Beware Of Those Who Seek Personal Glory Rather Than God’s Glory

The Sadducees did not believe in resurrection after death. They were not genuinely seeking answers from Yeshua in Luke 20, when they posed an elaborate, unrealistic question about resurrection. They were trying to trap Yeshua to somehow weakening the true argument about resurrection after death. They were disingenuous.

There are many like this today leading churches and getting rich on other people’s money, though they do not really believe. They are not really part of the body of Christ, but they pretend to be for personal honor and gain. They  “…like to walk around in long robes, and love respectful greetings in the market places, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, 47who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”

Luke 20:27-47

Is There a Resurrection?

      27Now there came to Him some of the Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection), 28and they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that IF A MAN’S BROTHER DIES, having a wife, AND HE IS CHILDLESS, HIS BROTHER SHOULD MARRY THE WIFE AND RAISE UP CHILDREN TO HIS BROTHER. 29“Now there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife and died childless; 30and the second 31and the third married her; and in the same way all seven died, leaving no children. 32“Finally the woman died also. 33“In the resurrection therefore, which one’s wife will she be? For all seven had married her.”

      34Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, 35but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36for they cannot even die anymore, because they are like angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. 37“But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the burning bush, where he calls the Lord THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB. 38“Now He is not the God of the dead but of the living; for all live to Him.” 39Some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” 40For they did not have courage to question Him any longer about anything.

      41Then He said to them, “How is it that they say the Christ is David’s son?

42“For David himself says in the book of Psalms,
‘THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD,
“SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,

      43UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET.”’
44“Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord,’ and how is He his son?”

      45And while all the people were listening, He said to the disciples, 46“Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love respectful greetings in the market places, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, 47who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”

Avoid men and women such as these. Pray for discernment. Refuse to assume everyone who claims to be a pastor or church leader is genuinely part of the body of Christ. Judge by their fruit and by their personal actions. Are they humble? Even great men can be humble. Billy Graham was humble. Abraham was humble. Many today, like in the past, were seeking personal profit and glory. Seek and follow Christ with those who genuinely seek Him also.

This Offer Expires When You Do

YHWH graciously and with lovingkindness allows us our entire lifetime to repent and turn to Him… to make Him lord over our lives… to ask forgiveness. But the offer of forgiveness does expire… it expires when we do. Once we die and move on to either heaven or hell, it is too late. There is no amount of prayer or regret that can influence where we spend our eternity after we die. We were given the chance and chose to go our own way.

Luke 16:19-31

The Rich Man and Lazarus

      19“Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day. 20“And a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores, 21and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man’s table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores. 22“Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried. 23“In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom. 24“And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.’ 25“But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony. 26‘And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.’ 27“And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, that you send him to my father’s house— 28for I have five brothers—in order that he may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ 29“But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ 30“But he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!’ 31“But he said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”

Consider verse 31, YHWH has indeed raised Yeshua from the dead and documented it well. Yet many refuse to believe even with someone raised from the dead.

Reflect on your life and the lives of those you know and love now, while you have time. If there are some you want to reach, if you need to repent and seek forgiveness… do so without delay. None of our tomorrow’s are promised to us, no matter how young and healthy we may be. Eternity is at stake.

Heaven and Hell

Death Ultimately Awaits All Of Us

There is an old joke about life and death that goes something like this, “the thing about life is that nobody gets out of it alive”. Whether you live to 100 or die much younger, death ultimately awaits all of us. But for believers we can take great comfort that when we die here on this earth, we will open our eyes in the presence of the Lord. That is not true of everyone who dies. In fact, most who die will end up in hell, separated from God in eternity by their own choice to be separated from Him in this earthly life. We should take great care not to “hide” from thinking about death, but rather to make sure we are prepared. How much time might we typically spend thinking about retirement, which lasts at best a handful of decades… how much more should we consider eternity! So, too, we do well to learn how to deal with the death of those we love or care about that may perish before we do.

Let’s take a bit of a look at the death of Miriam, Moses’ sister, in Numbers 20 and see if there is something to consider for ourselves in it regarding dealing with death. Though she was prominent in amongst her people, not much is said about her death. It is just one verse, probably easily read over without much thought as we typically read quickly through the biblical text.

Numbers 20:1

Death of Miriam

     1Then the sons of Israel, the whole congregation, came to the wilderness of Zin in the first month; and the people stayed at Kadesh. Now Miriam died there and was buried there.

As little as is said, I find it interesting to note that the fact that she was buried there was important enough to mention. It would appear that was significant to the people and to God for it to be included. I do observe that, like with the death of Jesus, burial as a means of laying the body to rest is highlighted. This is still a consistent cultural norm amongst people today relative to other practices of cremation and such. I think this does seem consistent with reinforcing the idea that there will be a resurrection for believers, but would have to study this in more detail to pull that thread more. In the meanwhile, I do find myself more encouraged to stick with burial and not get distracted with “options” which came about through other false belief systems or following of false gods.

What I do see as relevant as well is that The people do not carry her remains about with them, despite her being a prominent figure. What is left is just her dead body, not her soul. They were moving on. The inherently recognize they do not need to carry her remains to “keep her close” or “visit her gravesite”. Her body no longer contains her soul. It just needs a place to be “put to rest” so to speak. There is no need to keep visiting the empty shell and decaying physical form of someone after they die and are buried. They are not there. If a believer, they are now with Christ. If they rejected Christ or did not fully accept Him as savior and Lord, then they are now eternally separated from Him in hell… as a result of their own choice in life to be separate from Him. Keep your eyes focused on Christ and not the physical remains.

Immoral Behavior Is Offensive To God and It Is Wrong For Everyone

Jehovah could not make it much more clear… He wants us to follow His statutes and not those of the pagans who reject Him. We are not to blend in in this world. He takes sin very seriously. There is absolute right and wrong and many in this world are doing wrong. He does not promise us His blessing regardless of our behavior. He does lay out clear consequences and accountability for those who choose to sin, to live outside of His statutes and guidance. Jehovah has not changed His mind on what He approves of since Leviticus. He is unchanging in His character.

Leviticus 20

On Human Sacrifice and Immoralities

     1Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2“You shall also say to the sons of Israel:
‘Any man from the sons of Israel or from the aliens sojourning in Israel who gives any of his offspring to Molech, shall surely be put to death; the people of the land shall stone him with stones. 3‘I will also set My face against that man and will cut him off from among his people, because he has given some of his offspring to Molech, so as to defile My sanctuary and to profane My holy name. 4‘If the people of the land, however, should ever disregard that man when he gives any of his offspring to Molech, so as not to put him to death, 5then I Myself will set My face against that man and against his family, and I will cut off from among their people both him and all those who play the harlot after him, by playing the harlot after Molech.

      6‘As for the person who turns to mediums and to spiritists, to play the harlot after them, I will also set My face against that person and will cut him off from among his people. 7‘You shall consecrate yourselves therefore and be holy, for I am the LORD your God. 8‘You shall keep My statutes and practice them; I am the LORD who sanctifies you.

      9‘If there is anyone who curses his father or his mother, he shall surely be put to death; he has cursed his father or his mother, his bloodguiltiness is upon him.

      10‘If there is a man who commits adultery with another man’s wife, one who commits adultery with his friend’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. 11‘If there is a man who lies with his father’s wife, he has uncovered his father’s nakedness; both of them shall surely be put to death, their bloodguiltiness is upon them. 12‘If there is a man who lies with his daughter-in-law, both of them shall surely be put to death; they have committed incest, their bloodguiltiness is upon them. 13‘If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them. 14‘If there is a man who marries a woman and her mother, it is immorality; both he and they shall be burned with fire, so that there will be no immorality in your midst. 15‘If there is a man who lies with an animal, he shall surely be put to death; you shall also kill the animal. 16‘If there is a woman who approaches any animal to mate with it, you shall kill the woman and the animal; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them.

      17‘If there is a man who takes his sister, his father’s daughter or his mother’s daughter, so that he sees her nakedness and she sees his nakedness, it is a disgrace; and they shall be cut off in the sight of the sons of their people. He has uncovered his sister’s nakedness; he bears his guilt. 18‘If there is a man who lies with a menstruous woman and uncovers her nakedness, he has laid bare her flow, and she has exposed the flow of her blood; thus both of them shall be cut off from among their people. 19‘You shall also not uncover the nakedness of your mother’s sister or of your father’s sister, for such a one has made naked his blood relative; they will bear their guilt. 20‘If there is a man who lies with his uncle’s wife he has uncovered his uncle’s nakedness; they will bear their sin. They will die childless. 21‘If there is a man who takes his brother’s wife, it is abhorrent; he has uncovered his brother’s nakedness. They will be childless.

      22‘You are therefore to keep all My statutes and all My ordinances and do them, so that the land to which I am bringing you to live will not spew you out. 23‘Moreover, you shall not follow the customs of the nation which I will drive out before you, for they did all these things, and therefore I have abhorred them. 24‘Hence I have said to you, “You are to possess their land, and I Myself will give it to you to possess it, a land flowing with milk and honey.” I am the LORD your God, who has separated you from the peoples. 25‘You are therefore to make a distinction between the clean animal and the unclean, and between the unclean bird and the clean; and you shall not make yourselves detestable by animal or by bird or by anything that creeps on the ground, which I have separated for you as unclean. 26‘Thus you are to be holy to Me, for I the LORD am holy; and I have set you apart from the peoples to be Mine.

      27‘Now a man or a woman who is a medium or a spiritist shall surely be put to death. They shall be stoned with stones, their bloodguiltiness is upon them.’”

There is quite a list of immorality and rebellion identified in this scripture. Our Father is trying to be very clear about these sins. They are unacceptable. No excuses. No rationalizing. He has not changed His mind about these things being wrong. Take care in reflecting on these. Just because it is no longer common that someone may be sacrificing their child to Molech does not mean this is an obsolete passage. People today sacrifice their unborn children through abortion essentially to the god of self. For their own selfish desires they kill their unborn children rather than care for the children and raise them, taking accountability for past mistakes and showing respect for life. Globally there are over 40 million abortions a year. By the numbers, it is a much greater horror than any singular event in history, even the Hollocaust which was gruesome and killed 6 million. God is not pleased with sacrificing children through abortion any more than He was in killing them before Molech.

I do not believe that we are still commanded to execute those specific punishments, in light of Christ’s death and resurrection for our sins. But we are called to rebuke wrong behavior and call evil what it is and good what it is. We should not call what is evil good and what is good evil, as so many do today in our society. We should have laws against most of these behaviors, though some should need no laws, because our laws should reflect our Christian values. There should be punishments for these crimes to help discourage others from embracing sin and harming themselves and others.  Some should be laws, some should be active engagement from the Christian society to rebuke offenders (in love) so that they should repent. We should not cheerfully embrace offenders of these laws as if what they do is acceptable before God.

We can also bring forth the good news of forgiveness that is offered through Christ to those in sin. Jesus Christ died for our sins. We need to admit we are sinners who can not save themselves and accept His offer of forgiveness through grace by faith. Turn from our sinful behavior. Ask forgiveness from the Father. Turn toward the Father’s ways and ask for His help through the Spirit.

Take time to read the list thoroughly. Some of the sin covered here are rejected widely by society for now, but others have already been deemed acceptable and “good” by the world. Given a chance, the world will continue to redefine all of these sinful behaviors to caste them as “good” and caste those who rightly denounce them as “intolerant” and “cruel”.  We must repent personally, pray for God’s help for our nation and local government and the people, and stand against what is evil boldly by confronting it in our communities, churches, and influencing our legal system by actively engaging as a voters or in public office as followers of Christ.  We should never separate church and state. That is just an excuse to open the door for evil to prosper and it was never the intent of our founding fathers of the USA and is certainly not Jehovah’s desire. The founding fathers embraced Christian values and principles and teaching and integrated it into all aspects of the government they created (but that is a topic for another day).

Imitate God Rather Than The World

Ephesians 5 speaks for itself. It is a timeless warning to avoid worldliness and a call to righteousness.

Ephesians 5

Be Imitators of God

     1Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; 2and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.

      3But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints; 4and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. 5For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

      6Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7Therefore do not be partakers with them; 8for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light 9(for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), 10trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. 11Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; 12for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. 13But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light.

14For this reason it says,
“Awake, sleeper,
And arise from the dead,
And Christ will shine on you.”

      15Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, 16making the most of your time, because the days are evil. 17So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, 19speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; 20always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; 21and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.

Let us take a challenging look at ourselves and our lives and test to see if we are living as imitators of God, or of the world. In most cases, we struggle at some level in that we still are reflections of the sin culture of the world. Let us call upon God to help purify us further and help us to change our attitudes and actions to reflect better and better the righteousness of God rather than the values of the world.

We Must Judge What is Good and What is Evil

All too often people misuse the scripture as almost a common cliché… “do not judge”. They speak as if we are to take everything at face value without using the reason and logic that our Father has given us to judge and discern what is true and good from what is evil and wrong.

We must judge what is good and what is evil. We must use the standard Jehovah provides… which is written in the scriptures. If we fail to do so, there are dire consequences with eternal impact in heaven or hell.

2 Peter 2

The Rise of False Prophets

      1But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. 2Many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned; 3and in their greed they will exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

      4For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment; 5and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an example to those who would live ungodly lives thereafter; 7and if He rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men 8(for by what he saw and heard that righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds), 9then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment, 10and especially those who indulge the flesh in its corrupt desires and despise authority.

      Daring, self-willed, they do not tremble when they revile angelic majesties, 11whereas angels who are greater in might and power do not bring a reviling judgment against them before the Lord. 12But these, like unreasoning animals, born as creatures of instinct to be captured and killed, reviling where they have no knowledge, will in the destruction of those creatures also be destroyed, 13suffering wrong as the wages of doing wrong. They count it a pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are stains and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions, as they carouse with you, 14having eyes full of adultery that never cease from sin, enticing unstable souls, having a heart trained in greed, accursed children; 15forsaking the right way, they have gone astray, having followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; 16but he received a rebuke for his own transgression, for a mute donkey, speaking with a voice of a man, restrained the madness of the prophet.

      17These are springs without water and mists driven by a storm, for whom the black darkness has been reserved. 18For speaking out arrogant words of vanity they entice by fleshly desires, by sensuality, those who barely escape from the ones who live in error, 19promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by what a man is overcome, by this he is enslaved. 20For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment handed on to them. 22It has happened to them according to the true proverb, “A DOG RETURNS TO ITS OWN VOMIT,” and, “A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire.”

Don’t keep returning to your sin as a dog to its vomit or sow to wallowing in the mire. Judge carefully what is true and what is false using the Bible as your guide. It requires prayer, study and consistent dedication to grow in our knowledge and relationship with the Lord and His ways. Reject those who would teach false doctrine in order to accept and defend remaining in sin, contrary to God’s written word. Remember, they will not always be obvious to you at first. Some will appear righteous, as leaders of well attended churches. They will preach the gospel, but some of it will be true and some will be false. They will avoid preaching the full gospel, and even just be avoiding preaching on part of the gospel they will lead many astray. Further, to help one another, we should appropriately engage and rebuke other believers and followers of Christ to help them so they do not get led astray and out of right relationship with God by false teachers and prophets.

We do not show true compassion on one another by ignoring each others sin and confusion on what is right and what is not. Would it be compassionate to see someone taking a nap in the street and not rebuke them that it is wrong and dangerous? So, too, it is not compassionate to see our fellow believers departing from the right way and following false prophets and teachers into sin and not engage them in discussion and prayer together to help them remain on the right path. Of course, how we engage, discuss, and rebuke makes a big difference on our effectiveness… so take care in your approach. It is not our responsibility to force someone to change, but rather to engage them with the truth and let God do the rest. Ultimately, we each need to pick our own path… whether it leads to God, or away from Him.

All Knowing, Faith / Trusting God, Heaven and Hell, His Ways Are Not Our Ways, Jesus (hearing from God), Marriage, Teachable

They Neither Marry Or Are Given In Marriage

Make no mistake about it… this was an attempt at a trap question for Jesus. The Sadducees do not believe in resurrection, yet they ask in Mark 12 a question with the premise of resurrection. They were trying to make up a scenario which Jesus would not be able to answer and then use it to discredit the concept of resurrection and Jesus, Himself.

We must study and prepare to give answers to others as well. Jesus was always prepared during His earthly ministry. Whether the question was a trap or a genuine inquiry, Jesus seized the opportunity to teach.

There is additional meaning in this scripture as well, Jesus gives us another brief glimpse of what heaven is like and how it is different than what we are used to on Earth.

Mark 12:18-27

      18Some Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection) came to Jesus, and began questioning Him, saying, 19“Teacher, Moses wrote for us that IF A MAN’S BROTHER DIES and leaves behind a wife AND LEAVES NO CHILD, HIS BROTHER SHOULD MARRY THE WIFE AND RAISE UP CHILDREN TO HIS BROTHER. 20“There were seven brothers; and the first took a wife, and died leaving no children. 21“The second one married her, and died leaving behind no children; and the third likewise; 22and so all seven left no children. Last of all the woman died also. 23“In the resurrection, when they rise again, which one’s wife will she be? For all seven had married her.” 24Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are mistaken, that you do not understand the Scriptures or the power of God? 25“For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 26“But regarding the fact that the dead rise again, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the burning bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, and the God of Jacob’? 27“He is not the God of the dead, but of the living; you are greatly mistaken.”

I admit, this scripture is challenging for me. I love my wife. She is a core part of who I am in this life. I find it hard to get my mind around that in heaven, there is no marriage. When we rise from the dead and join the angels in heaven, there is no marriage. Whether or not I “like” that or feel “comfortable” with that… it appears to be so by reading what Jesus told us about heaven in this passage.

With all things, we must remember to accept God’s word as truth even for those parts we don’t fully understand and feel comfortable with. Gravity works and is true whether I like it or not. So, too, the truth about the universe and about life and life after death do not change because I may not be comfortable with them. The truth is what it is and it is not relative… it is absolute. There is one truth.

Instead of dwelling in confusion, I seek two paths… further Bible study and prayer to continue to increase my understanding of God’s word and also relying on God in faith. If I don’t understand or “agree” with His design… that makes me wrong rather than Him. I choose to trust Him. I ask Him to help me in my faith and He will.

I believe heaven will be wonderful, even if there are aspects I struggle to get my mind around while I am yet in this life.

Don’t Be A Slacker, Run the Race To Win

Do any of us respect those who do the bare minimum to get by? Or do we prefer those who dedicate themselves to do things well?

Which parents among us are proud if our kids do the bare minimum to get by? If we ask them to clean their room and they pick up one out of ten things in the middle of the floor… are we proud? are we even satisfied? What if they pick up half?

How about an employee that does the bare minimum to get by? The boss asks them to open the store at 9am… and he does… but he is always late, strolling in at 9:30. Is the boss impressed with the employee? Certainly not.

Consider parents. What would we say about parents who keep their children alive but let them be unsupervised and filthy? or let them play in the street where cars are driving by? Would we give them an award for parents of the year? or more likely try to help guide them to be better parents?

How about a spouse? Do we want a spouse who wants to please and show love to us? or are we satisfied with one that just lives alongside us, content to do their own thing without care or concern for us?

It is certainly fair to say that no one respects a slacker. Why then, do so many focus on doing the bare minimum they think is required to get to heaven? Certainly God is not impressed.

Challenge yourself… instead of asking “Do I need to do that to get into heaven?”, ask instead “Would it please God for me to do that?” What a powerful change in attitude. Seek not to do the minimum to “get into heaven”, but rather to draw near to God and please Him. The same approach is also powerful for all of the examples above as well! Children who don’t look for the minimum to get by, but instead seek to please their parents. Employees, parents, spouses seeking to please others… it works.

Don’t be a slacker for God or for your other important relationships in your life. Seek to joyfully and enthusiastically please Him… to obey Him in all things. Do not accept doing “just enough”.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27

 24Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. 25Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 26Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; 27but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.

Should We Fear Death?

Why is it we are willing to plan for retirement or a new car or a vacation but not for what happens when we die? We should all get past denial of death and accept that we will all die… we may not know when or how, but it will happen. Many avoid thinking about the topic of their own death because it makes them uncomfortable.  However, this is a bit like an ostrich putting its head in the sand to hide from trouble. They feel better, but it does little to protect them.

We do well to prepare ourselves and our families for death in its proper context. Of course this  includes financial planning and making a will and other logistical aspects of providing for those we may leave behind, but it is more than that. Should we not spend at least as much time thinking about where we will go after we die as we do thinking about where we may live when we retire? Eternity will last much longer than retirement, I assure you.

“Should I fear death?” It is a penetrating question that many struggle with. Others avoid it all together. The answer truly comes down to one of personal faith. For those of us who truly believe in Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord, we need not fear death. We can trust that God’s promises are true and we will go to be with Him when we die. We can also trust that He is in control and can protect us as His faithful servants if He chooses to do so.

Let us first consider Psalm 23. Read the whole scripture but focus in particular on verses 4 and 6. It reminds us that we need not fear even when we face death and that after goodness and lovingkindness of God follow me all the days of this life… I will go to dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

He leads me beside quiet waters.

      3He restores my soul;
He guides me in the paths of righteousness

I fear no evil, for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

      5You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You have anointed my head with oil;
My cup overflows.

      6Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life,
And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Consider also the faith of Shadrach, Meschach and Abed-nego. They were confronted with a demand to worship an idol or be thrown into a furnace to die. They believed that God would save them, but were prepared to die if God may choose not to save them. That is faith that does not fear death.

Daniel 3:16-18

      16Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego replied to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to give you an answer concerning this matter. 17“If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire; and He will deliver us out of your hand, O king. 18“But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we are not going to serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”

There are more examples you can study as well such as Paul and Daniel, but I will not try to include them all here in this article. For those that have rejected God or do now know Him, then death may truly be a frightening topic for there is no hope for them. Suffice it to say that the only way to truly prepare to face death is to come to know the Creator of the universe personally and accept His offer of salvation by grace, through faith in Jesus Christ.

Absent of the Body Is Home With The Lord

All who live face suffering and trials.  All who live at some point die. These are truths no one can credibly argue against. However there is so much more! For the righteous who submit to and follow Jehovah through Jesus Christ, there is much comfort for the sorrows and difficulties we face in this world. As disciples of Christ, we seek to please Jehovah and know that when we die we will leave our earthly bodies and go to be at home with our Father.  We understand that everyone will face judgment and be welcomed to heaven or condemned to hell based on their own choices made during their life to truly accept or reject Jesus Christ. We are ambassadors from Him to come and share the truth of the gospel with others who do not know Him. We are to bring the joy and hope we find in knowing our Father to others and try to lead them to the grace that is offered in forgiveness of sin.

2 Corinthians 5:1-10

      1For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2For indeed in this house we groan, longing to be clothed with our dwelling from heaven, 3inasmuch as we, having put it on, will not be found naked. 4For indeed while we are in this tent, we groan, being burdened, because we do not want to be unclothed but to be clothed, so that what is mortal will be swallowed up by life. 5Now He who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who gave to us the Spirit as a pledge.

      6Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord— 7for we walk by faith, not by sight— 8we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord. 9Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him. 10For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

We, as followers of Christ, have hope in our Father in heaven. We trust in His promises and in the salvation He offers. What greater joy than to be able to share such good news with others? Let us seek to please Him while in this earth!

If someone was giving out $100 bills for free, you would tell everyone you know so they too could be blessed. So if Jehovah offers us forgiveness of sin by grace… eternal life in heaven with Him… should we not also be excited and joyful to tell others?
