26“And when your children say to you, ‘What does this rite mean to you?’ 27you shall say, ‘It is a Passover sacrifice to the LORD who passed over the houses of the sons of Israel in Egypt when He smote the Egyptians, but spared our homes.’” And the people bowed low and worshiped.

28Then the sons of Israel went and did so; just as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did.

29Now it came about at midnight that the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of cattle. 30Pharaoh arose in the night, he and all his servants and all the Egyptians, and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was no home where there was not someone dead. 31Then he called for Moses and Aaron at night and said, “Rise up, get out from among my people, both you and the sons of Israel; and go, worship the LORD, as you have said. 32“Take both your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and go, and bless me also.”

Do you know that much of the traditions celebrated as part of Easter and Christmas are elements of pagan worship of false gods and offensive to Jehovah? Why is it we have so much enthusiasm to embrace lies and pagan traditions like “Easter Bunny” and “Santa Clause” but we take not the time to celebrate as our Lord God commanded us?  For those of us who genuinely want to follow Him, it is typically because we have been taught incorrectly by our church and our family traditions and it is hard to change. If this is where you are, you should study God’s word more on this subject and obey it, praying for His help. (For more information on Christmas and Easter as a next step, view the Sunburned Part 1 video teaching at 119Ministries.com.)

My family truly finds joy in celebrating according to God’s instruction rather than man’s tradition. Yes it was hard to change but it was worth it to obey God. My wife and I went through some difficult change and now our children are better grounded in truth of God’s word as a foundation for their lives and future generations.

When considering whether or not to celebrate a holiday, look to God rather than the traditions of men… even the traditions of family for generations or Christian churches are usually wrong and influenced by local culture rather than God’s word. Based on God’s instruction, celebrate the holidays He commands in the way He commands. Evaluate both the “what” and the “how” associated with other holidays and traditions based on God’s word to determine whether or not they acceptable or offensive to Him.

This is a difficult topic for many, but for those who wish to submit to and follow God, the burden is light and worthwhile. We trust Him to guide our steps. Pray for His help.

Do Not Negotiate With God, But Rather Obey

Be careful in your life that when Jehovah speaks clearly to you, you do not negotiate with Him but rather obey. He is our Lord and all powerful Creator of everything. His wisdom and His plans are beyond our understanding. We have not position or power or wisdom with which to negotiate with Him. We either obey or disobey, and then receive the consequences of our choice.

By the time we read the history through to Exodus 10, Pharaoh has been through a lot. He started by trusting in his magicians to replicate the signs and wonders God provided. This helped him rationalize that God is not very powerful or special and thus could be ignored or dismissed. Then, when his magicians could no longer replicate the signs, Pharaoh would relent under pressure and agree to let the Israelites go, but then change his mind as soon as the threat was no longer in front of him. It was as if he was rationalizing that it never happened or could not be repeated once it had passed. Now in Exodus 10, Pharaoh first tries to negotiate or compromise with God by allowing only the men to go worship, when God demanded all the people and their livestock to go. It must have been difficult for Pharaoh, a mighty king, to submit humbly to Jehovah. Pharaoh had already decided the people must return, so was trying to keep the children and now, in Exodus 10:21-29, the livestock from going away with the people.

Pharaoh’s hard hearted attempts to bargain or negotiate with God fail. God has already stated His demands and will not change His mind for the likes of Pharaoh.

Exodus 10:20-29

20But the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the sons of Israel go.

Darkness over the Land

21Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward the sky, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even a darkness which may be felt.” 22So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and there was thick darkness in all the land of Egypt for three days. 23They did not see one another, nor did anyone rise from his place for three days, but all the sons of Israel had light in their dwellings. 24Then Pharaoh called to Moses, and said, “Go, serve the LORD; only let your flocks and your herds be detained. Even your little ones may go with you.” 25But Moses said, “You must also let us have sacrifices and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice them to the LORD our God. 26“Therefore, our livestock too shall go with us; not a hoof shall be left behind, for we shall take some of them to serve the LORD our God. And until we arrive there, we ourselves do not know with what we shall serve the LORD.” 27But the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he was not willing to let them go. 28Then Pharaoh said to him, “Get away from me! Beware, do not see my face again, for in the day you see my face you shall die!” 29Moses said, “You are right; I shall never see your face again!”

Be careful that you do not dismiss Pharaoh to easily. We can all be vulnerable to similar patterns of behavior and rationalization. What God tells us to do, we should do and not debate or negotiate. This can apply to His specific will for our lives that He may choose to reveal to us each through prayer or scripture or through other means. It can also apply to His general will, documented so clearly in the Bible. God gave us many instructions to follow to help us know right from wrong and to be set apart from the world clearly to be His people. How many of us though, grow up with a compromised version of which of His rules we are taught we should obey and which we are wrongly taught no longer apply.

Who are we to choose what commandments or instructions we will follow and which we will not? How often I notice that people who claim to follow Him may agree they should not use the Lord’s name in vain, they should honor their parents, not kill, not commit adultery, not steal, not lie, and not covet… but they ignore the Sabbath day, include statues (idols) even in their church and worship, and place many things in priority in their life before God. These things may range from money, lust, sports, job, power, or accepting other false beliefs associated with make believe gods.

God is not pleased when we choose to obey some of what He tells us any more than human parents are pleased when their children obey some of the instructions they are given, but disobey many more. Is a business owner pleased when employees obey half the rules he gives them? Doubtful… he will probably fire those employees. Why then do we expect that we can please God by negotiating or compromising with Him?

Prayerfully examine your own life and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you any areas where you are not fully submitted to God. Also, as you study scripture make note of the instructions God gives His people and test whether or not it still applies and you should be following it today. Pay special attention to the Old Testament passages as many churches today teach wrongly that most of the instruction God gave His people in that time are now obsolete, despite Jesus clearly stating and showing by His life that God’s instruction in the Old Testament is still valid.

Love One Another As Brothers And Sisters In Christ

Many in this world seek to divide people into categories by race, by sex, by nationality, and even at times by the sin they choose to embrace as part of their personal identity. There are many ways for the world to divide itself because of the selfish and sinful nature of those who do the dividing…often for the purpose of their own personal gain. However scripture teaches us that there are only two kinds of people in this world. We are all made in God’s image no matter what the race or nationality or sex.  We are either true followers of Christ or we are not… those are the only categories that matter ultimately.

Galatians 3:28

28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.

If we are one in Christ, then the other divisions don’t matter anymore. We should not think of someone first based on nationality, race, or sex but rather look only on them as to understand whether or not they are a true follower of Christ. This requires more than just saying “I am a Christian”, but rather should be evident in the submission of our lives to doing things God’s way rather than our own way or the way of the world.

For those who are our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, we should love one another and help one another in the example of Christ, Himself.  We show ourselves to be friends of Jesus when we do what He commands us.

John 15:12-15

12“This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. 13“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. 14“You are My friends if you do what I command you. 15“No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.

We should be devoted to one another as brothers and sisters in Christ and let not other “divisions” or “categorizations” separate us one against another. Yes there is a need to identify false teaching and rebuke wrong behavior, with gentleness and respect. At the very heart of it we love each other genuinely and without hypocrisy.

Romans 12:9-13

9Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. 10Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; 11not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; 12rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, 13contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality.

We show love to God by obeying His commands. There are many commands and instructions that are all worth studying and applying for each of us in our lives. However it is always good to start with the summary Jesus provided when asked about which command is most important.

Matthew 22:34-40

34But when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered themselves together. 35One of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, 36“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37And He said to him, “ ‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ 38“This is the great and foremost commandment. 39“The second is like it, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ 40“On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”

As you interact with people throughout your day, both in passing and in deeper relationships, reflect on how you deal with them. Do you see yourself as one with your brothers and sisters in Christ? or do you allow yourself to be divided based on others things like race, nationality, sex, or financial status? The distinction of one who is not a fellow believer is real and should be respected. How we interact with non believers is different from believers… though we can show love to all in an appropriate way.

The next challenge is to ask yourself as you go through your day… “Am I demonstrating my love for God and for my fellow followers of Christ through my actions and my attitudes?” Approach this challenge with humility and be willing to recognize when you are wrong so that you will more easily admit it and make the right course correction so that you do show love more fully and consistently. Prayerfully ask God to help you.

Obey God In All Things

I will freely admit that there are sections of scripture that I have often overlooked as I read through the Bible. I read them, but do not linger and thoughtfully consider why God chose to include it in the Bible. Exodus 4 contains one such scripture. We are reading a very exciting record of God’s commissioning Moses to confront Pharaoh and demand he set God’s people free. Moses goes back and forth with God many times until finally God has led Moses to accept the mission before him.  Between that moment and when God tells Aaron to go meet Moses in Exodus 4:27, there are three verses that are easy to skip over when reading quickly.

Exodus 4:24-26

24Now it came about at the lodging place on the way that the LORD met him and sought to put him to death. 25Then Zipporah took a flint and cut off her son’s foreskin and threw it at Moses’ feet, and she said, “You are indeed a bridegroom of blood to me.” 26So He let him alone. At that time she said, “You are a bridegroom of blood”—because of the circumcision.

I will admit again… that I had to read and reread a few times. I remained here and reviewed a few Bible commentaries at BibleHub.com. The message here is actually quite significant.

Moses was appointed to be the leader and lawgiver to God’s people… God’s representative to them in a time of amazing demonstration of God’s power and communication of His commands. Moses had accepted this mission from God and was proceeding on his way. Moses, however, had neglected to circumcise his own son and received a sharp rebuke from God. Circumcision is an important sign of God’s covenant with His people.

We can only speculate about why Moses failed to circumcise, but it may have something to do with being unequally yoked spiritually with his Midianite wife, who appears to be quite unhappy with the concept of circumcising their son. Whether he failed to comply with God’s instruction to please his wife or out of his own carelessness… God was not pleased.

The message for me is quite powerful. God may ask us to take on a mission for Him, but He still wants us to live in obedience to Him in all aspects of our personal lives as well.  It is particularly important for public leaders of God’s people to obey His commands so as to lead by example and maintain a sense of credibility when leading God’s people. Even if you are not a leader in the body of Christ, God still wants you to obey His commands in all aspects of your life. This is how we show that we love Him.

John 14:23-24  23Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. 24“He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.

Are there aspects of your life that you are not fully complying with God’s instructions? If so, what is holding you back? Prayerfully ask for God’s help to reveal to you any areas you may not recognize and then promptly change your behavior to be in obedience to Him. The desires of God must be first, even before the desires of our spouse or children.

Deuteronomy 6:5  5“You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

Matthew 6:33  33“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

When we seek God first, we do not neglect our spouse or children, but rather we commit do things God’s way and He shows us how to live in right relationship with Him and with our family in a way that is far better than what we would do on our own!

Study God’s Word Directly At The Source… The Bible

I never cease to be amazed by people who claim the Bible is no longer relevant to our lives today. Quite the opposite, when I study scripture I often feel I can in no way capture and share all that God is revealing in even a short element of scripture. The Bible is truly a wonderful gift from God, so easy that a child can understand it and so deep that an adult can study if for a lifetime without reaching the end of its depths.

I encourage everyone to read and study for themselves. That is what God commands us to do and it is the example He set during His earthly ministry as Jesus Christ.  We must remember to read all of God’s word in context, and be careful not to misrepresent it even to ourselves and we must study the Bible and interpret it in light of itself for consistency.

Let us just explore one small section of scripture that is one of many revealing some truth that have been disregarded by mainstream Christianity. In Acts 13, Paul is on a missionary journey. This occurs after Jesus died, rose again, spent time with His disciples and went up to Heaven.

Acts 13:13-15

13Now Paul and his companions put out to sea from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia; but John left them and returned to Jerusalem. 14But going on from Perga, they arrived at Pisidian Antioch, and on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down. 15After the reading of the Law and the Prophets the synagogue officials sent to them, saying, “Brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say it.”

The first observation that seems obvious and many Christians get this right… we must obey the command of Jesus to go and make disciples of all the nations. Christ did not say… sit and wait for them to come to you. But rather we must go to them. Many brothers and sisters in Christ do a remarkable, inspired job of bringing the gospel to others via mission trips or even evangelizing at school or work. However, we should each challenge ourselves not to get to comfortable just “checking a box” each week sitting in church for an hour. That is a great way to experience fellowship and praise God and other things, but it is not all we are commanded to do. We must study our Bible and apply it further in our lives. We are to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to others.

The second observation is quite simply that Paul continues to observe the Sabbath and the reading of the Law and the Prophets. Paul, like Jesus, reinforces observing Sabbath in the Jewish tradition as God commanded… on the seventh day. This means Sabbath is observed from Friday at sundown to Saturday at sundown. Jesus has already risen from the dead and had counsel with His disciples. Here we see Paul (the other disciples did likewise as revealed in scripture elsewhere) recognizing and observing the importance of the Old Testament (e.g. the Law and the Prophets) and worship and gathering on Sabbath. There is of course a much deeper study available, and I am happy to share it with others… just ask by replying at Contact Us if you are interested. It should be apparent as well if you just read and study the New Testament and observe the behavior of Jesus and the disciples regarding Sabbath and the importance of the Old Testament.  If you ask most Christians, they will explain why it has been changed to Sunday instead of Saturday… but ask them to show you where the scripture indicates that. You can’t find it because it is not there.

Many Christians do not even realize that man, not God, changed the Sabbath to Sunday and that the entire Bible, including the Old Testament, are still completely applicable today.

The more I study the Bible, the more clearly I am able to see what God said and differentiate it from what man has said. I will do things God’s way rather than the way of the traditions of men. I encourage you to boldly do the same!

It is important to study God’s word for yourself direction from the Bible. Yes, you can study with others, but go to the source. Don’t believe me… try a game next time you have a gathering of many people. Sit in a circle, start with a message that is several sentences long, or a short story. Have each person, without writing it down, whisper to the next what they heard. By the time it comes around the circle of 10 or so people, you will typically find the message has changed quite a bit. So too if you ignore the Bible and only ask people what it says or only read books about the Bible.

Are People Inherently Good? Why Then Do We Need Laws?

Are people inherently good? This is a question that is crucial in understanding the world around us. The Bible provides a clear answer to this question, but let’s first begin with what you already know from observing the world around you.

What images come to your mind when you imagine a city or country without laws, law enforcement and punishment for breaking laws  (e.g. “lawless”)? Do you immediately think about a wonderful paradise? Does something else come to mind… perhaps something where evil goes unchecked or everyone has to defend themselves. Are you packing your bags to move there? I am not.

Do you think it would work to just open up all the jails, disband the court system and the police and just eliminate all the laws that govern the society where you live? Again… what images come to mind. Lawlessness and that is not a good thing.

Let’s take it a bit further… why do you need tickets to ride the bus, airplane, or go to an event? why do you need security cameras at banks and ATMs? Why do so many have home alarm systems? Why do you need a receipt to return something to a store? Why do you need passwords for almost everything you do on the internet? The answer in all cases is “sin”. If there is no security, people will take advantage of one another.

Even babies do not need to be taught how to make angry or loud noises when they want something or how to grab something they want… even if it is in someone else’s hands. Quite the opposite, young children need to be taught to consider others and not be selfish and sinful. Sadly, most adults still have a lot to learn in this area as well… especially those who reject Jesus Christ.

People are inherently sinful. We all know it when we truly think about it. The answer is already inside of us. Why, then, do many get surprised or upset when someone points out that the Bible reveals our sinful nature and tells us that we all must turn to Jesus, ask forgiveness, turn away from our sins and live according to His commands? How can anyone effectively argue that people are inherently good?

Romans 3:23 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Ecclesiastes 7:20 20Indeed, there is not a righteous man on earth who continually does good and who never sins.

It is important for each of us to realize that we are not inherently good. It is a big part of why we need Jesus Christ. How great is our God that He made a way for us to be redeemed and forgiven… reconciled to Him!

John 3:16-21    16“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17“For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18“He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19“This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. 20“For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21“But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”

Our Creator loves us so much He even gives us laws and commands to guide us to right behavior. God knew we would need laws and guidelines to help us. If we understand and accept that laws made by men help maintain order and sometimes protect us, then why do we complain about laws that God reveals to us through scripture which are designed to protect us and guide us?  The laws are there for our own benefit. Through  God’s law we can understand where we fall short and need to correct our attitudes and behaviors. It only works, however, if we read the Bible and study it for application in our lives. If we dismiss God’s commands, we are left adrift at sea with no steady compass to guide our way.

Deuteronomy 11:26-28 26 “Look, today I am giving you the choice between a blessing and a curse! 27 You will be blessed if you obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you today. 28 But you will be cursed if you reject the commands of the Lord your God and turn away from him and worship gods you have not known before.

Psalm 19:7-13 The instructions of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are clear, giving insight for living. Reverence for the Lord is pure, lasting forever. The laws of the Lord are true; each one is fair. 10 They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold. They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the comb. 11 They are a warning to your servant, a great reward for those who obey them.

12 How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults. 13 Keep your servant from deliberate sins! Don’t let them control me. Then I will be free of guilt and innocent of great sin.

James 1:25 25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.

In fact, obeying God’s commands not only helps us in this life, but it is a way to show love to God. This is not difficult to understand. How many of us feel loved and respected if our children obey us? How about when they constantly disobey us?

John 14:15   15“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

1John 5:2-3  We know we love God’s children if we love God and obey his commandments. Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome.

1 John 2:3-6 And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments. If someone claims, “I know God,” but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth. But those who obey God’s word truly show how completely they love him. That is how we know we are living in him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.

God loved us enough to give us a thorough instruction book for life, the Bible. It records the history of His relationship with His people. It shows us how to relate to Him and to one another. It shows us how to successfully navigate a sin filled world while showing love to one another and to God. Let us show God we are thankful for it by reading and studying the Bible. Let us show God we love Him by obeying His commands!

Spend a few minutes in prayer and reflection over your life right now. What areas is God bringing to your mind that you need to make some adjustments? Do you believe the truth of God’s word in the Bible is still true and relevant? Do you need more time in prayer each day? How about more time studying the Bible instead of shopping or watching sports? After all, we are not inherently good… we only learn what is good from God’s word and not from comparing ourselves to what other people think is good.

Identify a few things you want to work on this week and ask God for help.

Jesus Is Risen!

Jesus is risen! What wonderful news for those of us who submit to Him as Lord of our lives. We do not serve a dead Christ, but a living Christ… one who has overcome death and the grave! Let us rejoice in the glory of God’s plans and trust in Him.

In Matthew 28:1- 15 we experience the resurrection of Christ… the fulfillment of prophecy that Jesus told His disciples before His crucifixion. As we take a few moments to read and celebrate this wonderful event.

Jesus Is Risen!

1Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave. 2And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it. 3And his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. 4The guards shook for fear of him and became like dead men. 5The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. 6“He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying. 7“Go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; and behold, He is going ahead of you into Galilee, there you will see Him; behold, I have told you.”

8And they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy and ran to report it to His disciples. 9And behold, Jesus met them and greeted them. And they came up and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him. 10Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and take word to My brethren to leave for Galilee, and there they will see Me.”

11Now while they were on their way, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests all that had happened. 12And when they had assembled with the elders and consulted together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, 13and said, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came by night and stole Him away while we were asleep.’ 14“And if this should come to the governor’s ears, we will win him over and keep you out of trouble.” 15And they took the money and did as they had been instructed; and this story was widely spread among the Jews, and is to this day.

Let’s break this scripture down and look closely at it to see more detail that God is communicating to us in addition to the bigger message filled with joy that Jesus has risen.

1Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave.

Jesus was crucified on Friday. He died early enough for His body to be put in the grave before Sabbath started Friday at sundown. Then nothing happened until after Sabbath was over on Saturday night at sundown. In fact, the next event occurs on Sunday morning… the first day of the week. God honored the framework of the Sabbath even in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ… as He also did following Creation of the universe when He rested on the seventh day. (Learn more about Sabbath.)

Jesus first reveals Himself after resurrection to women. Considering the context of the culture at the time, this is a strong argument toward the accuracy of the Biblical text. Men writing this scripture or telling the story of resurrection would have a strong tendency to depict men, Jesus’ disciples, as the ones to whom Jesus first revealed Himself if they were just making up this story. As it is, Jesus revealed Himself first to Mary and Mary and the scriptures record it accurately… as they do everything else.

What an amazing site… an angel at once so intimidating that the well trained Roman guards shook for fear and yet the women who loved Jesus could be reassured to calmly converse with him. God’s messenger gave the women instructions and to their credit… they followed at once. He showed them the empty tomb as evidence.

Consider the great joy with which they reacted upon hearing about Jesus. They ran to report it. Jesus met them along the way and they worshipped Him. Once again He had to reassure them not to be afraid and affirmed the instructions from the angel to take word to His disciples.

Each of us should consider… do we act with joy like that? Are we so excited to tell others that our Lord Jesus has risen from the grave that we run? Or do we take it for granted, thinking of it rarely and not letting it move us to share the good news of the gospel with others? Pray that God would help each of us to feel that joy and urgency to share the good news.

Again we see that when confronted with clear evidence of Jesus as Messiah… as the Christ… the chief priests act in the flesh and immediately plot and scheme to cover it up and maintain control through deception. They do not even seek God in prayer for the truth or hold out the possibility that Jesus is the Christ… the Messiah… God Himself in the flesh fulfilling the prophecy of scripture. They are filled with wickedness and led by hardened  hearts.

Even in their wickedness, they could not deny that tomb of Jesus had been opened and that Jesus was no longer there. The evidence was so strong that they could not even claim that it was the wrong tomb or that Jesus was not buried there or that Jesus was still in the tomb. Stronger evidence could not be provided for the fact that the tomb which held Jesus’ body had been opened and Jesus’ body was no longer there.

The best lie they could come up with was that well trained Roman guards were bested by the same disciples of Jesus Christ that ran and hid when they came to arrest Jesus at the garden of Gethsemane. The logic required is impossible to accept. The same disciples who fled when Jesus was alive, are now to be supposed to have confronted Roman guards when they believed Jesus to be dead? Impossible.

We are left then to accept the truth of God’s supernatural intervention by sending an angel to open the tomb and raising Jesus from the dead, as was prophesied by Jesus to His disciples and much earlier by Old Testament prophets of God.

Jesus Christ is risen! He died for our sins and has been raised from the dead. Praise God for His wise plans for redeeming us from our mistakes through His great love for us. May we never take this for granted, but rather may it always be on our hearts with thanksgiving and praise.

Truly I Say To You That One Of You Will Betray Me

We continue with Jesus in the final days of His earthly ministry before crucifixion in Matthew 26:26-35. Earlier in Matthew 26, chief priests are plotting against Jesus, a woman honored Him with expensive perfume, Judas plans to betray Him… the pace of activity is very quick. Jesus knows all of it, including what awaits Him in suffering and dying and being resurrected over the next few days. Still, Jesus focuses on celebrating the Passover, as God has commanded.

The Last Passover

20Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples. 21As they were eating, He said, “Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.” 22Being deeply grieved, they each one began to say to Him, “Surely not I, Lord?” 23And He answered, “He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me. 24“The Son of Man is to go, just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.” 25And Judas, who was betraying Him, said, “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?” Jesus said to him, “You have said it yourself.”

The Lord’s Supper Instituted

26While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” 27And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. 29“But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”

30After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

31Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of Me this night, for it is written, ‘I WILL STRIKE DOWN THE SHEPHERD, AND THE SHEEP OF THE FLOCK SHALL BE SCATTERED.’ 32“But after I have been raised, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 33But Peter said to Him, “Even though all may fall away because of You, I will never fall away.” 34Jesus said to him, “Truly I say to you that this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” 35Peter said to Him, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You.” All the disciples said the same thing too.

First, let us note that Jesus indicates only one will betray Him. Clearly He is indicating Judas as the betrayer. Thus, Peter’s denial is recognized by Jesus as a failure on Peter’s part, but not a betrayal. Judas had intentional plans to betray Jesus for profit. Peter’s heart was true, but his flesh was weak. Give Peter his due… he followed along with Jesus further than the others. It was in doing so that he ultimately denies Jesus. Likewise, the failure of the other disciples to stand with Jesus due to their fear was not counted as betrayal… though it appears they fell short of a perfect standard in their response to Jesus’ being taken into custody by the Romans.

We will also, through our continued reading of Matthew, confirm that Jesus knows what is going to happen before it does. Several examples… Judas’ betrayal, Peter’s denial, and Jesus’ death and resurrection. All these examples continue to point to Jesus as God.

Jesus gives us a symbolic example through which we can remember His death for our sins. The wine and bread, properly considered and presented, can be a powerful reminder of the suffering and sacrifice… of the love of our savior, Jesus Christ. Do not let it become empty repetition with no meaning, but rather prayerfully consider each time you partake, reminding yourself what it represents.

I find it worth noting that Jesus and His disciples sung a hymn before they went to the Mount of Olives. We, too, can honor God in praising Him through song. Music and song can help us connect with God emotionally, in a way that perhaps studying the word of God does not. Both are good and complement one another.

Peter and the other disciples meant well, insisting they would stand with Jesus even unto death, but in the end they were not prepared. This can be very motivating and encouraging for those of us who know that we, too, have failed to stand with Christ at times in our lives. We, like the disciples, can seek forgiveness for our mistakes, and re-dedicate ourselves to God, asking the Holy Spirit for help. Look at what the disciples accomplished despite this early failure… after the Holy Spirit was in them (after the death and resurrection of Christ), they all were willing to boldly proclaim Jesus as Lord despite persecution to the point of death. They spread the good news of the gospel very effectively.

We can do that also if we prepare through Bible study and prayer and submission to Jesus… turning away from our past lives of selfishness and sin. Give your life to Jesus and ask the Holy Spirit to help you. Start (or continue) a bold life of service to Jesus Christ.

Jesus And His Disciples Prepare For Passover

The events leading up to Jesus’ being taken into custody by the Romans to be crucified begin to move rather quickly. We continue in Matthew 26:17-35 following a strong contrast of events in which a woman honored Jesus with an expensive perfume and then Judas sought out the chief priests to betray Jesus.

17Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?” 18And He said, “Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is near; I am to keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.”’” 19The disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.

We take only a few verses of scripture to ensure we do not miss some of the important information God is sharing with us. There is a surprising amount of information in these few verses. We will take them one at a time.

17Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”

The writer of the gospel, which is written after Jesus’ death and resurrection, finds it important to highlight the timing of events by noting the first day of the feast of unleavened bread. Even after the death and resurrection of Christ, this feast is still significant and worth highlighting when documenting the history of events.

Jesus celebrated Passover and His disciples knew it. They came to Him to ask where they should celebrate. Passover was important to Jesus.

The feasts celebrated by God’s people in the Old Testament are often too easily discarded by Christians, who are influenced by the early church history in which men decided they needed to stop celebrating some of these or celebrate differently just to show they are different from the Jewish people. None the less, it is still our God and the history of His relationship with His people that these feasts represent and they were important to Jesus and His disciples. It is still God who commanded His people to celebrate these feasts “as a permanent ordinance”. Permanent does not mean … “until Messiah comes” or “until Messiah rises from the dead”… it means permanent.

Genesis 12:14  14‘Now this day will be a memorial to you, and you shall celebrate it as a feast to the LORD; throughout your generations you are to celebrate it as a permanent ordinance.

The Feast of Unleavened Bread and Passover serve as reminders of God fulfilling His promise and setting His people free from slavery in Egypt. After 400 years of slavery, God’s people would be set free so quickly that the yeast in their breads would not have time to work… resulting in unleavened bread.  Similarly, Passover reminds us of how God’s power ultimately convinced Pharaoh to set free God’s people from bondage… inflicting a severe plague on Egypt, killing their firstborn sons, but passing over those households who publically proclaimed allegiance to God. (For more information on Feast of Unleavened Breads and Passover, refer to Exodus 12.)

18And He said, “Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is near; I am to keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.”’”

We can find more detail in Luke 22:8-13.

8And Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it.” 9They said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare it?” 10And He said to them, “When you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house that he enters. 11“And you shall say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 12“And he will show you a large, furnished upper room; prepare it there.” 13And they left and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.

Jesus demonstrates prophetic detail about he situation to come, time, place, the person carrying water… and even the response the man will give to the request. Jesus knows what each of us are thinking and what decisions we will make to serve or reject Him. There is no doubt He is indeed God!

19The disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.

The disciples followed the directions they received from Jesus. We should all do likewise, even in “small” daily decisions. Things will work out best when we do.

We can pause and reflect that during this whole time, He knew about His betrayal and impending torture and death and resurrection. Jesus did not mope or moan or complain. He did not fall to the ground and hide, feeling sorry for Himself. No! Jesus went about God’s work, even showing us the importance of celebrating God’s feasts, as commanded, even when times are difficult and we suffer loss or hardship. There could not be a better time to focus on God’s power and Lordship over all things!
