Follow God’s Agenda Rather Than Your Own

Many who start out serving God passionately come to a point where they get caught up in their own success and their own plans and, without even realizing it, become less sensitive to listening to and obeying the Spirit as He guides them in their ministry. We do well to remember that we are called to follow God’s agenda rather than our own… and even those who seem to be very good at following God can at times be distracted and led by their own desires or plans, especially when their ministry is successful, and they grow in confidence in themselves.

Paul was without a doubt a very faithful servant of Christ. He was experiencing much success in his missionary journeys and surely faced the same temptations and distractions of many successful pastors and evangelists today. Paul had a desire to speak the word in Asia but was prevented by the Spirit from doing so. We do not get much information in scripture as to the details, but once Paul received the guidance from the Spirit and a vision from God, he changed his plans and obeyed, trusting God rather than his own plans. We should do the same.

Acts 16:6-13

      6They passed through the Phrygian and Galatian region, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia; 7and after they came to Mysia, they were trying to go into Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them; 8and passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas. 9A vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing and appealing to him, and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10When he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

      11So putting out to sea from Troas, we ran a straight course to Samothrace, and on the day following to Neapolis; 12and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia, a Roman colony; and we were staying in this city for some days. 13And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to a riverside, where we were supposing that there would be a place of prayer; and we sat down and began speaking to the women who had assembled.

Take some time to evaluate your own life. Are there things you feel God has directed you to do, but you have not yet done them because they are different than the plans you developed? If you want to hear from God consistently, obey the things you feel He is leading you to do. How many of us would continue to provide guidance to someone who never listens to what we tell them?

Do you feel that your plans are being defeated over and over again… prayerfully consider if God is blocking you from particular choices or activities in an effort to re-direct your path.

Always verify what you think you hear from God by testing it against what God reveals in the Bible. God will not contradict Himself.

Yes, God does still speak to His people and in many different ways. Sometimes He is subtle and we will not hear Him unless we are still and quiet and patient in listening for Him, believing He will answer.

1 Kings 19:11-13

     11So He said, “Go forth and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD was passing by! And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12After the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing. 13When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, a voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

God’s Grace Is Not an Excuse to Ignore His Law

Have you ever felt confused about the relevance of the Old Testament, the commands of God, and what they mean to us today? Many followers of Christ will reach a point in their walk with Him when they will have to decide if they continue to just accept the traditions of men, which have been handed down through family and church, or if they will study the Bible to learn for themselves what it actually does and does not say. There can at times be a thoughtful debate amongst believers about how to apply the commands of God from the Old Testament now that Christ has come and died for us and risen again. We will read later from Acts 15 and see that this is a discussion that has been going on for thousands of years.

We know we are forgiven by grace through faith, and not by works or properly performing religious ceremonies or obeying God’s commands perfectly.

Ephesians 2:8  8For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

However, this is often misunderstood to mean that we can (or even should) completely disregard the laws of God and just rely solely on grace for salvation. Is that right? Absolutely not.

Romans 6:15-16  15What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be! 16Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?

We are called by God to obedience. He calls us to obey His commands. It is one way we show love to Him. Are we really only concerned about doing the bare minimum to be saved? or do we actually commit to serving and showing love to Jesus as evidence we have submitted to Him and have genuine, wholehearted faith in Him?

John 14:15  15“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

John 14:23-24   23Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. 24“He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.

Jesus actually goes so far as to say in verse 24 above that “He who does not love Me does not keep My words;” When we refuse to obey God, even if to rely on the grace He offers, we are demonstrating that we do not love Him.

It is also important to keep in mind that Jesus, Himself, clearly stated that He did not come to change the law. He emphasized that whoever annuls even the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:17-19    17“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18“For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19“Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. I did not come to abolish the law

These are strong words… and very clear when you read it directly from God’s word in scripture. It is important to have this teaching of Christ clear in our minds when we read scriptures such as Acts 15 so as to avoid falling into the trap of misinterpretation. If we come in predisposed to disregarding God’s laws, we may convince ourselves we are right. Many read it and conclude that Peter just claimed that there is no need to obey any of God’s laws anymore, but this is not accurate. Careful reading reveals that the discussion is about being saved, not what is the best way to show love to God and live our lives.

Acts 15:1-12

The Council at Jerusalem

      1Some men came down from Judea and began teaching the brethren, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” 2And when Paul and Barnabas had great dissension and debate with them, the brethren determined that Paul and Barnabas and some others of them should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders concerning this issue. 3Therefore, being sent on their way by the church, they were passing through both Phoenicia and Samaria, describing in detail the conversion of the Gentiles, and were bringing great joy to all the brethren. 4When they arrived at Jerusalem, they were received by the church and the apostles and the elders, and they reported all that God had done with them. 5But some of the sect of the Pharisees who had believed stood up, saying, “It is necessary to circumcise them and to direct them to observe the Law of Moses.”

      6The apostles and the elders came together to look into this matter. 7After there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “Brethren, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles would hear the word of the gospel and believe. 8“And God, who knows the heart, testified to them giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He also did to us; 9and He made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith. 10“Now therefore why do you put God to the test by placing upon the neck of the disciples a yoke which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? 11“But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they also are.”

      12All the people kept silent, and they were listening to Barnabas and Paul as they were relating what signs and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles.

The key point of the discussion is actually salvation. As we discussed above, salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus. We do not have to accomplish other works or rituals to receive it. However, when we love Jesus and truly submit our lives to Him, we will obey His commands… as Paul did, as the disciples did, and as Jesus did. If we love Him, why would we not trust Him and obey Him?

Beware How Easily We Stray from God’s Ways

We see this trend throughout human history among Yahweh’s people. They fall away from Him, a remnant survives, He calls them back together, they repent and return to His ways… for a while. Then they cycle starts over again. Sometimes the intervals vary in terms of how much time before the people go astray. Often the repentance and falling away are tied to the influence of a king or leader. The people seldom seem to stay on the right path without a strong leader. We should keep our guard up. We are subject to the same human nature. If we lose focus, we will drift away from God and blend with the ways of others. When we are talking about the elements of worshipping and following God in His way, blending with anything else is not good.

In Nehemiah, we see the elapsed time is about 12 years from Nehemiah 10, where Israel sealed the covenant around 444 BC, and Nehemiah 13, where Nehemiah returns to restore the law around 432 B.C. (For more on Bible timelines, consider this resource on BibleHub.com… Bible Timeline (biblehub.com))

Nehemiah 13

Foreigners Excluded

      1On that day they read aloud from the book of Moses in the hearing of the people; and there was found written in it that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever enter the assembly of God, 2because they did not meet the sons of Israel with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them to curse them. However, our God turned the curse into a blessing. 3So when they heard the law, they excluded all foreigners from Israel.

Tobiah Expelled and the Temple Cleansed

      4Now prior to this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, being related to Tobiah, 5had prepared a large room for him, where formerly they put the grain offerings, the frankincense, the utensils and the tithes of grain, wine and oil prescribed for the Levites, the singers and the gatekeepers, and the contributions for the priests. 6But during all this time I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I had gone to the king. After some time, however, I asked leave from the king, 7and I came to Jerusalem and learned about the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, by preparing a room for him in the courts of the house of God. 8It was very displeasing to me, so I threw all of Tobiah’s household goods out of the room. 9Then I gave an order and they cleansed the rooms; and I returned there the utensils of the house of God with the grain offerings and the frankincense.

Tithes Restored

      10I also discovered that the portions of the Levites had not been given them, so that the Levites and the singers who performed the service had gone away, each to his own field. 11So I reprimanded the officials and said, “Why is the house of God forsaken?” Then I gathered them together and restored them to their posts. 12All Judah then brought the tithe of the grain, wine and oil into the storehouses. 13In charge of the storehouses I appointed Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, and in addition to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were considered reliable, and it was their task to distribute to their kinsmen. 14Remember me for this, O my God, and do not blot out my loyal deeds which I have performed for the house of my God and its services.

Sabbath Restored

      15In those days I saw in Judah some who were treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sacks of grain and loading them on donkeys, as well as wine, grapes, figs and all kinds of loads, and they brought them into Jerusalem on the sabbath day. So I admonished them on the day they sold food. 16Also men of Tyre were living there who imported fish and all kinds of merchandise, and sold them to the sons of Judah on the sabbath, even in Jerusalem. 17Then I reprimanded the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this evil thing you are doing, by profaning the sabbath day? 18“Did not your fathers do the same, so that our God brought on us and on this city all this trouble? Yet you are adding to the wrath on Israel by profaning the sabbath.”

      19It came about that just as it grew dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut and that they should not open them until after the sabbath. Then I stationed some of my servants at the gates so that no load would enter on the sabbath day. 20Once or twice the traders and merchants of every kind of merchandise spent the night outside Jerusalem. 21Then I warned them and said to them, “Why do you spend the night in front of the wall? If you do so again, I will use force against you.” From that time on they did not come on the sabbath. 22And I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves and come as gatekeepers to sanctify the sabbath day. For this also remember me, O my God, and have compassion on me according to the greatness of Your lovingkindness.

Mixed Marriages Forbidden

      23In those days I also saw that the Jews had married women from Ashdod, Ammon and Moab. 24As for their children, half spoke in the language of Ashdod, and none of them was able to speak the language of Judah, but the language of his own people. 25So I contended with them and cursed them and struck some of them and pulled out their hair, and made them swear by God, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take of their daughters for your sons or for yourselves. 26“Did not Solomon king of Israel sin regarding these things? Yet among the many nations there was no king like him, and he was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel; nevertheless the foreign women caused even him to sin. 27“Do we then hear about you that you have committed all this great evil by acting unfaithfully against our God by marrying foreign women?” 28Even one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was a son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite, so I drove him away from me. 29Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.

      30Thus I purified them from everything foreign and appointed duties for the priests and the Levites, each in his task, 31and I arranged for the supply of wood at appointed times and for the first fruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.

This scripture can serve as a vivid reminder as to how quickly we can be corrupted and led away from God’s ways. To be sure, our culture today is far from many of the ways of God. Normally, when I say this, many Christians agree and consider I am talking about those who are really turning from God or reject Him entirely. That is certainly true, but like the Bible, I am focusing on God’s people. The statement still applies across the church. It is not limited just to those churches that have continued to evolve and change away from God’s word while still calling upon His name. Some of this is obvious with issues like abortion or gay marriage, because it has changed in a quick time period and directly contradicts the word of God.

However, many more elements of how we live have been corrupted over time. To name a few:

  • celebrating pagan holidays like Easter and Christmas
  • not celebrating God’s appointed times like Passover and Tabernacles
  • not observing Sabbath as a day of rest (e.g. such as avoiding commerce/business)
  •  observing Sabbath on Sunday instead of the 7th day as it is commanded and as Yeshua did and Yah’s people throughout the Biblical history
  • not observing the dietary instructions laid out in God’s word

I could go on.  Each of the topics above have strong Biblical arguments that we have strayed from God’s ways incorrectly. It happened over time and long ago. Roman emperor drove the Jews out of Jerusalem and turned the church over to the Gentiles. There was intentional blending of God’s ways with that of Roman gods to manipulate the people and run the kingdom. There was later a history of the Catholic church blending with pagan celebrations and traditions to assimilate people rather than remaining set apart and holding to a rigid standard based on God’s word.

This is often hard to hear and many want to reject it, but take care not to decide what God wants based on how your culture is living and what they are accepting. Do not base your understanding of God’s ways only on “my pastor said” or “my family tradition is”. You see God’s people getting off track all the time in scripture on this basis. In the example with Nehemiah today, it took 12 years or less!

Be on guard! Seek out the truth of God’s word and be willing to test everything against scripture. I am sure a lot of folks did not want to hear Nehemiah’s message. It was disruptive and uncomfortable. It brought people back closer to Yah’s ways!

Father, please raise up strong, righteous leaders like Nehemiah. Stir the people to listen and follow their lead to return to Your ways. Help each of us be willing to challenge what we have grown to accept in regard to living Your way. Open our eyes and our hearts to be willing to seek and study and turn from things which may even be dear to us, but are not Your ways. Thank You for Your written word and for the Spirit. Let the Spirit guide us in our understanding but help us to test based on the written scripture. Amen.

Repent and Return to the Ways of Yahweh with Grief and Joy

Ezra was priest and scribe. Nehemiah became governor. The LORD used them both individually and together to lead the people of Judah back to His ways and to restore Jerusalem. It is fun to watch as the LORD brings all the right “chess pieces” into the right place at the right time to accomplish His will.  The books of Nehemiah and Ezra are great examples of this as a whole. We see examples of the LORD guiding individual leaders among His people, prompting the people at large to take action, and even using Persian kings.

The people who returned from exile had to re-learn a lot about Yahweh’s instructions. The temple had been destroyed.  They had been in exile for generations in a pagan land. When they came together to read the law given to Moses, they treated it with great respect and were truly grieved as they heard it, recognizing how they had not been living according to God’s ways. The law was explained to them. They worshipped Yahweh. It was a powerful moment in history for their reconciliation with Yahweh as His people.

They turned it into great celebration and helped one another by sharing food with those who had not prepared any.

Nehemiah 8:1-12

Ezra Reads the Law

      1And all the people gathered as one man at the square which was in front of the Water Gate, and they asked Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses which the LORD had given to Israel. 2Then Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly of men, women and all who could listen with understanding, on the first day of the seventh month. 3He read from it before the square which was in front of the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of men and women, those who could understand; and all the people were attentive to the book of the law. 4Ezra the scribe stood at a wooden podium which they had made for the purpose. And beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah on his right hand; and Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah and Meshullam on his left hand. 5Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. 6Then Ezra blessed the LORD the great God. And all the people answered, “Amen, Amen!” while lifting up their hands; then they bowed low and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground. 7Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, the Levites, explained the law to the people while the people remained in their place. 8They read from the book, from the law of God, translating to give the sense so that they understood the reading.

“This Day Is Holy”

      9Then Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, “This day is holy to the LORD your God; do not mourn or weep.” For all the people were weeping when they heard the words of the law. 10Then he said to them, “Go, eat of the fat, drink of the sweet, and send portions to him who has nothing prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” 11So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still, for the day is holy; do not be grieved.” 12All the people went away to eat, to drink, to send portions and to celebrate a great festival, because they understood the words which had been made known to them.

This is a great example of a people returning to the LORD. They go back to the scriptures and teach and learn them together as a community. They are grieved for how they have been living, but then celebrate that now they are learning and understanding the law correctly. They are together as a community.

Our society, even Christians at large, very much need to turn away from relying on the teachings and customs of men and really dive back into the scriptures in detail and challenge ourselves to leave behind what is not of God and embrace what the word instructs us to do. There are many wrong teachings mingled in with the church today. It is very much like we are living in exile in a pagan land. Much common teaching among Christians has the ways of man mixed and mingled with the truth of God’s word.

Each of us as individuals likely needs to consider if we need to make a similar journey to really test our understanding and common teaching about God’s word. We need to turn away from the things that He does not want us to do and leave those behind. We should celebrate and embrace change as a return to His ways. We should try to do so with others.

Father, please raise up leaders like Ezra and Nehemiah from among the spiritual leaders and government leaders that rule our land. Help rally Your people around them and around each other. Help us be hungry to challenge and test the teachings we have accepted as Yours against Your holy scriptures. Bring about unity in a community of believers seeking You wholeheartedly across our cities, states, and nation… across the world. Amen.

By What Standard Was Yeshua Judged Righteous?

Most of us that identify as Christians or Messianic Jews would readily accept and recognize that Yeshua was without sin according to scripture. It is a core tenant of our faith. It was through His sacrifice as one without blemish, without sin, that we who sin are forgiven.

2 Corinthians 5:21

21He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

We should then ask ourselves, “By what standard was Yeshua judged sinless, and by what same standard then are we sinners?” It would make sense for us to know the standard by which Yeshua and we are judged so that we may try to follow it more closely, even if we will never get to “sinless” in our own actions and attitudes.

Righteousness refers to behavior that is morally justifiable and right. It is God who sets the standards for righteousness, not man. The standards are laid out in His law and through scripture. It is by this standard that Yeshua was judged righteous, by perfect adherence to the law of God.  (Got Questions – What is Righteousness?)

Ultimately, we are unable to do as Yeshua in keeping the law perfectly. We sin. We fall short. We can be forgiven and judged righteous through accepting Yeshua as our Lord and savior. We repent from our sins and try to follow His example and God’s standards as best we can. He is our example.

I find it very unusual then, how many Christians take advantage of the grace of God and declare the law of God to be no more. They declare that Yeshua observed it perfectly, so we don’t have to! But does that really mean that God has changed the standard of righteousness? or just that He extends grace as we strive for it and fall short?

It should seem fairly obvious. Any time a parent is teaching a child, or a skilled craftsman is teaching an apprentice… the answer is the same. I show you the right way to do it and then you try to do it that way. Never does it make sense that because the teacher did it correctly and took time to show us how to do it correctly, really they meant that we should ignore it and do as we please because they love us.  It makes no sense.

Should we break the law and sin on purpose and rely on grace? Paul had strong words for this question.

Romans 6:1-7

   1What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? 2May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? 3Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7for he who has died is freed from sin.

The simple answer is that we should not just go our own way because we can be forgiven through Christ. In fact, one might even question if we have this attitude, do we really love and submit to Yeshua in the way needed to receive forgiveness.

Matthew 5:17-19 (Yeshua speaking)

17“Do not presume that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill. 18For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke of a letter shall pass from the Law, until all is accomplished! 19Therefore, whoever nullifies one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Paul makes emphatically the point that we should not sin freely to rely on grace.  Yeshua sets us free from bondage to sin, not bondage to the law of God! The law of God is not bondage, it is freedom! (Read more – Is God’s Law a Burden?)

The conclusion of the matter is that the law of God is still our standard for righteousness and we are to obey it rather than traditions and teachings of men. When we fall short, the grace of God is there to catch us and make us righteous through Yeshua. We should strive to understand and follow the full law of God and not make it a menu from which we choose what we will follow and what we will not. Father, please help Your people to return to Your instructions and turn from the ways of men, even those taught in churches that are not correct. Please open the eyes of the spiritually blind and help all of us to see more clearly how You want us to live! None of us have it right! Thank You for grace and mercy. Count It Blessing to Be Persecuted for Yeshua?

Observe the world around us. Take note of how people respond to the message of Yeshua when true believers share it boldly and without apology. Many believe and are saved, coming to true relationship with our Messiah. Many others, however, become embittered and stir up trouble to persecute those who follow Yeshua.

Acts 14:1-8

Acceptance and Opposition

      1In Iconium they entered the synagogue of the Jews together, and spoke in such a manner that a large number of people believed, both of Jews and of Greeks. 2But the Jews who disbelieved stirred up the minds of the Gentiles and embittered them against the brethren. 3Therefore they spent a long time there speaking boldly with reliance upon the Lord, who was testifying to the word of His grace, granting that signs and wonders be done by their hands. 4But the people of the city were divided; and some sided with the Jews, and some with the apostles. 5And when an attempt was made by both the Gentiles and the Jews with their rulers, to mistreat and to stone them, 6they became aware of it and fled to the cities of Lycaonia, Lystra and Derbe, and the surrounding region; 7and there they continued to preach the gospel.

Why is it that so many that reject Yeshua become bitter toward those who submit to Him? They do not want to change their lives to submit to Christ. They desire to remain doing things their own way. They feel the need to stop those who disagree with them. Truthfully, it is also often a spiritual battle raging between Satan and the people of God. (Read more on spiritual warfare.)

John 3:19-21

19“This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. 20“For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21“But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”

There is no good reason to hate followers of Yeshua. Those that truly follow Christ actually are respectful and considerate to all… showing love to all. But the part that many cannot take is that we, as followers of Christ, are also to rebuke and correct wrong behavior as wrong. We are not to accept it and condone it or make excuses for it. Following Christ and loving others drives us to point out the destructive behaviors to try to help not only ourselves but others as well. Knowing that non-believers are going to Hell for eternity drives us to want to save them from that fate… and only faith in Jesus Christ can do that. There is no other way. So we proclaim Jesus boldly.

John 14:6

 6Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

People often do not want to accept correction. Only the wise accept rebuke and grow wiser. Fools reject it and remain in their folly… and get angry with the one who tries to help them. As Christians we can become more effective sharing the gospel by paying attention to those we want to reach. Those willing and open to receive the message may be ready to accept Jesus. Sometimes they must first be spiritually broken and realize they are missing something… then we can tell them it is Jesus they are missing. Those who are scoffers and mockers, still unwilling to admit they are not sufficient by themselves, are not ready to receive Christ and will just hate you for it.

Proverbs 9:8-9

  8Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you,
Reprove a wise man and he will love you.

  9Give instruction to a wise man and he will be still wiser,
Teach a righteous man and he will increase his learning.

However, we are commanded by Yeshua and driven by genuine love for others to boldly proclaim the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ to those that do not know it. We must not allow ourselves to be discouraged that some will come against us when we share the gospel, but rather remember that others will be saved!  Be encouraged by the words of our Lord Jesus and count it blessing when you are persecuted for standing with Christ.

Matthew 5:10-12

 10“Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11“Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 12“Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Continue to share the truth of the good news of Jesus boldly. Look for those who are willing to hear and listen, but do not be discouraged that others will come against you. Always live in the example of Christ so that we can be a light to others, even when they do not want to see.

Father, help Your people to stand boldly and proclaim the truth about You and the truth about the one way we are to come into proper relationship with You, through Messiah and forgiveness of our sins based on His death and resurrection. Please help Your people stand up to those who would come against them personally or collectively. Please raise up righteous leaders to unite us in following You the right way. Bring about a global restoration and return to Your ways among Your people. Help us fellowship in unity with those who truly follow You and Your ways. Amen.

Marriage Can Draw Us Near or Drive Us Apart from Our Father

Ezra 10 can be a troubling chapter for many to read and digest. It wrestles with a very challenging situation. Yahweh told His people not to intermarry with others that had been in the promised land before he delivered it to them. There were good reasons as He knew intermarrying with these pagans would compromise and blend the way His people were living so that it would no longer be focused solely on His ways and relationship with Him. It would lead to separation between the people and their God.

After the exiles returned to Jerusalem, there were quite a few who intermarried with the people there. This came to the surface before Ezra, and we see a collective recognition that this was wrong and needs to be addressed. Ultimately it is addressed by those who intermarried “putting away” their wives. This is where the conflict comes up for most of us and we will explore some scripture below. Once married, and some with children, it is hard for us today to conclude that putting away the wives is the right solution. At least for that specific situation, the scriptures present it as an acceptable or appropriate answer. We are left to reconcile and reflect on that, hopefully to ultimately draw us nearer to the LORD.

For all of this, however, remember there was specific command not to intermarry in this specific situation. There is also a general principle that intermarrying with people of different spiritual beliefs or faiths is not acceptable.

Ezra 10

Reconciliation with God

      1Now while Ezra was praying and making confession, weeping and prostrating himself before the house of God, a very large assembly, men, women and children, gathered to him from Israel; for the people wept bitterly. 2Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, said to Ezra, “We have been unfaithful to our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land; yet now there is hope for Israel in spite of this. 3“So now let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law. 4“Arise! For this matter is your responsibility, but we will be with you; be courageous and act.”

      5Then Ezra rose and made the leading priests, the Levites and all Israel, take oath that they would do according to this proposal; so they took the oath. 6Then Ezra rose from before the house of God and went into the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib. Although he went there, he did not eat bread nor drink water, for he was mourning over the unfaithfulness of the exiles. 7They made a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the exiles, that they should assemble at Jerusalem, 8and that whoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the leaders and the elders, all his possessions should be forfeited and he himself excluded from the assembly of the exiles.

      9So all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled at Jerusalem within the three days. It was the ninth month on the twentieth of the month, and all the people sat in the open square before the house of God, trembling because of this matter and the heavy rain. 10Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have been unfaithful and have married foreign wives adding to the guilt of Israel. 11“Now therefore, make confession to the LORD God of your fathers and do His will; and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives.” 12Then all the assembly replied with a loud voice, “That’s right! As you have said, so it is our duty to do. 13“But there are many people; it is the rainy season and we are not able to stand in the open. Nor can the task be done in one or two days, for we have transgressed greatly in this matter. 14“Let our leaders represent the whole assembly and let all those in our cities who have married foreign wives come at appointed times, together with the elders and judges of each city, until the fierce anger of our God on account of this matter is turned away from us.” 15Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah opposed this, with Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite supporting them.

      16But the exiles did so. And Ezra the priest selected men who were heads of fathers’ households for each of their father’s households, all of them by name. So they convened on the first day of the tenth month to investigate the matter. 17They finished investigating all the men who had married foreign wives by the first day of the first month.

List of Offenders

      18Among the sons of the priests who had married foreign wives were found of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib and Gedaliah. 19They pledged to put away their wives, and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their offense. 20Of the sons of Immer there were Hanani and Zebadiah; 21and of the sons of Harim: Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel and Uzziah; 22and of the sons of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad and Elasah.

      23Of Levites there were Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (that is, Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah and Eliezer.

      24Of the singers there was Eliashib; and of the gatekeepers: Shallum, Telem and Uri.

      25Of Israel, of the sons of Parosh there were Ramiah, Izziah, Malchijah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malchijah and Benaiah; 26and of the sons of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth and Elijah; 27and of the sons of Zattu: Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad and Aziza; 28and of the sons of Bebai: Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai and Athlai; 29and of the sons of Bani: Meshullam, Malluch and Adaiah, Jashub, Sheal and Jeremoth; 30and of the sons of Pahath-moab: Adna, Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, Binnui and Manasseh; 31and of the sons of Harim: Eliezer, Isshijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Shimeon, 32Benjamin, Malluch and Shemariah; 33of the sons of Hashum: Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh and Shimei; 34of the sons of Bani: Maadai, Amram, Uel, 35Benaiah, Bedeiah, Cheluhi, 36Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib, 37Mattaniah, Mattenai, Jaasu, 38Bani, Binnui, Shimei, 39Shelemiah, Nathan, Adaiah, 40Machnadebai, Shashai, Sharai, 41Azarel, Shelemiah, Shemariah, 42Shallum, Amariah and Joseph. 43Of the sons of Nebo there were Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, Joel and Benaiah. 44All these had married foreign wives, and some of them had wives by whom they had children.

There are some clear themes. Put Yahweh first. Obey His commandments, and it is really important to do so. If you are in disobedience to His instructions, even in something very dear or important to you, turn back to His ways and repent. There should be nothing more precious to you than Yahweh. We have strength when we come together as a community to address sin that is pervasive in our culture. We are to be fully submitted to Yahweh. Not only should our own sin weigh heavy on us if we do not repent, but also the sin of our community or nation as well. This is harder when essentially living in exile within a nation that by and large is clearly not committed to living according to God’s ways. I would emphasize again that this issue of marriage highlighted here is not an absolute about marrying someone from another geography or nation or skin color. It has to do with intermarrying against God’s command with the specific group of pagans who inhabited the promised land and whose worship and faith were in conflict with the commands of Yahweh.

I do not try to claim that how the people responded in Ezra 10 is the absolute answer to marriages today where we find ourselves divided in our faith. There is clearly a warning not to intermarry with someone of a different faith. However, if that has already happened, or if one spouse comes to Yahweh through Yeshua after marriage, we find ourselves in a different situation. Paul speaks to this in 2 Corinthians.

2 Corinthians 6:14-17

    14Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? 15Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?

16Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said,
“I WILL DWELL IN THEM AND WALK AMONG THEM;
AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE.

      17“Therefore, COME OUT FROM THEIR MIDST AND BE SEPARATE,” says the Lord.
“AND DO NOT TOUCH WHAT IS UNCLEAN;
And I will welcome you.

1 Corinthians 7:10-16

    10But to the married I give instructions, not I, but the Lord, that the wife should not leave her husband 11(but if she does leave, she must remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband), and that the husband should not divorce his wife.

      12But to the rest I say, not the Lord, that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he must not divorce her. 13And a woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he consents to live with her, she must not send her husband away. 14For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her believing husband; for otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are holy. 15Yet if the unbelieving one leaves, let him leave; the brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace. 16For how do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife?

There is a bit of an important twist in differentiating in verses 10 and 12 what instruction is from God and what is from Paul. There is a difference, of course.

Deuteronomy 7:1-6

1“When the LORD your God brings you into the land where you are entering to take possession of it, and He drives away many nations from before you, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than you, 2and when the LORD your God turns them over to you and you defeat them, you shall utterly destroy them. You shall not make a covenant with them nor be gracious to them. 3Furthermore, you shall not intermarry with them: you shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor shall you take their daughters for your sons. 4For they will turn your sons away from following Me, and they will serve other gods; then the anger of the LORD will be kindled against you and He will quickly destroy you. 5But this is what you shall do to them: you shall tear down their altars, smash their memorial stones, cut their Asherim to pieces, and burn their carved images in the fire. 6For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His personal possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

Clearly there is a lot to digest here. Take time to consider it and reflect on it. Even if you can’t get full clarity on all of it, remember the core principles highlighted above to help avoid getting into this type of difficult situation. Seek the LORD for wisdom for any specific situation you may be experiencing. Seek wise and godly counsel as well.

Father, I pray You would lead Your people in holiness in regards to marriage. Unite Your people that they would draw near to one another and stand together. Let us remain distinct and apart from others around us who do not know or follow You. Please help us so that our daughters and sons are not led away from You through marriage, but rather strengthened through marriage in their pursuit of Your ways and a relationship with You. Amen.

What Does God Say about Mixed Marriages?

For starters, let us ensure we are all aligned on the context in scripture. A mixed marriage is not based on appearance or what many define today as “race”. Truly, we are one race of humans, made in the image of God. We are not separated by what many today call “black” or “white”. That is not how God sees us, nor how we should see one another, any more than we would divide over who has blonde or brown hair. Rather, appreciate the variety God has created!

A mixed marriage in the context of scripture is one that involves God’s people marrying someone from a culture or nation that does not live in accordance with the instructions and law of God. More specifically, there was direct instruction not to intermarry with the inhabitants of the promised land as it would lead God’s people away from Him as they blend with other faiths and practices. With that in mind, you can probably see where this is going.

Ezra 9

Mixed Marriages

      1Now when these things had been completed, the princes approached me, saying, “The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, according to their abominations, those of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians and the Amorites. 2“For they have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy race has intermingled with the peoples of the lands; indeed, the hands of the princes and the rulers have been foremost in this unfaithfulness.” 3When I heard about this matter, I tore my garment and my robe, and pulled some of the hair from my head and my beard, and sat down appalled. 4Then everyone who trembled at the words of the God of Israel on account of the unfaithfulness of the exiles gathered to me, and I sat appalled until the evening offering.

Prayer of Confession

      5But at the evening offering I arose from my humiliation, even with my garment and my robe torn, and I fell on my knees and stretched out my hands to the LORD my God; 6and I said, “O my God, I am ashamed and embarrassed to lift up my face to You, my God, for our iniquities have risen above our heads and our guilt has grown even to the heavens. 7“Since the days of our fathers to this day we have been in great guilt, and on account of our iniquities we, our kings and our priests have been given into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity and to plunder and to open shame, as it is this day. 8“But now for a brief moment grace has been shown from the LORD our God, to leave us an escaped remnant and to give us a peg in His holy place, that our God may enlighten our eyes and grant us a little reviving in our bondage. 9“For we are slaves; yet in our bondage our God has not forsaken us, but has extended lovingkindness to us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us reviving to raise up the house of our God, to restore its ruins and to give us a wall in Judah and Jerusalem.

      10“Now, our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken Your commandments, 11which You have commanded by Your servants the prophets, saying, ‘The land which you are entering to possess is an unclean land with the uncleanness of the peoples of the lands, with their abominations which have filled it from end to end and with their impurity. 12‘So now do not give your daughters to their sons nor take their daughters to your sons, and never seek their peace or their prosperity, that you may be strong and eat the good things of the land and leave it as an inheritance to your sons forever.’ 13“After all that has come upon us for our evil deeds and our great guilt, since You our God have requited us less than our iniquities deserve, and have given us an escaped remnant as this, 14shall we again break Your commandments and intermarry with the peoples who commit these abominations? Would You not be angry with us to the point of destruction, until there is no remnant nor any who escape? 15“O LORD God of Israel, You are righteous, for we have been left an escaped remnant, as it is this day; behold, we are before You in our guilt, for no one can stand before You because of this.”

Clearly, the LORD is against His people marrying someone who has beliefs and traditions and ways of living that conflict with His ways, His instructions, His traditions.  Further, it is not because He is harsh or wants to make life difficult, but rather the opposite. He warns us to avoid something that will clearly create division between us and Him. He wants to help us stay near to Him. Consider carefully what someone holds as their core beliefs when considering marriage, even among those who claim to follow Messiah, but may blend many practices or traditions that Messiah Himself did not and would not practice.  One example that comes to mind is Solomon, who drifted from God and blended with other pagan practices and worship through the influence of his many pagan wives and concubines.

It is also interesting to observe that Ezra interceded with God on behalf of the people of Israel. He was not just concerned with his own actions. Most of us today do not do this enough.

I invite you to pray with me:

Father, thank You for leaders like Ezra, who cry out to You on behalf of all Your people. Thank You for raising up righteous leaders who will help lead us to You. Please bring more workers to the harvest to bring about restoration and revival among Your people. Help us gather together in unity and support one another. Help us intercede for one another. Have mercy on us as sinners. Help us turn about and repent to return to Your ways. Give us as Your people wisdom in regards to marriage. Amen.

The Key to Ezra’s Success as He Pursued Restoration

The LORD continued to provide for and support the efforts of those whom He had chosen to come back and rebuild the temple and Jerusalem.  You can, of course, catch up on the earlier parts of Ezra we have been reading if you missed the background. God stirred up the heart of King Cyrus and people of Judah to return and provided resources and support from the king to help them on their way. They faced opposition, but ultimately overcame and worked to restore the temple and implemented Passover again. They wanted to draw near in relationship to God according to His instruction.

We have also been discussing a parallel between the return to Jerusalem and our own personal return to relationship with the LORD. As we seek to draw near to Him, we often need Him to stir our spirit and draw us to Him. We, then, need to obey. It is through His power and blessing that we, individually or as a group, truly return to Him.  He can make a way where none seems possible.

As we continue in Ezra 7, we read about Yahweh again putting His hand upon a key player, this time Ezra, and working to bring more people and resources back to Jerusalem. He is restoring more people to relationship with Him according to His ways. It is not because of the cleverness or greatness of Ezra, though he deserves credit for obeying.  The key to Ezra’s success may be summarized that he was acting in the will of God and not for his own agenda as he pursued the restoration of God’s ways. He had the hand of blessing on Him from God as a result.

Ezra 7

Ezra Journeys from Babylon to Jerusalem

      1Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, there went up Ezra son of Seraiah, son of Azariah, son of Hilkiah, 2son of Shallum, son of Zadok, son of Ahitub, 3son of Amariah, son of Azariah, son of Meraioth, 4son of Zerahiah, son of Uzzi, son of Bukki, 5son of Abishua, son of Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the chief priest. 6This Ezra went up from Babylon, and he was a scribe skilled in the law of Moses, which the LORD God of Israel had given; and the king granted him all he requested because the hand of the LORD his God was upon him. 7Some of the sons of Israel and some of the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers and the temple servants went up to Jerusalem in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes.

      8He came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king. 9For on the first of the first month he began to go up from Babylon; and on the first of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, because the good hand of his God was upon him. 10For Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the LORD and to practice it, and to teach His statutes and ordinances in Israel.

King’s Decree on Behalf of Ezra

      11Now this is the copy of the decree which King Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the priest, the scribe, learned in the words of the commandments of the LORD and His statutes to Israel: 12“Artaxerxes, king of kings, to Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, perfect peace. And now 13I have issued a decree that any of the people of Israel and their priests and the Levites in my kingdom who are willing to go to Jerusalem, may go with you. 14“Forasmuch as you are sent by the king and his seven counselors to inquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem according to the law of your God which is in your hand, 15and to bring the silver and gold, which the king and his counselors have freely offered to the God of Israel, whose dwelling is in Jerusalem, 16with all the silver and gold which you find in the whole province of Babylon, along with the freewill offering of the people and of the priests, who offered willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem; 17with this money, therefore, you shall diligently buy bulls, rams and lambs, with their grain offerings and their drink offerings and offer them on the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem. 18“Whatever seems good to you and to your brothers to do with the rest of the silver and gold, you may do according to the will of your God. 19“Also the utensils which are given to you for the service of the house of your God, deliver in full before the God of Jerusalem. 20“The rest of the needs for the house of your God, for which you may have occasion to provide, provide for it from the royal treasury.

      21“I, even I, King Artaxerxes, issue a decree to all the treasurers who are in the provinces beyond the River, that whatever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, may require of you, it shall be done diligently, 22even up to 100 talents of silver, 100 kors of wheat, 100 baths of wine, 100 baths of oil, and salt as needed. 23“Whatever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be done with zeal for the house of the God of heaven, so that there will not be wrath against the kingdom of the king and his sons. 24“We also inform you that it is not allowed to impose tax, tribute or toll on any of the priests, Levites, singers, doorkeepers, Nethinim or servants of this house of God.

      25“You, Ezra, according to the wisdom of your God which is in your hand, appoint magistrates and judges that they may judge all the people who are in the province beyond the River, even all those who know the laws of your God; and you may teach anyone who is ignorant of them. 26“Whoever will not observe the law of your God and the law of the king, let judgment be executed upon him strictly, whether for death or for banishment or for confiscation of goods or for imprisonment.”

The King’s Kindness

      27Blessed be the LORD, the God of our fathers, who has put such a thing as this in the king’s heart, to adorn the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem, 28and has extended lovingkindness to me before the king and his counselors and before all the king’s mighty princes. Thus I was strengthened according to the hand of the LORD my God upon me, and I gathered leading men from Israel to go up with me.

It is within the LORD’s power to stir the spirit of those who are not His and those who are His people. He can make a way for His people to be drawn together again where once they were dispersed. He can make a way for us to rediscover the law of God where once it was largely lost. He can make a way to restore us to His holy appointed times where many had forgotten or drifted away. Praise and glory and honor be to Yahweh! There is no other like Him.

If you are feeling distant to Him or wanting simply to draw nearer, reach out to Him. Pray. Study. Worship. Call upon Him and ask Him to bring you back to Him and to others who seek Him diligently. Even if you do not feel distant personally, take a few minutes to pray to ask the LORD to restore and grow the fellowship of more followers that would truly be willing to leave behind the traditions of men and return from Babylon (metaphorically) to rediscover the law of God and pursue it passionately with others who do likewise. Ask Yahweh to raise up more leaders like Ezra who will help to act out His will and lead the people to restoration and fellowship… a return to proper relationship with God according to His ways.

Get Back About Restoring Your Relationship with God

The LORD once again restarted the rebuilding of the temple that had been stopped by adversaries convincing the king of Persia to order the building halted. They did not receive permission from the king, but rather from God Himself, through HIs prophets. They took courage and resumed, knowing there were adversaries in the land who would come against them and knowing they were vulnerable to the king of Persia should he look at their actions unfavorably. They took courage and proceeded with God’s work, even when the might of the rulers could come against them.

Ezra 5

Temple Work Resumed

      1When the prophets, Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, who was over them, 2then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak arose and began to rebuild the house of God which is in Jerusalem; and the prophets of God were with them supporting them.

      3At that time Tattenai, the governor of the province beyond the River, and Shethar-bozenai and their colleagues came to them and spoke to them thus, “Who issued you a decree to rebuild this temple and to finish this structure?” 4Then we told them accordingly what the names of the men were who were reconstructing this building. 5But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, and they did not stop them until a report could come to Darius, and then a written reply be returned concerning it.

Adversaries Write to Darius

      6This is the copy of the letter which Tattenai, the governor of the province beyond the River, and Shethar-bozenai and his colleagues the officials, who were beyond the River, sent to Darius the king. 7They sent a report to him in which it was written thus: “To Darius the king, all peace. 8“Let it be known to the king that we have gone to the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is being built with huge stones, and beams are being laid in the walls; and this work is going on with great care and is succeeding in their hands. 9“Then we asked those elders and said to them thus, ‘Who issued you a decree to rebuild this temple and to finish this structure?’ 10“We also asked them their names so as to inform you, and that we might write down the names of the men who were at their head. 11“Thus they answered us, saying, ‘We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth and are rebuilding the temple that was built many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and finished. 12‘But because our fathers had provoked the God of heaven to wrath, He gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this temple and deported the people to Babylon. 13‘However, in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, King Cyrus issued a decree to rebuild this house of God. 14‘Also the gold and silver utensils of the house of God which Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, and brought them to the temple of Babylon, these King Cyrus took from the temple of Babylon and they were given to one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had appointed governor. 15‘He said to him, “Take these utensils, go and deposit them in the temple in Jerusalem and let the house of God be rebuilt in its place.” 16‘Then that Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of the house of God in Jerusalem; and from then until now it has been under construction and it is not yet completed.’ 17“Now if it pleases the king, let a search be conducted in the king’s treasure house, which is there in Babylon, if it be that a decree was issued by King Cyrus to rebuild this house of God at Jerusalem; and let the king send to us his decision concerning this matter.”

This is not just an interesting chapter in history. This is insight into how we, as followers of Yeshua, should act. Yes, we can be mindful of the government. However, there are times when God will call us to obey Him over the misguided direction of the government. I can think of the recent years of restrictive policy around concern for an illness. It affected many countries, but in particular the US is what I am most familiar with. There were states that would allow gambling establishments and sports arenas to be crowded, but then insist that churches could not be opened for public health concerns. This was nonsense and quite a few pastors and congregations took a stand, to their credit. They were going to fight for their right to worship and gather in Jesus’ name.

Prayerfully reflect on what this may mean for you in your life. What are some things where you may need to stand up for God, even if some leaders in government or business or the community are standing against you? Ask the Spirit to lead you.

As a parting thought, don’t think of Ezra only as the Jews rebuilding the temple. Instead, think of it as God’s people restoring proper relationship with Him according to His ways! This is so totally relevant to us today as many of us seek to do the same thing in the midst of much false teaching that pervades society in general, but even many churches. Get back to restoring your relationship with God according to His instruction! Do not let adversaries stop you!

Father, please help Your people to stand firm and have courage to do what You call us to do, even when we face opposition. Raise up strong, god-fearing leaders who will unite us as Your people and have positive influence over communities and government. Protect us from our adversaries, who truly are Your adversaries. Raise up the righteous and defeat the wicked and worldly who would stop Your people from living as You call us to. Amen.
