What Job We Do Is Not Who We Are

I find it is very common for people to identify who they are with what job they do. In particular for men, but also for women,  it seems that much of their identity can get wrapped up in what job they do. So much so that it is common when meeting someone for the first time to ask “Who do you work for?” or “What job do you do?”

While it is understandable that our work does reflect something about us, because of how much of our lives are spent working, there is so much more to someone than just what job they do.

If I were meeting Abraham today, and asked him those questions I may only learn that he was a shepherd. I would be missing out on finding out about his close relationship with Jehovah!

What if I asked David about his job when he was a shepherd and again years later when he was a king? Was he a different person because of the job he had? No. He was a man after God’s own heart as a shepherd boy and still as a king. I would miss out on getting to know David and his relationship with Jehovah if I only ask what job he does.

I recently found myself in a group of Christian men, who genuinely seem to love and want to serve Jehovah. I met them for the first time. It seemed every time I met someone in the group, I was drawn back into talking about my job, when I would much rather have discussed family or what God is doing in my life or my ministry hear at Hearing From Jesus. My job is how I earn money, but it is not who I am.

This is certainly not a big deal, but I felt that I missed out on the opportunity to get to know these men a bit more meaningfully by missing the chance to actually talk about Jehovah or family at a Christian men’s gathering.

As I reflect, I think I am going to challenge myself to hold a slightly different focus when I meet folks in the future, even if they are asking me about my job. I want to engage them with an open ended lead in such as “Tell me about yourself.” That way they can tell me about their job or hobby if that is what they want to discuss, or about their walk with Christ or their family if they prefer. A simple adjustment may help open up more meaningful discussion even from the starting gate as come to meet someone.

So The Lord Changed His Mind?

To some it will be surprising and to others it is obvious. Jehovah does indeed listen to His people and at times is willing to be influenced by them to change His mind. This does not mean that God is surprised by some new information He did not know… this is not the case. God is all knowing. It simply confirms that He loves His people and cares for them. In particular, those who are obedient and faithful will draw near to Him and have a closer relationship with Him.

Moses had a very close relationship with God. One of the clearest examples of someone successfully interceding on behalf of others and influencing God to change His mind is documented in Exodus 32. The people rebelled against God’s instruction and He was considering destroying them and starting over. Moses intervenes on their behalf to influence God’s decision.

Exodus 32:1-18

The Golden Calf

      1Now when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people assembled about Aaron and said to him, “Come, make us a god who will go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.” 2Aaron said to them, “Tear off the gold rings which are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” 3Then all the people tore off the gold rings which were in their ears and brought them to Aaron. 4He took this from their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool and made it into a molten calf; and they said, “This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.” 5Now when Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to the LORD.” 6So the next day they rose early and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.

      7Then the LORD spoke to Moses, “Go down at once, for your people, whom you brought up from the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves. 8“They have quickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them. They have made for themselves a molten calf, and have worshiped it and have sacrificed to it and said, ‘This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt!’” 9The LORD said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and behold, they are an obstinate people. 10“Now then let Me alone, that My anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them; and I will make of you a great nation.”

Moses’ Entreaty

      11Then Moses entreated the LORD his God, and said, “O LORD, why does Your anger burn against Your people whom You have brought out from the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12“Why should the Egyptians speak, saying, ‘With evil intent He brought them out to kill them in the mountains and to destroy them from the face of the earth’? Turn from Your burning anger and change Your mind about doing harm to Your people. 13“Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants to whom You swore by Yourself, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heavens, and all this land of which I have spoken I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’” 14So the LORD changed His mind about the harm which He said He would do to His people.

      15Then Moses turned and went down from the mountain with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, tablets which were written on both sides; they were written on one side and the other. 16The tablets were God’s work, and the writing was God’s writing engraved on the tablets. 17Now when Joshua heard the sound of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is a sound of war in the camp.”

18But he said,
“It is not the sound of the cry of triumph,
Nor is it the sound of the cry of defeat;
But the sound of singing I hear.”

Moses makes three arguments starting in verse 11, and none of them have anything to do with “the people deserve another chance”, because they did not. The first argument appeals to God in regards to why He would want to destroy the people He just brought out of Egypt with such demonstration of God’s mighty hand and great power.  The second argument points not to the people but to how the situation glorifies, or would not glorify, God. Moses directly asks God to change His mind.  The third argument points back to God’s fulfilling of His promises.

In all three arguments, Moses points to how the situation reflects on God and His glory and purpose rather than the perceived needs of individuals or groups of people. I think we all do well to remember these principles as we come before God to ask Him for help or intercession on someone’s behalf. It is not that God does not love or care for His people, He does. Rather the kind of attitude and perspective Moses had really showed a lot of personal maturity and showed that he was focused on God’s plans rather than his own desires. This focus is particularly common amongst those who truly follow and care for God and His glory above their own.  Those are the individuals that may have the most potential to call upon our Father for consideration when there are difficult situations.

Put Your Faith In Jehovah Rather Than Your Religious Leaders

Jehovah tells us to put our faith in him rather than men, even when men may be righteous and in leadership roles. Now that is not to say we should not be respectful and honor those in leadership over us, we should. However, men fail or even when they do not fail, we may lose sight of them. Eventually they die. If our faith is in men, then we will surely have our faith tested and fail. If our faith is in Jehovah, He will never fail us.

Consider the Israelites, who were led out of slavery in Egypt by God through Moses.

Exodus 32:1-18

The people put their faith in Moses rather than God! Thus when he was out of sight for awhile, they grew nervous and failed in their faith very quickly.

    1Now when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people assembled about Aaron and said to him, “Come, make us a god who will go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”

The people had not learned to trust in God directly, but relied on having an intermediary, a go-between, to communicate between God and man. Moses was even righteous… he did not fail in this case, but still the people were separated from him and their faith failed. When it did, they acted boldly in rebellion to God’s instructions by creating and worshipping an idol. They worshipped God the way they saw Egyptians worshipping their gods. They had not drawn near to God, but rather relied on Moses to do so on their behalf.

God invites each of us to draw near to Him in personal relationship and to put our faith in Him and Him alone. Let us each accept this generous invitation from the Creator of all things and put our faith where it belongs!

Love The Father, Not The World

It is a very natural instinct to want to blend in, to avoid drawing too much attention from those around us as being “different”. This approach seems on the surface to make life easier, to help gain more friends, to avoid negative attention and conflict. We must be careful to train ourselves and our children (for parents reading this) so that we become comfortable being different for the right reasons. We are called to be a light and shine to show others the glory of God so that they may also be saved. We are told by Jesus not to hide the light… not to blend in. To be effective disciples of Christ, we must be ready to live with conflict from others who love the world instead of God.

Matthew 5:14-16

    14“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16“Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

We are instructed multiple times throughout the Bible to not be conformed to the world… to instead renew our mind and live in such a way as to glorify God and live His way.

Romans 12:2

2And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

We must caution ourselves not to get too attached to the things of the world, so that they do not draw us away from God Himself. As a simple example, if we love money, Satan and our inherent selfish nature will struggle with whether we serve money or God in our actions. Our love of the world may draw us away from God or just keep us from growing closer to Him.

1 John 2:15-17

  15Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.

To be effective disciples of Christ, we must recognize that much of the world will hate us, as it hates Jesus. The world loves its own. We are not greater than Jesus, and thus we can expect people to come against us. We should prepare to be in conflict if we are to stand for Christ.

John 15:18-25

  18“If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. 19“If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you. 20“Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21“But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know the One who sent Me. 22“If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23“He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24“If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have both seen and hated Me and My Father as well. 25“But they have done this to fulfill the word that is written in their Law, ‘THEY HATED ME WITHOUT A CAUSE.’

How then, do we act in order to serve God in this manner? Let us continue from one of the verses above in Matthew 5.

Matthew 5:14-19

  14“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16“Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

      17“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18“For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19“Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

To let our light shine, we follow after Christ and what He taught. We live by the commandments which God has given us and teach others to do the same. We live according to God’s instruction rather than that of the world.

“You Shall Surely Observe My Sabbaths”

Many argue today that Sabbath is obsolete and no longer relevant. However, to abolish the Sabbath is to ignore not only what Jehovah commanded, but also to reject Jesus’ example of how we should live and His teaching, which constantly pointed back to the prophets and law of Moses as authority and instruction from the Father.

Matthew 23:1-3

  1Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples, 2saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses; 3therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them.

At first, this scripture is not entirely clear, until you understand that when the Pharisees sat in the chair of Moses, they read only the scriptures, such as the law from God given through Moses. Jesus clearly distinguishes the law of Moses, which is to be followed, from the actual behavior of the Pharisees, which is tangled up with man made laws and traditions that distract from or contradict the law of God given through Moses.

Jesus even clearly stated that He did not come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. He emphasized the importance of keeping and teaching God’s commandments!

Matthew 5:17-19

    17“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18“For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19“Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Our Father speaks many times definitively about the Sabbath. One such time is in Exodus 31.

 Exodus 31:11-18

The Sign of the Sabbath

      12The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 13“But as for you, speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘You shall surely observe My sabbaths; for this is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the LORD who sanctifies you. 14‘Therefore you are to observe the sabbath, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. 15‘For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day there is a sabbath of complete rest, holy to the LORD; whoever does any work on the sabbath day shall surely be put to death. 16‘So the sons of Israel shall observe the sabbath, to celebrate the sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant.’ 17“It is a sign between Me and the sons of Israel forever; for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, but on the seventh day He ceased from labor, and was refreshed.”

      18When He had finished speaking with him upon Mount Sinai, He gave Moses the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written by the finger of God.

The Sabbath is a sign between the Father and His people, that we may know that He is the Lord who sanctifies us. The Sabbath is holy, that is to say that it is set aside for the purposes of Jehovah. As evidence from the punishment commanded by the Father, He was serious and this is an important matter. It should not be discarded.

We can have a good discussion on how reconciliation for sin has changed, not in its core principles, but in its administration. We no longer go through an earthly priesthood for forgiveness of sin but rather through Jesus Christ. With new administration of Christ, the punishments laid out in this scripture no longer apply. However, the purpose and principle of Sabbath have not changed. The Father set forth this example even from the beginning after creating everything.

We should remind ourselves further, that the Sabbath rest is for us… for man. Why should we discard it?

Mark 2:27

27Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.

My personal experience with observing the Sabbath has been great. At first, for even a month or two, it felt awkward and even left me frustrated at times that I did not have the day to do my work or chores. However, as I adapted my behavior and that of my family to obey scripture and continued on that path it started to change. Now I found I had time to spend resting and with my wife and children that I had not had before… because there is always some chore that can be done. I have more time available to spend with God. The day is already set aside, every week. My children look forward to it and generally are very joyful when Sabbath comes because they know it means a day of rest and quality time with Dad.

Seek prayerfully for the Father to confirm for you the importance of observing the Sabbath. I encourage any of you who observe the Sabbath to continue… well done! Others, who may not observe Sabbath at this time… try it. Just start observing Sabbath and continue for at least a month. It takes a bit of getting used to but is powerful in providing us the rest and time with God and family that we need to live the way the Father desires.

Abortion, Forgive Others / Seek Forgiveness, Repenting from Sin

Stop the Lies. Save the Children.

Today we are highlighting a serious issue which has become all too common in our society and across the world today. Abortion. The brutal murder of unborn children. Before we get too far into the topic, let us take a moment to recognize that some have already made this mistake or helped someone else to do so. Jesus Christ can forgive all our sins when we approach Him humbly and with repentant spirit. Many children are murdered daily across the world, and in most cases, it really boils down to simply the convenience of the mother. It is an act of ultimate selfishness and lack of accountability for one’s actions. Many adults allow themselves to be deceived about this act as if somehow it were acceptable because the world embraces it. It is a lie from Satan himself… just like he deceived Eve in the garden.
“Is the baby growing inside you really alive?”
The answer is a resounding “YES, it is alive! It is a separate life from the mother.” God finds it detestable to kill the innocent, even before they are born.
It is amazing today how many use excuses such as “women’s health” or lies like “it’s a woman’s body” as excuses for supporting the murder of innocent unborn babies. They defy all logic and science, not to mention God’s instruction, in denying that these unborn babies are indeed alive and human.
Right away, let’s shatter one of those lies. The baby’s body is not the same as the mother’s body. It is not the “woman’s body”. It is a separate body within her… a separate person. Pretending it is ok to kill the baby inside the mom but not outside the mom after it is born is to say that it becomes a human life with value only based on where it is located. If one makes the case based on the baby’s ability to survive on its own outside the mom, then baby’s at birth will also not be protected. How old do children really need to be to care for themselves? Some older than others, but certainly none are able at birth. That is why God designed reproduction to be in the confines of marriage where two parents, a man and a woman, can take care of the child.
Let’s touch on the second… “women’s health”? Really? As an excuse to kill a baby? How does killing the baby inside a mom help the mother’s health? It is only in very rare situations where that there may be concern for the mother’s life. Even in these situations, however, let us pause and consider more carefully. If two lives are in danger, do we typically just choose to kill one? or do we try to save both if at all possible? Conceptually it is not that different than a doctor or hospital staff having to decide which person needs help most urgently in the emergency room after a major accident with multiple serious injuries. They do not just decide to kill one to save others… they evaluate the situation and make the best decisions they can to save as many as they can. What if a mother is stressed and ill after a baby is born and taking care of the baby would make it harder for her to get well? Would anyone defend killing the child in the name of helping the mother’s health? Of course not! That is absurd.
How big a problem is abortion? Huge. By numbers, much bigger than the ruthless extermination of the Jewish people during World War II by Hitler. According to the World Health Organization, every year an estimated 45 million children are killed inside their mother’s womb by someone carrying out an abortion.  

God clearly tells us life begins in the womb in Jeremiah 1:4-5

      4Now the word of the LORD came to me saying,

      5“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
And before you were born I consecrated you;
I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

And again in Psalms 139:13-16

      13For You formed my inward parts;
You wove me in my mother’s womb.

      14I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well.

      15My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth;

      16Your eyes have seen my unformed substance;
And in Your book were all written
The days that were ordained for me,
When as yet there was not one of them.

Medical science today undeniably confirms what God told us thousands of years ago. Birth begins at conception and the human life grows inside the mother’s womb. We can watch the baby breath and move and monitor heartbeat while he or she is still inside the womb. The baby is defenseless and without a voice, but clearly a separate individual human life inside the mother.

If you or someone you know is considering abortion.  Please choose to save the life of the child, even if it is a hard situation. Reach out for help from God and fellow Christians.

Similarly if you or someone you know has already been involved in an abortion then you know how devastating it is emotionally for the mother. Remember that God is filled with grace.  He can forgive you if you turn toward Him with repentant heart and seek forgiveness. If you are struggling in grief, please reach out to God and to fellow Christians for help.

It draws attention to the evil of abortion through the use of a three-point program including: prayer and fasting, constant vigil, and community outreach
  • SilentNoMoreAwareness.org  is a Campaign whereby Christians make the public aware of the devastation abortion brings to women and men. The campaign seeks to expose and heal the secrecy and silence surrounding the emotional and physical pain of abortion.
  • DoveChristianCounseling.com provides online, email, or phone counseling to help those who have been involved in abortion or may be considering abortion.
  • I also encourage you to seek out a local Christian organization near you.  It is helpful to have someone you can meet with face to face who shares your Christian view on life and can help you through this difficult issue.   Jesus wants us to work together as the body of Christ to conquer abortion.

This is a serious and difficult topic for all involved, but we must not sugar coat it and make it out to be ok when it is a detestable custom before the Lord. Forgiveness is available to all who may have struggled in this area. Seek forgiveness through Christ and seek to help others avoid abortion.

Let Us Not Misuse What God Has Prepared For His Purposes

Jehovah expressed in great detail many practical aspects of how His people were to relate to Him. He was not random. He is intentional. Each detail has a purpose. We should take care to seek to understand His purpose and to apply it in our lives.

In Exodus 30, Jehovah reveals to Moses great detail in preparation of the anointing oil and incense for use in the tent of meeting. The anointing oil and incense were meant to symbolically make holy the tent of meeting. This means it symbolically shows that they are set apart for God’s use. They are special and not common. They have specific purpose. God demonstrated this should be done with excellence and great skill, not just throw together something that “smells nice”. God further insisted that it is not to be used for other common purposes. What He directed to be holy should not become common by being used for other purposes.

      22Moreover, the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 23“Take also for yourself the finest of spices: of flowing myrrh five hundred shekels, and of fragrant cinnamon half as much, two hundred and fifty, and of fragrant cane two hundred and fifty, 24and of cassia five hundred, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and of olive oil a hin. 25“You shall make of these a holy anointing oil, a perfume mixture, the work of a perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil. 26“With it you shall anoint the tent of meeting and the ark of the testimony, 27and the table and all its utensils, and the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense, 28and the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the laver and its stand. 29“You shall also consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them shall be holy. 30“You shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister as priests to Me. 31“You shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘This shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations. 32‘It shall not be poured on anyone’s body, nor shall you make any like it in the same proportions; it is holy, and it shall be holy to you. 33‘Whoever shall mix any like it or whoever puts any of it on a layman shall be cut off from his people.’”

The Incense

      34Then the LORD said to Moses, “Take for yourself spices, stacte and onycha and galbanum, spices with pure frankincense; there shall be an equal part of each. 35“With it you shall make incense, a perfume, the work of a perfumer, salted, pure, and holy. 36“You shall beat some of it very fine, and put part of it before the testimony in the tent of meeting where I will meet with you; it shall be most holy to you. 37“The incense which you shall make, you shall not make in the same proportions for yourselves; it shall be holy to you for the LORD. 38“Whoever shall make any like it, to use as perfume, shall be cut off from his people.”

If God takes that much care in the detail of creating incense and oil, imagine how much more He is interested in how He creates each of us as beings made in His image! Imagine the great care and attention as He knits together our genetic code to make each of us completely unique in all the world.

Psalm 139:13-14

      13For You formed my inward parts;
You wove me in my mother’s womb.

      14I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well.

We each have different gifts and abilities and weaknesses. He has specific purpose for each of us. We are to seek it out and live it. We are to develop the skills He has given us and use them for His purposes rather than our own.

If your gift is to sing, then sing to the glory of God. If your gift is in administration, do so to the glory of God. You get the idea. We are to set ourselves apart for His use and His service rather than for our own purposes. Pray that He would help you identify the gifts He has given you and seek wise counsel from those you trust around you as well to understand what you are good at and what you are not.

Then seek to live your life as an offering to our heavenly Father, a sweet smelling aroma like finely crafted incense.

Why Was It Important For Aaron To Wash His Feet?

There are sections of scripture which I often am tempted to read over quickly because the significance is not always clear to me. I find it a different way to read the Bible to break it into small pieces daily and refuse to skip over these sections, but instead read, reread, and study in some of the Biblical commentaries to understand their significance more clearly.

Reading through Exodus 30, I found myself tempted  to do so for some of the rituals about which God instructed Moses for Aaron and his sons. But if we take time to dig even a little below the surface we will often find some significance that reinforces the gospel message even today. That is because our God has not changed. How He wants to relate to His people and guide them has not changed.

Exodus 30:17-21

      17The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 18“You shall also make a laver of bronze, with its base of bronze, for washing; and you shall put it between the tent of meeting and the altar, and you shall put water in it. 19“Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet from it; 20when they enter the tent of meeting, they shall wash with water, so that they will not die; or when they approach the altar to minister, by offering up in smoke a fire sacrifice to the LORD. 21“So they shall wash their hands and their feet, so that they will not die; and it shall be a perpetual statute for them, for Aaron and his descendants throughout their generations.”

Certainly it seems a bit intimidating as to why God indicated that Aaron and his sons would die if they failed to wash their feet and hands before approaching Him. We could probably spend a bit of time here, but it would appear clear that this was important to our Father in heaven and He was making that clear to Aaron and his sons.

It is very unlikely that Jehovah was just concerned about dirty hands and feet or germs. So much of His instruction is for teaching the people about how to properly relate to Him. We should remember that Jehovah is a holy God. There is no sin in Him. We are sinful people. To be cleansed of sin once, such as when we come to Christ or when Aaron and his sons were made priests, is not enough. We must daily seek to cleanse our spirit from sin and repent and seek to become clean in order to maintain close relationship with the Lord. As Aaron and his sons were instructed to cleanse themselves daily, so too we can remind ourselves that we must choose to obey and follow our Lord daily. We must be cleansed of sin and rebellion if we are to develop a close relationship with the Father.

There is no power in water and soap to do this type of cleansing. That was a ritual to remind the priests. However, by accepting Jesus as Messiah and repenting from our sins we can be cleansed. This is not a one time activity but rather an ongoing part of our daily lives. Let us never grow complacent that “we accepted Jesus a long time ago. nothing else is required”. Accepting and submitting to Jesus is part of every day in our journey as a disciple of Christ.

Ask yourself, “How often to I consciously choose Christ in determining my attitudes and activities? Do I ask forgiveness often? Do I choose to repent from wrong behavior often? Do I test everything I do against the scripture or just accept what local community or church culture defines as acceptable? “

Jehovah Has Not Changed

The details Jehovah shares with us in Exodus about the tabernacle and the ceremonies He instructs His people to perform are not random, ancient, obsolete traditions. They were His instructions to His people for a reason. The details communicate much about sin and our relationship with our Father in heaven which we still can learn from, if we take time to study them.

Exodus 30:11-16

    11The LORD also spoke to Moses, saying, 12“When you take a census of the sons of Israel to number them, then each one of them shall give a ransom for himself to the LORD, when you number them, so that there will be no plague among them when you number them. 13“This is what everyone who is numbered shall give: half a shekel according to the shekel of the sanctuary (the shekel is twenty gerahs), half a shekel as a contribution to the LORD. 14“Everyone who is numbered, from twenty years old and over, shall give the contribution to the LORD. 15“The rich shall not pay more and the poor shall not pay less than the half shekel, when you give the contribution to the LORD to make atonement for yourselves. 16“You shall take the atonement money from the sons of Israel and shall give it for the service of the tent of meeting, that it may be a memorial for the sons of Israel before the LORD, to make atonement for yourselves.”

Of course, we know that we can not “buy” our forgiveness and redemption with money. The half shekel was symbolic. It reminds all the people, rich or poor, that they are sinners in need of redemption. Further, because the atonement money is put to use to support the tent of meeting, it points the people toward God for redemption. It further reminds us that all are equally sinners. No one was to pay more or less. All needed atonement and all need atonement equally.

Our true atonement for sin comes only through accepting Jesus Christ as Lord of our lives. We receive forgiveness through His death and resurrection. We can not buy it. There is no longer a tent of meeting even to use the atonement money if it was still collected.  However, the principles Jehovah was teaching His people are timeless… while they apply to Jehovah’s people thousands of years ago, they still apply to Jehovah’s people, disciples of Christ, today.

Bring Prayers Before Our Father As Fragrant Incense

There is much symbolism imbedded in the detailed plans Jehovah provided for the tabernacle in Exodus. Surely some have looked to hard and identified some symbolism that was not intended, but I can say with as much confidence that our Father was thoughtful in His plans. The tabernacle was intended to help His people understand how to relate to Him. As we explore the altar of incense in Exodus 30, let us remind ourselves that incense is compared as a metaphor elsewhere in scripture for prayer.

Psalm 141:2

      2May my prayer be counted as incense before You;
The lifting up of my hands as the evening offering.

Let us also consider that before one could approach the altar of incense, you would have to first pass by the altar where sacrifices were made to atone for sins. So too, we can be reminded that we must first repent for our sins and accept Jesus as Messiah before we are to approach Jehovah in prayer. The tabernacle is symbolic of Jehovah’s relationship with His people… then and still today.

Exodus 30:1-10

The Altar of Incense

      1“Moreover, you shall make an altar as a place for burning incense; you shall make it of acacia wood. 2“Its length shall be a cubit, and its width a cubit, it shall be square, and its height shall be two cubits; its horns shall be of one piece with it. 3“You shall overlay it with pure gold, its top and its sides all around, and its horns; and you shall make a gold molding all around for it. 4“You shall make two gold rings for it under its molding; you shall make them on its two side walls—on opposite sides—and they shall be holders for poles with which to carry it. 5“You shall make the poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold. 6“You shall put this altar in front of the veil that is near the ark of the testimony, in front of the mercy seat that is over the ark of the testimony, where I will meet with you. 7“Aaron shall burn fragrant incense on it; he shall burn it every morning when he trims the lamps. 8“When Aaron trims the lamps at twilight, he shall burn incense. There shall be perpetual incense before the LORD throughout your generations. 9“You shall not offer any strange incense on this altar, or burnt offering or meal offering; and you shall not pour out a drink offering on it. 10“Aaron shall make atonement on its horns once a year; he shall make atonement on it with the blood of the sin offering of atonement once a year throughout your generations. It is most holy to the LORD.”

The incense was not offered once and neglected. It was offered multiple times a day, every day. So, too with prayer. We are to keep in close relationship with our Creator through prayer. Prayer is more than just asking forgiveness or asking for God’s help in petition, though both of those are important. Prayer is listening. Prayer is praising and thanking our Father. These things are like a fragrant offering to the Lord.

Let us repent, or turn away, from wrong behaviors and attitudes. Let us humbly ask forgiveness. Yes we can bring our petitions before the Lord, but let us also bring praises and a thankful heart.  Let us do so every day, and do not be confined to just once a day by convention or habit. Come before Him as often as you can.
