The psalm opens with a vivid image: a deer panting for water. This is not casual desire—it is desperate need. The psalmist’s soul thirsts not for relief or answers, but for God Himself. Yet that thirst exists alongside sorrow. Tears have become his food, and mockers question the very foundation of his faith: “Where is your God?”

Rather than suppressing his pain, the psalmist remembers. He recalls times of joyful worship, processions, and praise. Memory becomes both a source of comfort and a reminder of loss. The contrast deepens his grief, yet it also anchors his faith in what he knows to be true about God.

Twice in the psalm, the writer speaks directly to his own soul. This is not passive lament—it is active faith. He does not deny his despair, but he refuses to let it define him. He commands his soul to hope in God, confident that praise will return.

The psalm ends unresolved. The circumstances have not changed. The sorrow has not lifted. Yet hope has been spoken aloud. Psalm 42 teaches us that faith does not always feel triumphant. Sometimes faith looks like preaching truth to your own heart while still waiting for relief.

Application:

  • Be honest with God about spiritual dryness and longing.

  • Remember past encounters with God when present joy feels distant.

  • Refuse to let despair have the final word—speak hope to your soul.

  • Anchor faith in God’s character, not in changing circumstances.

  • Trust that praise will return, even if the night feels long.

Closing Prayer:
Father, You see the seasons when my soul feels weary and distant. Teach me to thirst for You above all else and to speak hope to my own heart when sorrow rises. Help me trust You in the waiting and believe that joy and praise will return in Your perfect time. In Yeshua’s name, Amen.

What Matters at the End (Genesis 48:1–11)

As someone nears the end of life, clarity often replaces distraction—revealing what truly mattered all along.

Key Verse:
“God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me.” —Genesis 48:3 NASB

Background Context:
Genesis 48 takes place near the end of Jacob’s life. Having been reunited with Joseph and settled in Egypt, Jacob knows his time is drawing to a close. Joseph brings his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, to see their grandfather. What follows is not merely a family moment, but a sacred one. Jacob reflects on God’s promises, adopts Joseph’s sons as his own, and prepares to pass on covenant blessing to the next generation.

This chapter gives us a rare window into the heart of a righteous man as he looks back on his life and forward in faith.

Genesis 48

Israel’s Last Days

      1Now it came about after these things that Joseph was told, “Behold, your father is sick.” So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim with him. 2When it was told to Jacob, “Behold, your son Joseph has come to you,” Israel collected his strength and sat up in the bed. 3Then Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, 4and He said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and numerous, and I will make you a company of peoples, and will give this land to your descendants after you for an everlasting possession.’ 5“Now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are. 6“But your offspring that have been born after them shall be yours; they shall be called by the names of their brothers in their inheritance. 7“Now as for me, when I came from Paddan, Rachel died, to my sorrow, in the land of Canaan on the journey, when there was still some distance to go to Ephrath; and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).”

      8When Israel saw Joseph’s sons, he said, “Who are these?” 9Joseph said to his father, “They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” So he said, “Bring them to me, please, that I may bless them.” 10Now the eyes of Israel were so dim from age that he could not see. Then Joseph brought them close to him, and he kissed them and embraced them. 11Israel said to Joseph, “I never expected to see your face, and behold, God has let me see your children as well.”

Reflection on Genesis 48:1–11:
Many have observed that as someone approaches the end of their life, they often gain greater insight into what truly mattered—what was worth pursuing and what was not. Even those who spent their lives chasing power, wealth, or status sometimes recognize how empty those pursuits were. How much more wisdom, then, can we gain by listening to a righteous man as he reflects on his life and walk with God.

As Jacob prepares to bless Joseph’s sons, he does not dwell on his achievements or regrets. Instead, he speaks of God. He recounts God’s appearance at Luz and reflects on the promises made to him—promises he had not yet seen fully fulfilled. Yet there is no bitterness, no disappointment, and no hint of doubt. Jacob speaks with complete confidence that God’s promises are unfolding exactly as intended.

Jacob’s faith is not rooted in what he can see, but in who God has proven Himself to be. Even at the end of his life, Jacob trusts that God is still at work beyond his own lifetime. This is a faith that understands God’s purposes are generational.

Family also weighs heavily on Jacob’s heart. He does not complain about the years he lost with Joseph. Instead, he gives glory to God for restoration. He marvels that he has been allowed not only to see Joseph again, but also Joseph’s children. Gratitude replaces resentment. Worship replaces regret.

Jacob’s adoption of Ephraim and Manasseh underscores the importance he places on passing along blessing. He believes deeply in the multi-generational promise of God. What God has begun will continue, even after Jacob is gone.

Though Jacob briefly recalls the sorrow of losing Rachel, there is no fear in him. Scripture presents him as a man at peace—prepared for death and confident that his journey with God does not end here. His life closes not in anxiety, but in trust.

Application:

  • Slow down and reflect on what truly matters in your life.

  • Examine whether your values align with God’s priorities or your own desires.

  • Cultivate confidence in God’s promises, even when they remain partially unseen.

  • Treasure restored relationships and give God glory for them.

  • Invest intentionally in the next generation’s spiritual legacy.

Closing Prayer:
Father, thank You for the testimony of a life lived in faith. Help me reflect honestly on what matters most and align my heart with Your will. Strengthen my trust in Your promises, deepen my gratitude for restored relationships, and guide me to live in a way that leaves a legacy of faith for those who come after me. In Yeshua’s name, Amen.

God’s Provision vs. God’s Promise (Genesis 47)

What happens when God provides abundantly—yet your heart slowly settles for less than His best?

Key Verse:
“So Israel lived in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen; and they acquired property in it and were fruitful and became very numerous.” —Genesis 47:27 NASB

Background Context:
Genesis 47 records Jacob and his family settling in Egypt during the famine. Pharaoh grants them the fertile land of Goshen, and Joseph continues administering Egypt’s food system, which places the population increasingly under Pharaoh’s control. God’s promises of growth and provision are being fulfilled—but quietly, the spiritual tension of living outside the promised land begins to surface.

This chapter highlights both God’s faithfulness and the subtle dangers of comfort, compromise, and survival-focused living.

Genesis 47

Jacob’s Family Settles in Goshen

      1Then Joseph went in and told Pharaoh, and said, “My father and my brothers and their flocks and their herds and all that they have, have come out of the land of Canaan; and behold, they are in the land of Goshen.” 2He took five men from among his brothers and presented them to Pharaoh. 3Then Pharaoh said to his brothers, “What is your occupation?” So they said to Pharaoh, “Your servants are shepherds, both we and our fathers.” 4They said to Pharaoh, “We have come to sojourn in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants’ flocks, for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now, therefore, please let your servants live in the land of Goshen.” 5Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you. 6“The land of Egypt is at your disposal; settle your father and your brothers in the best of the land, let them live in the land of Goshen; and if you know any capable men among them, then put them in charge of my livestock.”

      7Then Joseph brought his father Jacob and presented him to Pharaoh; and Jacob blessed Pharaoh. 8Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How many years have you lived?” 9So Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The years of my sojourning are one hundred and thirty; few and unpleasant have been the years of my life, nor have they attained the years that my fathers lived during the days of their sojourning.” 10And Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from his presence. 11So Joseph settled his father and his brothers and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had ordered. 12Joseph provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with food, according to their little ones.

      13Now there was no food in all the land, because the famine was very severe, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished because of the famine. 14Joseph gathered all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan for the grain which they bought, and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house. 15When the money was all spent in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, “Give us food, for why should we die in your presence? For our money is gone.” 16Then Joseph said, “Give up your livestock, and I will give you food for your livestock, since your money is gone.” 17So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them food in exchange for the horses and the flocks and the herds and the donkeys; and he fed them with food in exchange for all their livestock that year. 18When that year was ended, they came to him the next year and said to him, “We will not hide from my lord that our money is all spent, and the cattle are my lord’s. There is nothing left for my lord except our bodies and our lands. 19“Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for food, and we and our land will be slaves to Pharaoh. So give us seed, that we may live and not die, and that the land may not be desolate.”

Result of the Famine

      20So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, for every Egyptian sold his field, because the famine was severe upon them. Thus the land became Pharaoh’s. 21As for the people, he removed them to the cities from one end of Egypt’s border to the other. 22Only the land of the priests he did not buy, for the priests had an allotment from Pharaoh, and they lived off the allotment which Pharaoh gave them. Therefore, they did not sell their land. 23Then Joseph said to the people, “Behold, I have today bought you and your land for Pharaoh; now, here is seed for you, and you may sow the land. 24“At the harvest you shall give a fifth to Pharaoh, and four-fifths shall be your own for seed of the field and for your food and for those of your households and as food for your little ones.” 25So they said, “You have saved our lives! Let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s slaves.” 26Joseph made it a statute concerning the land of Egypt valid to this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth; only the land of the priests did not become Pharaoh’s.

      27Now Israel lived in the land of Egypt, in Goshen, and they acquired property in it and were fruitful and became very numerous. 28Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years; so the length of Jacob’s life was one hundred and forty-seven years.

      29When the time for Israel to die drew near, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “Please, if I have found favor in your sight, place now your hand under my thigh and deal with me in kindness and faithfulness. Please do not bury me in Egypt, 30but when I lie down with my fathers, you shall carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burial place.” And he said, “I will do as you have said.” 31He said, “Swear to me.” So he swore to him. Then Israel bowed in worship at the head of the bed.

Reflection on Genesis 47:
The chapter opens with Joseph carefully presenting his family to Pharaoh. The brothers identify themselves as shepherds—an occupation despised by Egyptians—which results in separation rather than assimilation. This protects Israel spiritually, even while they benefit materially.

Jacob’s interaction with Pharaoh is striking. Though Pharaoh holds earthly power, Jacob blesses him. The blessing flows not from position, but from covenant relationship with God. Jacob openly acknowledges that his years have been few and difficult, yet God has preserved him through every stage.

Meanwhile, Joseph’s administration saves lives—but at a cost. The people of Egypt gradually give up their money, livestock, land, and ultimately themselves to survive. What begins as provision ends in dependency. The contrast is subtle but important: Egypt survives the famine, but Israel flourishes.

The chapter closes with a quiet warning and a hopeful note. Israel grows and prospers in Goshen, but Jacob knows Egypt is not home. Before his death, he asks to be buried in Canaan. Even in comfort, his heart remains anchored in God’s promise.

Genesis 47 reminds us that God can provide abundantly in seasons that are not permanent—and that comfort should never replace calling.

Application:

  • Recognize God’s provision without confusing it for His promise.

  • Guard your heart in seasons of comfort. Growth can coexist with spiritual drift.

  • Remember where your true home is. Temporary provision is not eternal purpose.

  • Live distinctively, even when surrounded by a different culture.

  • Keep faith future-focused. God’s promises extend beyond present survival.

Closing Prayer:
Father, thank You for sustaining us in every season. Help us receive Your provision with gratitude without losing sight of Your promises. Guard our hearts from settling where You have called us to sojourn, and keep our hope anchored in what You have prepared. In Yeshua’s name, Amen.

Super Bowl Reflections – Do You Compete to Win for Christ?

As the Super Bowl draws near and the national championship for college football has recently been completed, it is an interesting time to reflect on what effort and dedication it takes to compete in such a way as to win. Beyond this, it is also a good time to reflect on what we choose to prepare and compete for.

People enter competitions of all kinds throughout the world: sports, crafts, baking, writing… even hot-dog-eating contests. Yes, really. People enthusiastically compete to eat the most hot dogs in a few minutes. No matter what the contest is, those who win had to work hard and dedicate themselves to the competition to compete well.

Much glory is given to those who win and win consistently. In particular, athletes are raised up by society as having accomplished something meaningful when they compete at a high level of ability. Inevitably, those who reach the highest levels have devoted much of their time and effort to preparation and training.

For example, NFL Super Bowl champions did not sit around watching TV on the couch all year, eating whatever junk food they feel like and practicing once in awhile maybe an hour a week. They were working hard to prepare their minds and bodies all year long. Their pursuit of greatness in a particular field becomes a huge part of their personal identity.

It is much the same way for us to succeed in a life spent truly serving God. I do not mean one in which we just go to church once a week, or occasionally open the Bible or help someone. We must train as the athletes do… train to win!

Study consistently the word of God in the Bible, pray daily, apply the word of God to our own lives by changing our wrong behaviors and attitudes… even when others might say we are “good enough”. Those who accept man’s definition of “good enough” will never achieve greatness.

We must use the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ and the scriptures in the Bible as the standard for what is good enough. We must work hard and dedicate ourselves to keep moving toward that holy example. Do not settle for being “better than most” because “most” fall far short of the standard God calls us to work toward.

Ask how many champions in this world, at any event, attribute their success to a dedication to “sort of work at something when they have time” and a satisfaction with being “better than most”. I tell you none with this attitude have achieved greatness.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27

  24Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. 25Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 26Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; 27but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.

Perhaps you should also consider that if you spent more time, energy, and focus pursuing a great Super Bowl party than you have in seeking God over the same period of time… you may want to reconsider your priorities.

Do not get complacent.  Continue to know, love and serve God forever. Obey His commands. Fear Him instead of man. It is a journey where we never reach the final destination in this life, but it transforms us along the way to become more like Jesus Christ and less like our own selfish nature.

Father, please give me a passion and desire to draw near to You through study, prayer, and worship. Help me see others through Your eyes so that I would have a heart for kindness and helping others. Strengthen me to have the discipline to focus my life around You even when life seems busy and full of distractions. Help me to run the race to win, but focused on You instead of worldly things. Please help all Your people in this manner so that we would truly be transformed in Your image and be a light to others to draw them to You. Amen.
