Worldliness vs. Godliness

Understanding from God is very different from understanding that is of the world. Let us judge carefully which we follow in our lives. Our actions will reveal our motivations.

James 3:14-16

13Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. 14But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. 15This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. 16For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. 17But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. 18And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Bitter jealousy and selfish ambition are of the world. Arrogance as well. It brings disorder and evil and never peace. Godly wisdom is pure, gentle, peaceable, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruit and without hypocrisy. It brings peace.

Which will you choose?

Walk in the Light Rather Than the Darkness

When we walk in light we see things as they really are. Light also represents truth and goodness, even God Himself, whereas darkness represents evil and sin.  Let us not fool ourselves by convincing ourselves we are free of sin on our own achievement. Only through Christ can we be deemed righteous as we are cleansed by His blood shed for us.  We can not walk in sin and darkness and yet claim fellowship with Him.

John 3:16

19“This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. 20“For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21“But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”

1 John 1:5-10

God Is Light

5This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. 6If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; 7but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.

Let us see clearly. We have a sin problem… yes all of us. We can not overcome it on our own. We can not live in close fellowship with the Father while living in disobedience and rebellion… in sin. We must turn from our sinful ways, ask forgiveness, and accept Jesus as Lord knowing that He died for our sins and rose again. If we claim that we are in fellowship with the Father, and yet our actions and attitudes reflect sin and disobedience from His word… the truth is not in us.

Jehovah Reaffirms Mans Dominion Over the Earth

First with Adam, and again with Noah, Jehovah affirms clearly the dominion of man over the earth where He has placed us. We can appreciate the bountiful gifts which our Creator has provided that allow us not only to live as necessity but to live in comfort. Equally important is the concept that life is meaningful. Even the life of animals has value. We are not to eat them while they yet have blood. This most likely is stated to avoid unnecessary cruelty to animals by ensuring that they are already dead before we process or prepare them to eat. Lest we get too comfortable with shedding the blood of animals, our Father puts here a stark reminder that although man has dominion over animals… people are clearly different. People are made in the image of God. Our lives are not to be taken lightly. We belong to the Father.

Genesis 9:1-7

1And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. 2“The fear of you and the terror of you will be on every beast of the earth and on every bird of the sky; with everything that creeps on the ground, and all the fish of the sea, into your hand they are given. 3“Every moving thing that is alive shall be food for you; I give all to you, as I gave the green plant. 4“Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. 5“Surely I will require your lifeblood; from every beast I will require it. And from every man, from every man’s brother I will require the life of man.

      6“Whoever sheds man’s blood,
By man his blood shall be shed,
For in the image of God
He made man.

7“As for you, be fruitful and multiply;
Populate the earth abundantly and multiply in it.”

There are many interesting further areas one could explore in this scripture, but I believe the main point is quite simply about man’s position of dominance over, not being coequal with, the animals and the earth. Many today have gone astray in pursuit of elevating animals and the earth God has provided to be more important than the people God clearly made in His own image to have dominion over it.

Let us be thankful to our Creator for His bountiful provision and respect the place He has put us in over creation.

Do Not Love the World

The physical world is all around us. It is what we see, hear, touch, smell, and taste. It shouts to get our attention. All that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father… but is from the world. All of these will pass away.

Followers of Christ are called to turn away from worldliness and turn toward the behaviors and attitudes of Christ… of the Father. Setting ourselves apart for the purposes of God is making ourselves holy.  Those who do the will of God live forever. It is about more than saying we believe in Him. If we truly believe in Him, then our behaviors and attitudes will show it.  It is a life of self control, discipline, and submission leading to joy and peace and eternal life.

1 John 2:15-24

Do Not Love the World

15Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.

18Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour. 19They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, so that it would be shown that they all are not of us. 20But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know. 21I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie is of the truth. 22Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. 23Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also. 24As for you, let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father.

The scripture is very clear on this subject… those that deny Christ are called antichrist. Denying Christ is serious rejection of the Father as well for they are one.  We can not fool the Father by saying we accept Christ and going to church, but not changing our lives to turn away from worldliness and turn toward holiness. We must actually submit our hearts and minds and lives to Him fully. Our life will change as a reflection of that submission. We will not make it perfectly, but He will help us. We walk with Him through this life and He helps us through the Holy Spirit, who dwells inside believers.

Ask the Father to reveal to you areas in your life in which you still “love the world” and have not submitted to Him. Ask Him for help to change and draw nearer to Him. Fight the urge to just assume you have it all worked out just perfectly and everything is comfortable for you “as is”. All of us do well to draw nearer to the Father and to continue addressing areas of sin and lack of submission in our lives.
