He Has Overcome Death And The Grave

It can be hard to believe at times. Even the disciples struggled to accept the news at first, and Yeshua had told them ahead of time about what would happen. Our Lord and Savior died and did indeed overcome death and rise again back to life. We have the benefit of history and many eye witness accounts which we will read about in the scriptures following today’s reading from Luke 24, but for too many this is discounted and not considered for the true evidence which it documents.

Luke 24:1-12

The Resurrection

     1But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling clothing; 5and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead? 6“He is not here, but He has risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, 7saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.” 8And they remembered His words, 9and returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10Now they were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to the apostles. 11But these words appeared to them as nonsense, and they would not believe them. 12But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings only; and he went away to his home, marveling at what had happened.

We are to accept on faith, but faith based on evidence. It is not a blind faith.  Peter was not wrong to go and look. We are not wrong to study the evidence and follow where it leads, but follow carefully and without bias… and it confirms the life, death, and resurrection of Christ! YHWH never called us to believe based on blind faith. Creation itself declares His glory. The Bible documents many miracles and much of His relationship with His people. It gives us His plan from start to finish. We know the ending before it comes. Why do so many not believe? Pray the Spirit will strengthen your faith and that of others across our cities, states, and across the nation and the world.

Our Lord died for our sins a brutal death, but He rose again overcoming death and the grave. He is a living Savior! Let us now live with full confidence in our living savior. This news should affect how we live our lives. We should not be lost in our own plans and desires but rather pursuing His.

Whom Will You Choose?

We all must decide in our lives… whom will we choose? Will we choose to follow the crowd or will we choose Christ? The crowd will demand we reject Christ.  Even in many churches today, the members do not live according to the word of God. They live more by the laws of man than those of God.  There are an absurd number of churches that can’t figure out if God changed His mind on homosexuality because some mortal judges passed a court ruling by one vote. They pursue the ways of men rather than those of God.

Often the seeming easy route, the route to be praised and accepted by men, will lead away from God. Perhaps it is subtle sometimes and often not subtle at all. The crowd will not draw you toward God. We must seek personal holiness and a relationship with our Father in heaven. We must pray, worship, and study. We must ask for the Spirit to lead us and be willing to obey and follow, even when it is difficult or uncomfortable. Then perhaps we may be ready and willing to stand for Christ when all others around us call out to crucify Him.

Luke 23:13-25

Pilate Seeks Jesus’ Release

     13Pilate summoned the chief priests and the rulers and the people, 14and said to them, “You brought this man to me as one who incites the people to rebellion, and behold, having examined Him before you, I have found no guilt in this man regarding the charges which you make against Him. 15“No, nor has Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him. 16“Therefore I will punish Him and release Him.” 17[Now he was obliged to release to them at the feast one prisoner.]

      18But they cried out all together, saying, “Away with this man, and release for us Barabbas!” 19(He was one who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection made in the city, and for murder.) 20Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again, 21but they kept on calling out, saying, “Crucify, crucify Him!” 22And he said to them the third time, “Why, what evil has this man done? I have found in Him no guilt demanding death; therefore I will punish Him and release Him.” 23But they were insistent, with loud voices asking that He be crucified. And their voices began to prevail. 24And Pilate pronounced sentence that their demand be granted. 25And he released the man they were asking for who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, but he delivered Jesus to their will.

Jesus chose obedience to the Father. Jesus chose to die for our sins so we may be forgiven. Whom will you choose? Decide ahead of time or you will likely fail when the situation is difficult around you.  Start by asserting yourself for Christ in small ways at first to gain confidence if you find that helpful. Take small steps until you are ready to take bigger ones. Pray for God to help you be bold for Him.

Keep in mind that in some cases you will not face an angry mob. You may face coworkers or friends at the coffee bar or in the office kitchen or at lunch. They may just be speaking against Christ and how He calls us to live in seemingly small ways. Will you stand up for Christ?

Keep Your Eyes On The Father Rather Than Yourself

Pilate and Herod were not friends. In fact, the scripture tells us they were enemies. They came together and became friends while handling Yeshua’s case. Pilate seemed disinterested in justice and more interested in politics and looking for a way out of dealing with Yeshua. Herod was just looking to amuse himself, possibly see a sign from Yeshua. He and his guards mocked Yeshua. Somehow they were able to come together in the mistreatment of Yeshua and become friends.

Luke 23:-12

Jesus before Herod

     8Now Herod was very glad when he saw Jesus; for he had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had been hearing about Him and was hoping to see some sign performed by Him. 9And he questioned Him at some length; but He answered him nothing. 10And the chief priests and the scribes were standing there, accusing Him vehemently. 11And Herod with his soldiers, after treating Him with contempt and mocking Him, dressed Him in a gorgeous robe and sent Him back to Pilate. 12Now Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for before they had been enemies with each other.

Picture yourself in a situation like this. You are arrested for a crime you did not commit. Imaging the lawyers and police and judge(s) do not really care about whether or not you are guilty, but just mocking you for your faith or avoiding having to deal with your case. How many of us would assume this could not be the will of YHWH? We would be crying out to Him asking for His help. It would seem almost inconceivable that this was His will. It seems so “unfair”.

I find it to be very difficult to step outside of my personal situation and think that somehow when things are “going wrong” for me, that somehow it is right in line with YHWH’s plans. Yeshua understood the will of the Father. He stayed connected with intimate and consistent prayer. He asked for help to “take away this cup of suffering” in the garden before He was captured, but then submitted to the will of the Father. He handled Himself with grace and humility through the entirety of His “trial”, torture, and execution. He kept His eyes not on Himself but on the will of the Father.

That is a lesson I pray the Lord would help me with… to keep my eyes not on myself but on His will, even when things seem to be going wrong in my life. He is in control.

Will You Stand With Christ In Conflict With Man?

We all have days where we fail in our pursuit of living for Christ. Peter boasted that he would face death and not deny Christ, but quickly found out that is easier said than done. Christ knew Peter would fail, and told him so, but still loved Peter.

Luke 22:54-65

Jesus’ Arrest

     54Having arrested Him, they led Him away and brought Him to the house of the high priest; but Peter was following at a distance. 55After they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter was sitting among them. 56And a servant-girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight and looking intently at him, said, “This man was with Him too.” 57But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.” 58A little later, another saw him and said, “You are one of them too!” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!” 59After about an hour had passed, another man began to insist, saying, “Certainly this man also was with Him, for he is a Galilean too.” 60But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, “Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” 62And he went out and wept bitterly.

      63Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking Him and beating Him, 64and they blindfolded Him and were asking Him, saying, “Prophesy, who is the one who hit You?” 65And they were saying many other things against Him, blaspheming.

Let us indeed seek to be bold like Peter in our pursuit of living for Christ, but let us also seek humility and ask the Spirit for His grace to support and guide us. Keep in mind, the others had not even followed as far as Peter. Peter was in this position only because of his passion to support Christ and his boldness. We may not be in the same position as Peter, but we will face times where we either stand up for Christ amongst others who reject or deny Him or we don’t. We either make choices to live our lives in a way that is consistent with His instruction or we don’t. There is no middle ground. There is no “private” Christianity that we keep completely to ourselves.  When we stand for Christ, people may and often will make us feel uncomfortable or outright confront us.

We are also reminded we should not expect good treatment from those who reject Christ. If they treated Christ in this way, and He is infinitely better than us, then how shall they treat us?

Be prepared to face challenges in this world if you choose to live for Christ. When you fail, get back up again and ask forgiveness, pray again for help from the Spirit, and continue in your pursuit of living for Christ.

Decide ahead of time, will you stand with Christ in conflict with man?

Follow Yeshua’s Example of Prayer and Submission

Yeshua sets the example for intense prayer. We have a hard time living up to His example. No matter what we face, however, let us follow His example and come before the Father in prayer. Let us submit to the Father’s will and trust in the Father’s wisdom, even if we have an opinion or preference which is different. We may even pray for the Spirit’s help that we would not fall into temptation.

Luke 22:39-46

The Garden of Gethsemane

     39And He came out and proceeded as was His custom to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him. 40When He arrived at the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” 41And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, 42saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.” 43Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. 45When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, 46and said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

Let us model ourselves and our relationship with the Father after the example of Christ, whether we face big situations or every day small ones.

We See Persecution; The Lord Sees An Opportunity For Our Testimony

I believe that Yeshua is speaking both about an event in AD 70 where Rome devastated the Jewish people and tore down the temple and also about the end of the age and the conditions leading up to His second coming. The threads are knit together in Luke 21.

What is most compelling to me is that Christ sees an opportunity for our testimony where I see persecution. My natural tendency is to try to make plans to defend myself. Yeshua says 13“It will lead to an opportunity for your testimony. 14“So make up your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves; …”

I encourage you to read the passage with the thought that the end of the age and the persecution and suffering that come with it may come in our lifetime. Whether or not it does, is less relevant. We do not know when it will come but we can prepare ourselves. 

Luke 21:5-38

 5And while some were talking about the temple, that it was adorned with beautiful stones and votive gifts, He said, 6“As for these things which you are looking at, the days will come in which there will not be left one stone upon another which will not be torn down.”

      7They questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, when therefore will these things happen? And what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?” 8And He said, “See to it that you are not misled; for many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not go after them. 9“When you hear of wars and disturbances, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end does not follow immediately.”

Things to Come

     10Then He continued by saying to them, “Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, 11and there will be great earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines; and there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.

      12“But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you, delivering you to the synagogues and prisons, bringing you before kings and governors for My name’s sake. 13“It will lead to an opportunity for your testimony. 14“So make up your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves; 15for I will give you utterance and wisdom which none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute. 16“But you will be betrayed even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death, 17and you will be hated by all because of My name. 18“Yet not a hair of your head will perish. 19“By your endurance you will gain your lives.

      20“But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then recognize that her desolation is near. 21“Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those who are in the midst of the city must leave, and those who are in the country must not enter the city; 22because these are days of vengeance, so that all things which are written will be fulfilled. 23“Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days; for there will be great distress upon the land and wrath to this people; 24and they will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled under foot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

The Return of Christ

     25“There will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27“Then they will see THE SON OF MAN COMING IN A CLOUD with power and great glory. 28“But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

      29Then He told them a parable: “Behold the fig tree and all the trees; 30as soon as they put forth leaves, you see it and know for yourselves that summer is now near. 31“So you also, when you see these things happening, recognize that the kingdom of God is near. 32“Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all things take place. 33“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

      34“Be on guard, so that your hearts will not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will not come on you suddenly like a trap; 35for it will come upon all those who dwell on the face of all the earth. 36“But keep on the alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

      37Now during the day He was teaching in the temple, but at evening He would go out and spend the night on the mount that is called Olivet. 38And all the people would get up early in the morning to come to Him in the temple to listen to Him.

Shall we live in fear of these times? What are we to do in preparation?

9“When you hear of wars and disturbances, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end does not follow immediately.”

28“But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

   34“Be on guard, so that your hearts will not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will not come on you suddenly like a trap; 35for it will come upon all those who dwell on the face of all the earth. 36“But keep on the alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

He shall not leave us nor forsake us, even unto the end of the age.

Yeshua Can Not Be Tricked, But Beware Not To Trick Yourself

The scribes and the chief priests of Israel wanted to kill Yeshua. He spoke truth against them… against the established ways of religion and man. It upset them greatly. However, Yeshua had great standing amongst the people. They tried to trick Him so as to have a reason to accuse and arrest Him.

Yeshua can not be fooled. However, the chief priests and scribes indeed tricked themselves in rejecting Yeshua as He stood right before their eyes. They were blinded by their own bias and had their mind made up before ever considering the evidence before them.

Luke 20:19-26

Tribute to Caesar

     19The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on Him that very hour, and they feared the people; for they understood that He spoke this parable against them. 20So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, in order that they might catch Him in some statement, so that they could deliver Him to the rule and the authority of the governor. 21They questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, and You are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth. 22“Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 23But He detected their trickery and said to them, 24“Show Me a denarius. Whose likeness and inscription does it have?” They said, “Caesar’s.” 25And He said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 26And they were unable to catch Him in a saying in the presence of the people; and being amazed at His answer, they became silent.

On the surface we can pay attention to the teaching about paying taxes… give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s. Let us not only walk away with this knowing we should pay what taxes are due to government, but let us also recognize that we should give to God what is His. All that we are and all that we have belongs to God. Let us hold nothing back.

We should take care not to fool ourselves, for we surely can not fool Yeshua. Let us commit our lives fully to YHWH without excuses and without holding anything back. There is no good reason why any part of our life needs to be or should be outside of our submission to YHWH.

And for any who, like the chief priests and scribes, wish to find some fatal flaw in Christ or Christianity… you will not find it if you look thoroughly and genuinely enough, following the evidence and studying the scriptures and praying for the Spirit to guide you. You will find many flaws in people who claim Christianity and you will find many flaws in the Christianity which is taught in churches, but there are no flaws in Christ Himself and the Word of God is perfect, if properly understood. If you do go on this journey, do so with clear intent to follow the evidence in unbiased manner. If you go in, like so many, already with your mind made up that Christ is not God, or that God does not exist, you may find the answer you desire through your own bias. Follow the evidence in an unbiased way, not your opinions or those of the world.

How Will You Treat The Vineyard Owner?

The Israelites at times turned their backs on YHWH. They rejected his prophets and then killed His son, Yeshua. The Jewish people largely rejected Christ. As such, YHWH invited the gentiles to be grafted in to be His people in their place. If YHWH will allow His chosen people, Israel, to be replaced, none of us should be so arrogant as to think we can dictate the terms of our relationship to YHWH. He invites and accepts people on His own terms, which are outlined in the Bible.

YHWH will not force any to remain in relationship with Him. Nor will He hold back judgment for those who reject His offer through Christ of forgiveness by grace

Luke 20:9-18

Parable of the Vine-growers

     9And He began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and rented it out to vine-growers, and went on a journey for a long time. 10“At the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, so that they would give him some of the produce of the vineyard; but the vine-growers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11“And he proceeded to send another slave; and they beat him also and treated him shamefully and sent him away empty-handed. 12“And he proceeded to send a third; and this one also they wounded and cast out. 13“The owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.’ 14“But when the vine-growers saw him, they reasoned with one another, saying, ‘This is the heir; let us kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.’ 15“So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16“He will come and destroy these vine-growers and will give the vineyard to others.” When they heard it, they said, “May it never be!”

17But Jesus looked at them and said, “What then is this that is written:
‘THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED,
THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone’?

18“Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust.”

Those who reject Christ may feel as though they are having a victory in this world for a time. They may laugh and reassure themselves that they are in control. However, YHWH will hold them accountable for their sin should they continue their rejection of Christ’s offer of forgiveness through grace.

What decision will you make? How will you treat the vineyard owner and His messengers? His son?

I Will Sing of Lovingkindness and Justice

All who take this to heart and action it in their lives will draw near to the Lord and find both peace and joy.

Psalm 101

The Psalmist’s Profession of Uprightness.

A Psalm of David.

      1I will sing of lovingkindness and justice,
To You, O LORD, I will sing praises.

      2I will give heed to the blameless way.
When will You come to me?
I will walk within my house in the integrity of my heart.

      3I will set no worthless thing before my eyes;
I hate the work of those who fall away;
It shall not fasten its grip on me.

      4A perverse heart shall depart from me;
I will know no evil.

      5Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, him I will destroy;
No one who has a haughty look and an arrogant heart will I endure.

      6My eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me;
He who walks in a blameless way is the one who will minister to me.

      7He who practices deceit shall not dwell within my house;
He who speaks falsehood shall not maintain his position before me.

      8Every morning I will destroy all the wicked of the land,
So as to cut off from the city of the LORD all those who do iniquity.

Reflect Back On Decisions Made And Your Journey With YHWH

It is good to periodically reflect back on our lives and the decisions we made. Do so with honesty and pray the Spirit gives you insight. Acknowledge what went well. Admit to the mistakes you made. Think about how it fits with your obedience in following the instructions of YHWH. As Moses reflected back on the journey of the people out of Egypt, we can clearly see that the toughest times came when they disobeyed the Lord. The greatest victories come when they went forth in obedience and faith.

For me I see the same trend. However, one must be careful in how you judge success and failure. Judge based on the Lord’s values and instructions, not on the ways of men. Some of the best decisions I have made have been in obedience to the Lord, but perhaps led to less money but a win in my relationship with YHWH and my family. I count that as a win. Many would look only at the money and judge wrongly as a struggle or loss.

     1These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel across the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel and Laban and Hazeroth and Dizahab. 2It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea. 3In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the children of Israel, according to all that the LORD had commanded him to give to them, 4after he had defeated Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and Edrei. 5Across the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to expound this law, saying,

      6“The LORD our God spoke to us at Horeb, saying, ‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain. 7‘Turn and set your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites, and to all their neighbors in the Arabah, in the hill country and in the lowland and in the Negev and by the seacoast, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates. 8‘See, I have placed the land before you; go in and possess the land which the LORD swore to give to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to them and their descendants after them.’

      9“I spoke to you at that time, saying, ‘I am not able to bear the burden of you alone. 10‘The LORD your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are this day like the stars of heaven in number. 11‘May the LORD, the God of your fathers, increase you a thousand-fold more than you are and bless you, just as He has promised you! 12‘How can I alone bear the load and burden of you and your strife? 13‘Choose wise and discerning and experienced men from your tribes, and I will appoint them as your heads.’ 14“You answered me and said, ‘The thing which you have said to do is good.’ 15“So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and experienced men, and appointed them heads over you, leaders of thousands and of hundreds, of fifties and of tens, and officers for your tribes.

      16“Then I charged your judges at that time, saying, ‘Hear the cases between your fellow countrymen, and judge righteously between a man and his fellow countryman, or the alien who is with him. 17‘You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not fear man, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.’ 18“I commanded you at that time all the things that you should do.

      19“Then we set out from Horeb, and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw on the way to the hill country of the Amorites, just as the LORD our God had commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea. 20“I said to you, ‘You have come to the hill country of the Amorites which the LORD our God is about to give us. 21‘See, the LORD your God has placed the land before you; go up, take possession, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has spoken to you. Do not fear or be dismayed.’

      22“Then all of you approached me and said, ‘Let us send men before us, that they may search out the land for us, and bring back to us word of the way by which we should go up and the cities which we shall enter.’ 23“The thing pleased me and I took twelve of your men, one man for each tribe. 24“They turned and went up into the hill country, and came to the valley of Eshcol and spied it out. 25“Then they took some of the fruit of the land in their hands and brought it down to us; and they brought us back a report and said, ‘It is a good land which the LORD our God is about to give us.’

      26“Yet you were not willing to go up, but rebelled against the command of the LORD your God; 27and you grumbled in your tents and said, ‘Because the LORD hates us, He has brought us out of the land of Egypt to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us. 28‘Where can we go up? Our brethren have made our hearts melt, saying, “The people are bigger and taller than we; the cities are large and fortified to heaven. And besides, we saw the sons of the Anakim there.”’ 29“Then I said to you, ‘Do not be shocked, nor fear them. 30‘The LORD your God who goes before you will Himself fight on your behalf, just as He did for you in Egypt before your eyes, 31and in the wilderness where you saw how the LORD your God carried you, just as a man carries his son, in all the way which you have walked until you came to this place.’ 32“But for all this, you did not trust the LORD your God, 33who goes before you on your way, to seek out a place for you to encamp, in fire by night and cloud by day, to show you the way in which you should go.

      34“Then the LORD heard the sound of your words, and He was angry and took an oath, saying, 35‘Not one of these men, this evil generation, shall see the good land which I swore to give your fathers, 36except Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him and to his sons I will give the land on which he has set foot, because he has followed the LORD fully.’ 37“The LORD was angry with me also on your account, saying, ‘Not even you shall enter there. 38‘Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall enter there; encourage him, for he will cause Israel to inherit it. 39‘Moreover, your little ones who you said would become a prey, and your sons, who this day have no knowledge of good or evil, shall enter there, and I will give it to them and they shall possess it. 40‘But as for you, turn around and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.’

      41“Then you said to me, ‘We have sinned against the LORD; we will indeed go up and fight, just as the LORD our God commanded us.’ And every man of you girded on his weapons of war, and regarded it as easy to go up into the hill country. 42“And the LORD said to me, ‘Say to them, “Do not go up nor fight, for I am not among you; otherwise you will be defeated before your enemies.”’ 43“So I spoke to you, but you would not listen. Instead you rebelled against the command of the LORD, and acted presumptuously and went up into the hill country. 44“The Amorites who lived in that hill country came out against you and chased you as bees do, and crushed you from Seir to Hormah. 45“Then you returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD did not listen to your voice nor give ear to you. 46“So you remained in Kadesh many days, the days that you spent there.
