God’s Favor and Discipline: The Choice Between Blessing and Cursing

Not all among God’s people carry favor with Him. Many have turned away from Him and His instructions and go their own way.  All the while, they hope God will protect them even while they yet disobey Him. There are times when God Himself comes against His people to discipline them. He offers life or death (Jeremiah 21 verses 8-9 below). He offers blessing or cursing (obedience or disobedience).  More often than we think, we get to choose based on our actions and obedience.

Jeremiah 21

Jeremiah’s Message for Zedekiah

      1The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD when King Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur the son of Malchijah, and Zephaniah the priest, the son of Maaseiah, saying, 2“Please inquire of the LORD on our behalf, for Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon is warring against us; perhaps the LORD will deal with us according to all His wonderful acts, so that the enemy will withdraw from us.”

      3Then Jeremiah said to them, “You shall say to Zedekiah as follows: 4‘Thus says the LORD God of Israel, “Behold, I am about to turn back the weapons of war which are in your hands, with which you are warring against the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans who are besieging you outside the wall; and I will gather them into the center of this city. 5“I Myself will war against you with an outstretched hand and a mighty arm, even in anger and wrath and great indignation. 6“I will also strike down the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast; they will die of a great pestilence. 7“Then afterwards,” declares the LORD, “I will give over Zedekiah king of Judah and his servants and the people, even those who survive in this city from the pestilence, the sword and the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their foes and into the hand of those who seek their lives; and he will strike them down with the edge of the sword. He will not spare them nor have pity nor compassion.”’

      8“You shall also say to this people, ‘Thus says the LORD, “Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death. 9“He who dwells in this city will die by the sword and by famine and by pestilence; but he who goes out and falls away to the Chaldeans who are besieging you will live, and he will have his own life as booty. 10“For I have set My face against this city for harm and not for good,” declares the LORD. “It will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon and he will burn it with fire.”’

      11“Then say to the household of the king of Judah, ‘Hear the word of the LORD,

12O house of David, thus says the LORD:
“Administer justice every morning;
And deliver the person who has been robbed from the power of his oppressor,
That My wrath may not go forth like fire
And burn with none to extinguish it,
Because of the evil of their deeds.

      13“Behold, I am against you, O valley dweller,
O rocky plain,” declares the LORD,
“You men who say, ‘Who will come down against us?
Or who will enter into our habitations?’

      14“But I will punish you according to the results of your deeds,” declares the LORD,
“And I will kindle a fire in its forest
That it may devour all its environs.”’”

It is not enough to just ask God to bless you and protect you while remaining in sin. Truly turn your heart towards Him, repent, and seek Him diligently.

Embracing the Truth: Humility and Teachability in Following Jesus

The Pharisees often struggled to understand the truth of Jesus’ teaching. They already thought they understood everything based on their rules and traditions and their application of God’s laws and commands. They struggled then to understand and accept when Jesus did differently than they expected because they did not have a humble and teachable attitude. They did not recognize and accept Jesus as divine authority with divine understanding of God’s law that was above their own understanding.

We must take a different approach if we are to learn from Jesus rather than cling to our existing man made traditions. We should test everything against the life of Jesus and the whole of scripture.

Mark 2:23-28

Question of the Sabbath

      23And it happened that He was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way along while picking the heads of grain. 24The Pharisees were saying to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” 25And He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions became hungry; 26how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the consecrated bread, which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests, and he also gave it to those who were with him?” 27Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. 28“So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

In today’s scripture, we can observe several key elements from Jesus’ behavior and discussion.

Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Thus, God did not make man just to worship Him on Sabbath for His own pleasure. Rather, God created the Sabbath as a much needed day of rest, prayer, and study of scripture to help man in his life to draw near to God and other people. Sabbath can rest and strengthen us as we go through difficult times and it can encourage us even in good times. It keeps us focused on God.

Not all of God’s commands are equally important in all situations. While we should strive to obey all of them, applied in proper context, there are situations where we need to use good judgment to recognize that we must deviate. One such example is cited by Jesus, Himself regarding David and his men. Another example is demonstrated by Jesus allowing His disciples to pick grain.  As I look to apply in my life, I have encountered situations where I have the opportunity to help someone on a Sabbath… that is good. However, even acts of service and love can interfere in our Sabbath rest and worship if we always schedule them for Sabbath. When practical I try to schedule on other days to keep my Sabbath open. I have to use good judgment to balance the decisions. We shall not be so literal as to miss opportunities to show love to one another and help one another when urgent. (Think about the parable of the good Samaritan. Take the time to help someone in need.)

Jesus clearly takes hold of the claim that He is the “Son of Man” and is “Lord even of the Sabbath”. While this may not be clear to some of us as we read from our culture and time, it is a clear statement that He is one with God. Only God is Lord of the Sabbath. Son of Man refers to the Messiah. Jesus clearly identifies Himself to those listening.

As we continue to try to learn more about the truth of God’s word, let us be careful to show grace to fellow believers in regards to our customs and traditions (e.g. such as around Sabbath). Teach and share truth as Jesus did, without rejecting those who seek to learn it just because they do not yet know it.  Not everyone understands the truth to the same level.

All of us are influenced by the worldly culture that surrounds us… that we grew up in. Sometimes it is hard to separate that out and reject it and turn fully toward God’s path. It certainly requires study and time to uncover the full truth of God’s word. It requires prayer and the help of the Holy Spirit to transform one’s life. Let us show grace to fellow believers who may not fully understand or apply the truth as we do and let us remain humble and teachable so that we can continue to learn more about God’s truth and how to apply it in our lives.

Renewing Our Lives in Christ: Embracing New Cloth and New Wineskins

I have found a variety of interpretations and discussion regarding Jesus’ remarks in Mark 2:21-22.

      21“No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear results. 22“No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.”

Some are confident that this means that we should discard all the Old Testament teaching and law of God and begin again with Jesus Christ. This cannot be the case because Jesus Himself constantly obeys and teaches from the Old Testament scriptures during His earthly ministry. Jesus even clearly stated that He did not come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. He emphasized the importance of keeping and teaching God’s commandments!

Matthew 5:17-19

    17“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18“For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19“Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

So then, let us consider a different meaning for Mark 2:21-22, one that assumes Jesus is correct and consistent in His teaching, which we know Him to be. Let us look at the broader context in Mark 2.

Mark 2:15-21

           15And it happened that He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were dining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following Him. 16When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples, “Why is He eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners?” 17And hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

      18John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and they came and said to Him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” 19And Jesus said to them, “While the bridegroom is with them, the attendants of the bridegroom cannot fast, can they? So long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. 20“But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day.

As we study the broader context we see the Pharisees just clearly do not understand the differences in Jesus and His disciples compared to their own behaviors and attitudes. Let us consider that the Pharisees are called out by Jesus and John the Baptist and the disciples throughout the gospels as living in a way that was not representative of the commands of God. They had a wrong understanding and wrong application of the direction God had given His people.

Matthew 23:1-3

  1Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples, 2saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses; 3therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them.

Before we get to hard on them, recognize that we all come from a wrong starting place when we first come to know and decide to follow Jesus. All of us start from a place filled with error in how we are living… our attitudes and behaviors. This is why we need to repent and turn to God as a foundational principle in following Jesus.

As I reflect on Jesus’ response to them in Mark 2:21-22, it seems to me that Jesus is reminding them that they can not take in new revelation of truth (such as “Jesus is Messiah”) and just “patch” it on to their old way of living, which was not consistent with God’s instructions on how they should be living. Each of us must put down the old wineskin of our attitudes and behaviors, our world view before knowing Jesus, and pick up a new one that represents Jesus’ world view. We must not cling to the habits and customs that we had before, as they will not be compatible with changing our lives to truly follow Christ.

We must begin again with new cloth, with new wineskin, if we are to fully follow Christ in all that He teaches. All the while we can remember that what Jesus teaches is the same as what the Father instructed and commanded His people to do. It is not a new truth or teaching. It is not a change in policy by God. It is a change in our understanding and application of the truth that always existed and is recorded throughout the whole of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation.

Will You Answer Jesus’ Call Enthusiastically?

Jesus often calls upon those we least expect. As we read through the gospels, we see clearly that Jesus did not pick only those perceived to be most holy or perfect already. He chose people who were humble and teachable and knew that they were sinners. He chose as His inner circle those that were willing to put God first above the concerns of the world such as even family and business. He chose and discipled those answered His call with enthusiasm.

As we each seek to hear from God in our lives today, we should prepare ourselves to answer His call enthusiastically, as Matthew did and others who followed Jesus during His earthly ministry.

Beyond His inner circle, Jesus was also comfortable reaching out to sinners as a doctor reaches out to those who are sick. He did not make close friends with those who refused to repent from their sin, but He did reach out to them. Because of His approach, many were and are saved.

Mark 2:14-17

Levi (Matthew) Called

      14As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting in the tax booth, and He said to him, “Follow Me!” And he got up and followed Him.

      15And it happened that He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were dining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following Him. 16When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples, “Why is He eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners?” 17And hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Let us challenge ourselves to follow the example of Jesus in reaching out to sinners and showing them love and telling them the truth of the gospel. We must never “water down” the truth so as to make people comfortable in their unrepentant sin, but we must bring the truth to them… and that may lead us at times to places we would not normally choose to go to visit people we would not normally spend time with.

I pray that  God would strengthen me in this area for bold outreach and help me to do so more effectively for the glory of His kingdom. I encourage you to pray similarly and then to look for opportunities to reach out to those who do not yet know and believe in Jesus as Messiah.

Look for ways to support new believers as they respond to God’s call, even if they have a sinful past. Strive to remember that we all come from sinful pasts and none of us are worthy of forgiveness except through the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.

Jesus: Messiah, Savior, and the Way to Reconciliation

I have encountered some that declare Jesus was just a good teacher and not God. Some say a prophet. Some insist that Jesus never even really said He was God. The sum total of scripture from Genesis through Revelation points to Jesus as Messiah. It is amazing that any can claim He is a prophet or good teacher, but not God. The fact is that Jesus also had very explicit examples recorded in scripture where He communicates that He and the Father are one… that He is God.

Perhaps one of the most obvious is in John 10.

John 10:24-30

24The Jews then gathered around Him, and were saying to Him, “How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.” 25Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me. 26“But you do not believe because you are not of My sheep. 27“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29“My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30“I and the Father are one.”

There are other similar scriptures where Jesus could not be more plain and direct in this manner. There are also multiple examples where He communicates it in a more subtle, but still clear manner.

Mark 2:1-13

The Paralytic Healed

      1When He had come back to Capernaum several days afterward, it was heard that He was at home. 2And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room, not even near the door; and He was speaking the word to them. 3And they came, bringing to Him a paralytic, carried by four men. 4Being unable to get to Him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above Him; and when they had dug an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic was lying. 5And Jesus seeing their faith said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” 6But some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, 7“Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8Immediately Jesus, aware in His spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, said to them, “Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts? 9“Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven’; or to say, ‘Get up, and pick up your pallet and walk’? 10“But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the paralytic, 11“I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet and go home.” 12And he got up and immediately picked up the pallet and went out in the sight of everyone, so that they were all amazed and were glorifying God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this.”

      13And He went out again by the seashore; and all the people were coming to Him, and He was teaching them.

Jesus clearly chose to talk about forgiving sins to communicate that He was one with God, because only God has authority to forgive sins.

For those of us who read the scriptures objectively and without bias, seeking truth, we must conclude that Jesus was not a good teacher or prophet. He was either a madman, a liar, or God in the flesh. Those are our choices.

For those of us who read and understand the scriptures, we know that Jesus is Messiah, who took the punishment for our sins and died on the cross for us. Through Him, we can be reconciled to God.

  • Admit that we are sinners in need of salvation.
  • Believe that Jesus died for us and rose again.
  • Confess with our mouths and our lives that Jesus is our Lord. Repent (turn away from our sins) and live according to God’s instructions.

Those Who Seek Jesus Diligently Will Find Him

What a beautiful and inspiring event it must have been. Jesus had healed many and then gone on to other towns to preach the gospel. When He returned to Capernaum several days later, crowds were eager to see Him and hear what He had to say. The miracles of healing that Jesus performed truly got people’s attention to listen to the gospel… exactly as Jesus intended.

As the crowds gathered to hear Him, a small group of friends wanted to bring a paralyzed man to Jesus to be healed. They could not get in. What were they to do? Should they give up? Should they wait outside and hope He comes to them?

Mark 2:1-13

The Paralytic Healed

      13And He went out again by the seashore; and all the people were coming to Him, and He was teaching them.

The friends did not whine or complain or blame Jesus or the other people for being in their way. They did not declare “It’s not fair”. They had such faith in Jesus that they worked harder to get close to Him. When they did, He was pleased and rewarded them with the healing they sought. The diligent exercise of the faithful was rewarded.

Enduring Faith: Trials and Persecution in the Service of the LORD

When we choose to serve the LORD, we are not guaranteed an easy life. In fact, many who are used mightily by the LORD experience trials and persecution. They must endure. We may often think of  “Bible” heroes as always being joyful even in challenging times, like Paul and Silas singing in jail. However, the men and women in the Bible were people, just like you and me. They struggled at times as well when things did not go well in the carnal view of what was around them.

Jeremiah is a great example. He felt that he had to speak the word of God, but when he did he felt humiliation and persecution. People came against him.

Jeremiah 20

Pashhur Persecutes Jeremiah

      1When Pashhur the priest, the son of Immer, who was chief officer in the house of the LORD, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things, 2Pashhur had Jeremiah the prophet beaten and put him in the stocks that were at the upper Benjamin Gate, which was by the house of the LORD. 3On the next day, when Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “Pashhur is not the name the LORD has called you, but rather Magor-missabib. 4“For thus says the LORD, ‘Behold, I am going to make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends; and while your eyes look on, they will fall by the sword of their enemies. So I will give over all Judah to the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will carry them away as exiles to Babylon and will slay them with the sword. 5‘I will also give over all the wealth of this city, all its produce and all its costly things; even all the treasures of the kings of Judah I will give over to the hand of their enemies, and they will plunder them, take them away and bring them to Babylon. 6‘And you, Pashhur, and all who live in your house will go into captivity; and you will enter Babylon, and there you will die and there you will be buried, you and all your friends to whom you have falsely prophesied.’”

Jeremiah’s Complaint

7O LORD, You have deceived me and I was deceived;
You have overcome me and prevailed.
I have become a laughingstock all day long;
Everyone mocks me.

      8For each time I speak, I cry aloud;
I proclaim violence and destruction,
Because for me the word of the LORD has resulted
In reproach and derision all day long.

      9But if I say, “I will not remember Him
Or speak anymore in His name,”
Then in my heart it becomes like a burning fire
Shut up in my bones;
And I am weary of holding it in,
And I cannot endure it.

      10For I have heard the whispering of many,
“Terror on every side!
Denounce him; yes, let us denounce him!”
All my trusted friends,
Watching for my fall, say:
“Perhaps he will be deceived, so that we may prevail against him
And take our revenge on him.”

      11But the LORD is with me like a dread champion;
Therefore my persecutors will stumble and not prevail.
They will be utterly ashamed, because they have failed,
With an everlasting disgrace that will not be forgotten.

      12Yet, O LORD of hosts, You who test the righteous,
Who see the mind and the heart;
Let me see Your vengeance on them;
For to You I have set forth my cause.

      13Sing to the LORD, praise the LORD!
For He has delivered the soul of the needy one
From the hand of evildoers.

      14Cursed be the day when I was born;
Let the day not be blessed when my mother bore me!

      15Cursed be the man who brought the news
To my father, saying,
“A baby boy has been born to you!”
And made him very happy.

      16But let that man be like the cities
Which the LORD overthrew without relenting,
And let him hear an outcry in the morning
And a shout of alarm at noon;

      17Because he did not kill me before birth,
So that my mother would have been my grave,
And her womb ever pregnant.

      18Why did I ever come forth from the womb
To look on trouble and sorrow,
So that my days have been spent in shame?

Like Jeremiah, we can come before the LORD and share our feelings honestly. He knows them anyway. I am reminded of 1 Pet 5:7, “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” We can give our anxiety to God in order to find peace.

Just remember to praise God along the way!

The Broken Jar: The Consequences of Forsaking God’s Path

God shared an important message with His people through Jeremiah in Jeremiah 19. It was not an encouraging message, but a warning and an indication of the punishment to come because God’s people had turned from Him to other gods and other ways of living.  It is not hard to imagine God sharing this same message with His people around the world today. Many who proclaim Jesus are not living according to how God calls us to live. They look more like the culture of the world than like the example of our Messiah or His teaching on how we should live.

Pay attention. Apply this to your own life and pray for God’s people to repent.

      1Thus says the LORD, “Go and buy a potter’s earthenware jar, and take some of the elders of the people and some of the senior priests. 2“Then go out to the valley of Ben-hinnom, which is by the entrance of the potsherd gate, and proclaim there the words that I tell you, 3and say, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, “Behold I am about to bring a calamity upon this place, at which the ears of everyone that hears of it will tingle. 4“Because they have forsaken Me and have made this an alien place and have burned sacrifices in it to other gods, that neither they nor their forefathers nor the kings of Judah had ever known, and because they have filled this place with the blood of the innocent 5and have built the high places of Baal to burn their sons in the fire as burnt offerings to Baal, a thing which I never commanded or spoke of, nor did it ever enter My mind; 6therefore, behold, days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when this place will no longer be called Topheth or the valley of Ben-hinnom, but rather the valley of Slaughter. 7“I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place, and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies and by the hand of those who seek their life; and I will give over their carcasses as food for the birds of the sky and the beasts of the earth. 8“I will also make this city a desolation and an object of hissing; everyone who passes by it will be astonished and hiss because of all its disasters. 9“I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they will eat one another’s flesh in the siege and in the distress with which their enemies and those who seek their life will distress them.”’

      10“Then you are to break the jar in the sight of the men who accompany you 11and say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, “Just so will I break this people and this city, even as one breaks a potter’s vessel, which cannot again be repaired; and they will bury in Topheth because there is no other place for burial. 12“This is how I will treat this place and its inhabitants,” declares the LORD, “so as to make this city like Topheth. 13“The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be defiled like the place Topheth, because of all the houses on whose rooftops they burned sacrifices to all the heavenly host and poured out drink offerings to other gods.”’”

      14Then Jeremiah came from Topheth, where the LORD had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the court of the LORD’S house and said to all the people: 15“Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Behold, I am about to bring on this city and all its towns the entire calamity that I have declared against it, because they have stiffened their necks so as not to heed My words.’”

Take a few minutes to pray and give God thanks for His word. Thank Him that it can shine a light for us on how we need to live still today. Praise Him for who He is and ask Him to show you what changes you should make in your life to live more according to His ways and less blending with the culture around you. We should stand out as a holy people and not blend in.

Uncontainable Joy: Proclaiming the Power of Jesus

Those who truly know the power of Jesus can hardly contain themselves from telling others. They proclaim it joyfully and boldly. We should be careful not to get so comfortable in our walk with Him that we become complacent in living our lives and not proclaiming Him to others. Take note how it is often new believers, or those who truly were lost or ill and have been physically saved as well as spiritually saved that have an uncontainable enthusiasm about Jesus. Mark 1 provides a great example… even though Jesus instructed him not to tell others, the man could not contain his joy and amazement. He proclaimed Jesus joyfully everywhere he went. Many heard and came to seek Jesus.

Mark 1:40-45

    40And a leper came to Jesus, beseeching Him and falling on his knees before Him, and saying, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” 41Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.” 42Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed. 43And He sternly warned him and immediately sent him away, 44and He said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” 45But he went out and began to proclaim it freely and to spread the news around, to such an extent that Jesus could no longer publicly enter a city, but stayed out in unpopulated areas; and they were coming to Him from everywhere.

We could have an interesting discussion on why Jesus asked this man not to tell others, but none the less, let us take time to understand what joy and thankfulness filled this man after being healed. He could not contain himself.

Prayerfully reflect on your own life. Do you still have that enthusiasm that the man did in Mark 1? Do you tell others everywhere you go? Do you tell anyone whom you meet that is not already in church or close to you? If you did tell others, is your life different in such a way as to reflect that you follow Jesus?

Let us pray that God would help us to proclaim Him boldly and never loose our enthusiasm to tell others how our lives have been changed because of Jesus. Let us change our lives to reflect love and obedience in following Jesus. Let us be a light to those who do not yet know Him!

Yeshua: The Source of Truth Amidst False Prophets and Cultural Norms

To put it simply, Yeshua is different from other teachers. He is different from the established religion that is taught in many churches or synagogues.  He has authority. He has the ability to work miracles. Immediately upon beginning to teach, people recognized He was no ordinary teacher. That is because Jesus was God in the flesh who came to dwell among us.

Mark 1:21-28

      21They went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and began to teach. 22They were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. 23Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, 24saying, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” 25And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” 26Throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him. 27They were all amazed, so that they debated among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” 28Immediately the news about Him spread everywhere into all the surrounding district of Galilee.

Yeshua still has power and authority that others do not. Those who follow Him should teach boldly and with authority as well, though with a certain amount of humility. There is only one way and Yeshua is it. We should expect the fellowship of true believers to reflect their leader. When congregations or communities lift up Yeshua as their leader we should be able to see that they are different than other communities in the world. We should expect them to NOT conform to the cultural norms but to God’s word.

Many false prophets will try to fake miracles and try to teach as if they have authority, even though they teach false doctrine. We must study the scriptures ourselves daily and test teachers (you should test me also!) against scripture. We are only to follow those who teach the truth about Yeshua, consistent with what scripture teaches. Do not follow teachers just because they have a lot of people in their building every week or a lot of followers on Facebook.

As we look for whom we should follow, let us make sure it is Yeshua and not a “celebrity” pastor. We should follow the example of Yeshua and study scripture. We should seek truth and live by it even when it is in conflict with what an established church may teach. We should help pastors by holding them accountable to God’s word, even when it is unpopular. Of course we can study and learn from many different pastors, but none should be looked upon as the source of knowledge and all must be recognized to be capable of error. Let us do these things respectfully and with grace and humility.

Yeshua is most definitely different from the world. So, too, we should expect our church fellowship to be different as well. Let us choose wisely our church family and teachers. Let us seek many counselors and teachers and test everything against the word of God. Let us humbly seek God’s help in prayer for this important matter.
