You Can’t Fool Jesus By “Looking Good” In Your Faith

Context is very important in understanding scripture properly. We must be careful to understand the context of verses we read and seek to understand in order to properly apply them.

Take time to review the whole context of Mark 11. Jesus had just entered Jerusalem to much fanfare and attention. It was approaching the last week of His earthly ministry. He confronted the hypocrisy at the temple whereby the place of worship had been turned into a “robber’s den”. He turned the tables of the money changers. He used a fig tree to demonstrate to His disciples the hypocrisy of the Jews who claim to serve God and put on a good appearance externally, but who bear no fruit. The punishment for claiming God by name and rejecting Him in action, as demonstrated by Jesus’ treatment of the fig tree, was direct and tangible. He withered the tree.

With that as a backdrop, Jesus and His disciples came again to Jerusalem and received some questions from the chief hypocrites… I mean priests. Their inquiry was not a genuine effort to understand Jesus. Mark 11:18 already indicates they were plotting to destroy Jesus… and Jesus knows it.   

Mark 11:27-33

Jesus’ Authority Questioned

      27They came again to Jerusalem. And as He was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to Him, 28and began saying to Him, “By what authority are You doing these things, or who gave You this authority to do these things?” 29And Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question, and you answer Me, and then I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30“Was the baptism of John from heaven, or from men? Answer Me.” 31They began reasoning among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ 32“But shall we say, ‘From men’?”—they were afraid of the people, for everyone considered John to have been a real prophet. 33Answering Jesus, they said, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Nor will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Jesus has little time or empathy for hypocrites who claim God, but reject Him and do their own thing. He knows the people asking the question are just trying to trap Him. He treats them accordingly. He quickly turns the tables on them and sets His own trap. They refuse to answer, and so does He. Checkmate.

What does this mean for you and me? Jesus can see right through us when we claim to honor Him with our lips but reject Him with our attitudes and actions. He is not fooled as we can sometimes fool other people or even ourselves. Instead of trying to “look good” in our faith and still live how we want to, let us seek to genuinely and wholeheartedly sacrifice our desires to the service of our Lord and Creator. Let us ask for His help and then genuinely turn away from our plans and yield ourselves to the walk that Jesus calls us to live in following Him.

Father, please help me not to try to fool You. I may fool myself, but never You. Help me to be fully honest and transparent with You. You know everything already anyway. Help me to embrace Your authority and accept Your rebuke without challenging it. Let it guide me to draw closer to You. Amen.

Bear Fruit for God’s Kingdom: The Withered Fig Tree

Why did Yeshua wither the fig tree we read about in Mark 11? Is it true He destroyed the tree for not having fruit, even though it was not yet season for figs… didn’t He know? Was He just hungry and did He get angry?

No, He did not destroy the tree out of anger. I believe Yeshua was making a more important point and using the tree as a symbol, or parable.  We must study in the context of what was going on around this activity and understand a bit more about fig trees as well.

For fig trees, the leaves do not precede the fruit. So the fact that the tree was in leaf, meant it should have had fruit.. regardless of the early time in the season (For more, read fruitless fig tree – Ligonier Ministries). The tree represents the hypocrisy of the Jewish religious leaders and nation at large. They give a good appearance from a distance that they are obeying and following God… you can see the leaves from afar. However, when you inspect closer, you find that there was no fruit. It was hypocrisy. A nation that claimed to serve God but failed to produce real fruit of His kingdom at that time. Yeshua destroyed it as an example of what was to come to the Jewish people.

Mark 11:11-14

    11Jesus entered Jerusalem and came into the temple; and after looking around at everything, He left for Bethany with the twelve, since it was already late.

      12On the next day, when they had left Bethany, He became hungry. 13Seeing at a distance a fig tree in leaf, He went to see if perhaps He would find anything on it; and when He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14He said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” And His disciples were listening.

Jesus Drives Money Changers from the Temple

      15Then they came to Jerusalem. And He entered the temple and began to drive out those who were buying and selling in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves; 16and He would not permit anyone to carry merchandise through the temple. 17And He began to teach and say to them, “Is it not written, ‘MY HOUSE SHALL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF PRAYER FOR ALL THE NATIONS’? But you have made it a ROBBERS’ DEN.” 18The chief priests and the scribes heard this, and began seeking how to destroy Him; for they were afraid of Him, for the whole crowd was astonished at His teaching.

      19When evening came, they would go out of the city.

      20As they were passing by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots up. 21Being reminded, Peter said to Him, “Rabbi, look, the fig tree which You cursed has withered.” 22And Jesus answered saying to them, “Have faith in God. 23“Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him. 24“Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you. 25“Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you your transgressions. 26[“But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive your transgressions.”]

There are still many churches and people who claim to follow Christ today, that bear no fruit. They are hypocrites, claiming the name of God, but serving Him not. They look good from afar, but bear no fruit when you inspect closer. Look around not only at others near you or at your church, but also at your own life. Try to look objectively for evidence of the fruit that should be evident in your life. There should be data or evidence of your faith in following Jesus. Pray for God to speak to you and show you with open eyes whether or not you are bearing fruit for His kingdom.

Do not be satisfied to look good but bear no fruit… like the fig tree. Yeshua was not impressed.

Do Not Set Aside The Commandments of God for the Tradition of Men

Yeshua firmly reminds us to seek to understand and live according to the commandments of Yahweh rather than the traditions of men. Many of us have read the scripture in Mark 7 and just thought… “Those Pharisees were really lost.” But I challenge each of us to dig deeper. The same is true in our churches and society today around the world. There is often a push to set aside the commandments of Yahweh as “irrelevant” or “obsolete” and to instead live according to tradition of our family, our culture, or even our church.

Mark 7:1-13

Followers of Tradition

      1The Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered around Him when they had come from Jerusalem, 2and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with impure hands, that is, unwashed. 3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they carefully wash their hands, thus observing the traditions of the elders; 4and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they cleanse themselves; and there are many other things which they have received in order to observe, such as the washing of cups and pitchers and copper pots.) 5The Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with impure hands?”

6And He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:
‘THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS,
BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME.

      7‘BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME,
TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.’

8“Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.”

      9He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition. 10“For Moses said, ‘HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER’; and, ‘HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER, IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH’; 11but you say, ‘If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),’ 12you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother; 13thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”

We must truly challenge ourselves to test everything against the holy scriptures. There are many examples where we as Christians have strayed in large numbers from the commands of Yahweh. An easy, basic example is activities around Sabbath. Do Christians truly seek to obey Yahweh’s command around Sabbath weekly? Do we avoid work? Do we rest and seek Him on this day each week? The facts are we do not even celebrate our day of worship broadly on the same day that He commanded. From the beginning He created the earth and rested on the seventh day, which for us is Saturday. Jesus and the disciples recognized Sabbath in what would correspond to our current Gregorian calendar as Friday at sundown to Saturday at sundown. We have created and follow traditions of men instead of those laid out by Yahweh and demonstrated even by Yeshua!

Similar exploration could be fruitful regarding holy days, or appointed times. Yahweh lays out the holy days in Leviticus 23, and elsewhere, that we are commanded to obey for all generations. However, rather than celebrate these (e.g. Passover), we instead have created our own traditions to replace them. We create a new tradition of men to celebrate the birth of Christ and then blend it in with pagan celebrations and traditions and cling to it as if it is from Yahweh. We do the same with resurrection, pursuing pagan practices like Easter eggs instead of celebrating Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread, as commanded.

God commands us to not have graven images as part of worship, but in many cases man puts carved images of Yeshua or Mary in their churches where we worship. Yahweh commands us not to covet, or to be envious of what others have. Yet our culture is saturated with an attitude of needing to have what others have, even if we can’t afford it. People go into debt so far they can never dig out.

Yahweh calls us to trust in Him, but instead most put their trust in money. Scripture warns us that we can not serve two masters. We will love one and hate the other. We must choose if we trust and serve our Father or money.

Yahweh calls us to repentance. It is the first teaching from Yeshua in His earthly ministry and the first for the disciples whom He sent out. It is ripe throughout the history of Yahweh’s prophets in the messages they bring. It is the very core of our faith. However, culture and society claim that all people are inherently good instead of sinful. We are told to accept people the way they are rather than call for and lead them to change. Why is it that our culture insists we are not supposed to talk about gluttony, but rather just accept people as they are… which is not helping them at all. In the USA there is a tremendous obesity problem resulting in all sorts of health issues impacting people’s lives. Why are we not supposed to speak the truth about homosexuality and other sexual identify confusion? Why are we not to engage one another to repent regarding coveting or sex outside marriage? The tradition of men continues to march on away from the commands of Yahweh, insisting that accepting everyone as they are, without repentance, is good. But our Father tells us to lovingly confront one another and help one another to repent and change our behaviors.

I could go on. The traditions of men continue to push out and overshadow the commands of Yahweh broadly in our world today. Seek prayerfully where you need to make changes in your life to obey Yahweh more, and the traditions of men less.

Father please bring about an awakening to contrast the ways of man from Your ways. Bring about the restoration of all things to return to Your ways and bring You glory. Defeat the plans of the wicked. Raise up and defend the righteous for Your name’s sake. Open the eyes of Your people to their sin and disregard for Your commandments and lead us to repentance on a broad scale across our nation and the world. Help us to have the strength and courage to challenge and test what we have long accepted as correct and further to walk away from those things for which we need to let go so we can return to Your ways instead of the ways of man. Amen.

Do Not Be Conformed to This World

How shall we treat one another as brothers and sisters in the faith? How shall we treat those who consider us their enemies? Let us not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our mind, so that we may prove that the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. We are to be different from the world even though we live within it.

Romans 12

Dedicated Service

      1Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. 2And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

      3For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. 4For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, 5so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; 7if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; 8or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

      9Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. 10Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; 11not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; 12rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, 13contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality.

      14Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. 17Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. 18If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. 19Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY,” says the Lord. 20“BUT IF YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM, AND IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK; FOR IN SO DOING YOU WILL HEAP BURNING COALS ON HIS HEAD.” 21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

What a fantastic summary of how we are to be in this world if we are to be disciples of Christ! When we live like this we are certainly not conformed to the world. Through the Holy Spirit we can continue striving to live according to these instructions.

This scripture is worth reading over a few times and prayerfully reflecting on each element as it applies in our lives. Are there areas we can be encouraged that we feel we are living up to these instructions? What are they for you? Are there areas that you find the Holy Spirit reminding you that you need to do better? What are they? Pray that God would help you on your journey to be more like Christ. This is a great summary of some key attitude and behavior elements to focus on.

Father, please lead and guide me. Grant me deeper understanding of Your word. Help me to live according to Your instructions laid out by Paul in Romans 12. Help all of Your people to do so. Let us be a light to draw others to You.

Feeling Remorse and Selective Obedience

We are going to explore two aspects of the historical account in Matthew 27. There is a difference between feeling remorse and asking God for forgiveness. Second, selective obedience to the laws of God.

It is interesting to reflect on the remorse of Judas and the reaction of the chief priests after they had taken Yeshua into custody. Judas felt remorse when he heard Yeshua had been condemned. What did He think was going to happen when He turned Yeshua in? The chief priests hear that Judas declares Yeshua innocent, and they don’t care a bit, but they turn to the law and refuse to put the money back in the temple treasury. They have clearly twisted their thoughts in a knot with a decision to convict Yeshua before any facts were assessed. They rationalize executing an innocent man as if it is not murder, but then refuse to break a much less significant law.

Matthew 27:1-10

Judas’s Remorse

      1Now when morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus to put Him to death; 2and they bound Him, and led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate the governor.

      3Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? See to that yourself!” 5And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself. 6The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood.” 7And they conferred together and with the money bought the Potter’s Field as a burial place for strangers. 8For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “AND THEY TOOK THE THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER, THE PRICE OF THE ONE WHOSE PRICE HAD BEEN SET by the sons of Israel; 10AND THEY GAVE THEM FOR THE POTTER’S FIELD, AS THE LORD DIRECTED ME.”

Notice that Judas did not repent. He did not turn to God and ask forgiveness. He simply felt guilty for what he had done. This is a very important distinction. One we should all heed carefully. If we do wrong, it is not enough to feel bad and try to fix it. We must turn to God and ask forgiveness and submit to Him.

As for the behavior of the chief priests, we must be on guard that we don’t get so focused on a certain outcome that we lose track of what is righteous and what is wicked. It is no good to reject God’s ways to accomplish what we want (e.g. murder of Yeshua in this case), and then to carefully cling to other laws and instructions as if we are righteous. We must serve Him fully, and with emphasis on the more important commands to be sure. Perhaps a silly comparison would be if a man’s son would avoid taking a cookie from a cookie jar without permission, but then steal $100 from his wallet or beat up the little boy next door. That is not righteousness.

Father, please lead me in righteousness. Help me stay fully submitted to You. Let me not get blinded by what I want, but faithfully serve You in what You want. When I sin, help me turn to You and ask forgiveness. Amen.

The Wicked Are Hypocrites; Do Not Expect Fair Play

The wicked are hypocrites. Do not expect fair play. They have one set of rules for them and another set for others. It is perfectly fine in her eyes for Athaliah to kill all her son’s children so she can become queen. However, she calls it treason that someone saved one and restores them rightfully to the throne.

Athaliah Queen of Judah

      1When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she rose and destroyed all the royal offspring. 2But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah and stole him from among the king’s sons who were being put to death, and placed him and his nurse in the bedroom. So they hid him from Athaliah, and he was not put to death. 3So he was hidden with her in the house of the LORD six years, while Athaliah was reigning over the land.

      4Now in the seventh year Jehoiada sent and brought the captains of hundreds of the Carites and of the guard, and brought them to him in the house of the LORD. Then he made a covenant with them and put them under oath in the house of the LORD, and showed them the king’s son. 5He commanded them, saying, “This is the thing that you shall do: one third of you, who come in on the sabbath and keep watch over the king’s house 6(one third also shall be at the gate Sur, and one third at the gate behind the guards), shall keep watch over the house for defense. 7“Two parts of you, even all who go out on the sabbath, shall also keep watch over the house of the LORD for the king. 8“Then you shall surround the king, each with his weapons in his hand; and whoever comes within the ranks shall be put to death. And be with the king when he goes out and when he comes in.”

      9So the captains of hundreds did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded. And each one of them took his men who were to come in on the sabbath, with those who were to go out on the sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest. 10The priest gave to the captains of hundreds the spears and shields that had been King David’s, which were in the house of the LORD. 11The guards stood each with his weapons in his hand, from the right side of the house to the left side of the house, by the altar and by the house, around the king. 12Then he brought the king’s son out and put the crown on him and gave him the testimony; and they made him king and anointed him, and they clapped their hands and said, “Long live the king!”

      13When Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she came to the people in the house of the LORD. 14She looked and behold, the king was standing by the pillar, according to the custom, with the captains and the trumpeters beside the king; and all the people of the land rejoiced and blew trumpets. Then Athaliah tore her clothes and cried, “Treason! Treason!” 15And Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of hundreds who were appointed over the army and said to them, “Bring her out between the ranks, and whoever follows her put to death with the sword.” For the priest said, “Let her not be put to death in the house of the LORD.” 16So they seized her, and when she arrived at the horses’ entrance of the king’s house, she was put to death there.

      17Then Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and the people, that they would be the LORD’S people, also between the king and the people. 18All the people of the land went to the house of Baal, and tore it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces thoroughly, and killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed officers over the house of the LORD. 19He took the captains of hundreds and the Carites and the guards and all the people of the land; and they brought the king down from the house of the LORD, and came by the way of the gate of the guards to the king’s house. And he sat on the throne of the kings. 20So all the people of the land rejoiced and the city was quiet. For they had put Athaliah to death with the sword at the king’s house.

      21Jehoash was seven years old when he became king.

Hypocrisy really is an interesting “tell” about what is in someone’s heart and mind. Yeshua, and those who follow Him closely, have but one standard of righteousness and it applies to everyone equally. The wicked, or those far from relationship with Yeshua, often have a different standard for them than for the rest of the people.

You see this commonly still today and it becomes most obvious in observing people in high profile leadership positions. We see governors and mayors declare the people must stay home and wear masks, then they disregard their own guidelines and do as they please. We can see this in congress and many places throughout government. Congress has a health plan that is entirely different (and better) than what they prescribe or force upon the rest of the people. Some will decry how bad it is to have legal challenges in an election when in the past few years they voiced an entirely different opinion… when the shoe was on the other foot so to speak in terms of who was winning or losing a particular election.

Many in our culture today seem to disregard hypocrisy as if it is not a big deal. I see it as a good tell into someone’s heart and mind to show if they really view themselves in humility or put themselves on a pedestal.

Thoughtfully and prayerfully reflect if there are any areas of hypocrisy in your life which need to be addressed to draw nearer to the LORD. Ask His help to show you and help you make adjustments.

On Following The Law and Judging Good From Evil

We are going to touch on two topics that are sometimes very sensitive amongst many Christians. None the less, we will try to do so based on God’s word rather than man’s opinions and will try to address it head on. Many today struggle with understanding the role today of God’s law and also of Christians to judge right from wrong.

I think many Christians today do not understand “God’s law”. The translation from Hebrew is actually God’s instruction. Satan has gotten many wrapped up in claiming “the law” is obsolete in its entirety. However, these same people often still claim some significance to a Sabbath, even if on Sunday instead of Sat. They often still say it is wrong to steal. Some would say kids should obey their parents. Most would agree we should not murder. These are all parts of God’s instruction, or “law”. So what people often don’t realize is that they are picking and choosing which instructions to keep and which to disregard. In most cases, they don’t realize they are doing this and they just accept whatever has been normalized in society rather than the unchanging truth of God’s word in the Bible.

One easy example i can recall in my own lifetime is pertaining to Sabbath. We can hold for now on the subject of Sabbath being Sat vs. Sun and just observe that in our culture society used to shut down stores on Sunday for Sabbath. Now they don’t. Did God’s instruction or command about keeping the Sabbath holy change in the last 20 years?  Similarly many other such changes have occurred but many took place over a thousand years. Thus we don’t see the changes in our own lifetime and start to normalize to the changes. That is why we should always test everything and go back to the Bible.

I also recognize that we are not physically able to keep the law right now as there is no temple and Levitical priesthood. Similar to when the Israelites were in captivity in Babylon, we now can not make sacrifices and observe all the other commands. But this should not be an excuse to not observe the ones we can as much as we can.  Always recognize that following the law will not save anyone. Only forgiveness and redemption by grace, through faith in Christ saves. However, it does demonstrate our love and obedience for YHWH. It helps us to identify what is and is not sin, helping guide us to repentance and seeking forgiveness. It shows us our need for a savior.

In John 7, Yeshua actually addresses a crowd. He acknowledges that the law of Moses is important and points out that those who seek to kill Him don’t follow it.  He points out the hypocrisy with which they claim to want to kill him for breaking the law. The truth is that Yeshua did not break the law of God. Rather, the religious leaders had created their own interpretation of God’s law… their rules. It was these rules which Yeshua was demonstrating were not actually consistent with God’s law. Why would anyone be upset that He healed a man on the Sabbath? For Yeshua to heal one man in a few minutes… it did not take away from His ability to rest and focus on the Lord on Sabbath.

John 7:19-24

   19“Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek to kill Me?” 20The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?” 21Jesus answered them, “I did one deed, and you all marvel. 22“For this reason Moses has given you circumcision (not because it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man. 23“If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made an entire man well on the Sabbath? 24“Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”

The last point that Yeshua drives home is a very important one… and it is often lost in many contexts. We are to judge right from wrong. We are not to judge quickly and rashly according to appearance. We are to judge with righteous judgment. This applies to almost everything in our lives. It is simple really, but Satan has twisted it to convince many Christians that somehow they are not to judge any sinful behaviors as sin. That is false. We are to discern and judge, carefully and righteously. The Bible is our best guide book.

Worldliness vs. Godliness

Understanding from God is very different from understanding that is of the world. Let us judge carefully which we follow in our lives. Our actions will reveal our motivations.

James 3:14-16

     13Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. 14But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. 15This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. 16For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. 17But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. 18And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Bitter jealousy and selfish ambition are of the world. Arrogance as well. It brings disorder and evil and never peace. Godly wisdom is pure, gentle, peaceable, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruit and without hypocrisy. It brings peace.

Shall We Continue to Sin So That Grace May Increase?

It is a very important concept for followers of Jesus Christ to understand. When we ask Jesus to be our Lord and accept His offer of salvation by grace through faith that He died for our sins, we must also recognize that we are not to abuse that grace. For us to abuse grace by intentionally continuing to sin is to not truly submit to the lordship of Christ over sin and self. It is to not truly accept His offer of salvation.

We all sin, but let us never embrace it intentionally under the excuse that His grace will cover our sins. Instead let us seek to repent from sin, to turn away from it and toward the Father. Let us die to self and sin and rise in Christ to a new life. We need His help and He will provide it to those who truly invite Him in to be Lord of their life.

Romans 6

Believers Are Dead to Sin, Alive to God

      1What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? 2May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? 3Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7for he who has died is freed from sin.

      8Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. 10For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. 11Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

      12Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, 13and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

      15What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be! 16Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness? 17But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, 18and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. 19I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, resulting in further lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness, resulting in sanctification.

      20For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21Therefore what benefit were you then deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is death. 22But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life. 23For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

I can well remember a variety of sinful habits that I seemed unable to break on my own power. The more I turned my life over to the Father, the more I sought to learn and understand His word and apply it in my life, the more the Holy Spirit has revealed Himself in my life to guide me and strengthen me in my daily walk… in rejecting sin. I have been able to turn away from habits and behaviors that had me beat and stay away. However, temptation remains a challenge, trying to draw us in. Remain vigilant and focused. Choose righteousness over sin. The rewards in this life and beyond are priceless.

Appearances Can Be Deceiving

Often appearances can be deceiving. We may be impressed by someone’s outer appearance as they say long prayers or receive respectful greetings, but what are they really like? Not everyone who gives the appearance of following God and loving others truly does so. In fact, sometimes, they are complete hypocrites.

Mark 12:38-40

     38In His teaching He was saying: “Beware of the scribes who like to walk around in long robes, and like respectful greetings in the market places, 39and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, 40who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers; these will receive greater condemnation.”

Do not focus too much on the appearance someone may portray that makes them look important. Seek instead to judge them by their actions and motives. A pastor of a large church may seem impressive in his slick suit and big smile, but is he teaching scripture correctly or is he just tickling peoples ears with what they want to hear so he can feel important and popular and respected?

Not only should we pay attention to this scripture as we seek to identify genuine leaders from false ones, but also we must challenge ourselves to focus on what is important to God rather than just putting up good appearances before people… lest we be the ones who receive greater condemnation.
